Intake Of High Producing Holstein Cows Grazing Pasture Or Fed A Total Mixed Ration, E S. Kolver, L D. Muller Jul 2024

Intake Of High Producing Holstein Cows Grazing Pasture Or Fed A Total Mixed Ration, E S. Kolver, L D. Muller

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

The ability of a pasture diet to support a high dry matter intake without supplementary feed was determined using 16 high producing Holstein cows. Cows (n=8) were adapted to an all-pasture diet by incrementally reducing the amount of total mixed ration (TMR) fed over four weeks. A control group of cows (n=8) remained in confinement and were fed a TMR. Performance of grazing cows differed significantly (P < 0.001) from TMR fed cows by intake (19.0 vs. 23.4 kg DM/d), milk production (29.6 vs. 44.1 kg/d), milk protein content (2.61 vs. 2.80%), liveweight (562.1 vs. 597.3 kg), and condition score (2.02 vs. 2.50). Results indicate that intake of good quality pasture is higher than previously estimated for high producing Holstein cows in the USA, but that milk production is 15 kg/d less than when cows are fed a TMR.

Managing A Multi-Forage Rotational Stocking Unit Without Farming Equipment And With The Addition Of Economical Fringe Benefits, R L. Dalrymple, B C. Flatt, F W. Dobbs, J A. Barrick

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

A specialized introduced forage rotational stocking grazing unit was managed without usual grassland farming equipment and with various alternative management and production techniques as fringe benefits. The forage production techniques have been successful for many years. Livestock production and economic perimeters have been average to above average. The greatest sold beef yield has been 713 pounds of beef per acre. That is excellent considering the low-capital overhead management style of the unit.

Extensive Management Of Grasslands In Central France: Effects On Animal Performances And Economical Efficiency, J M. Chabosseau

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

The farming context for livestock production has changed in Central France for the last 15 years. There has been a release of land and a change in financial support that favoured extensive systems. The management and economical results of two experimental sheep farmlets are compared; the extensified has an area 45% larger than the control but the number of ewes are the same. The optimization of managements in both units leads to practices rather different for fertilising, fodder making and grazing. The effects are the achieving of similar animal performances and the reduction of expenditure on grasslands (-30% per ewe) …

Native Pasture Forage On Offer And Animal Response, G E. Maraschin, E L. Moojen, C.M D. Escosteguy, F L. Correa, E S. Apezteguia, L L. Boldrini, J Riboldi

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

The 5-yr. study on the native pasture of southern Brazil (30o S) under levels of dry matter on offer (DMO) and continuous stocking, with five tester steers plus the put-and-takers per pasture and two field replications, indicated dry matter residues as dependent on DMO. Dry matter (DM) yield increased with DM residues, as well as dead plant parts. Daily liveweight gains (DLG) and gain ha- 1 showed a curvilinear response to DMO and DM residues. Forage on offer levels promoting selective grazing enhance higher DLG and sustainable G. ha-1, and contributes to the well-being of the ecosystem.

The Effect Of Stocking Rate On Herbage Utilization And Milk Production Under Time-Restricted Grazing By Lactating Dairy Cows, M Okubo, I Nonaka, K Furukawa, H Nakatsuji, S Kondo

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

The effect of two stocking rates of 5 (L) and 7 (H) heads of lactating dairy cows per hectare on herbage utilization and milk production were determined under a time-restricted grazing during 2 years from 1993 to 1994. The annual herbage utilization and milk production from pasture in 1993 were lower in H than L (herbage, 7.9 vs. 9.1tDM/ ha; milk, 8.1 vs. 9.6t/ha) since the days of grazing cycle was considerably shorter in H than L (7.8 vs. 17.1days). As a result of changing the expected daily herbage intake per head of H seasonally in 1994, the annual herbage …

Technology Development Of Pasture Seed Production For Small Scale Farmers In Uganda, P Lusembo, E N. Sabiiti, C Ebong

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Pasture seed production by smallholder farmers in Uganda is hardly developed. The stages of development since the early 1960s are described as initial forage evaluation for adaptability and productivity of various species, seed production trials in relation to plant population, fertilizer requirements and the use of support systems for climbing forage legumes. Annual seed production by smallholder farmers, under an informal seed production system, is reported to have risen from 1,200kg in 1989 to over 35 metric tonnes of forage legume seed in 1995. This was attributed to the availability of appropriate seed production technology and the presence of a …

Forage Seed Production In Egypt For Domestic Marker And For Export, M A. El-Nahrawy, A Rammah, O Niemelainen

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

In Egypt, no major effort is made to provide local and export markets with seeds of correctly identified and pure cultivars of forage crops in spite of the existence of all the essential factors for a successful seed industry. A wide genetic base of indigenous forage crops such as berseem clover and alfalfa, proper irrigation, a harvest and seed maturation period free from rain, sunshine and clear sky all year and highly fertile soils in isolated areas are available. Moreover, uncertified, uncontrolled and unidentified local seeds of berseem clover and alfalfa are highly demanded by foreign markets due to their …

Community-Level Factors And Their Associations With Changing Opioid Overdose Fatality Rates In Kentucky, 2019–2021, Shawn R. Nigam, Philip M. Westgate, Svetla Slavova, Rachel Vickers-Smith, Katherine L. Thompson Jul 2024

Community-Level Factors And Their Associations With Changing Opioid Overdose Fatality Rates In Kentucky, 2019–2021, Shawn R. Nigam, Philip M. Westgate, Svetla Slavova, Rachel Vickers-Smith, Katherine L. Thompson

Journal of Appalachian Health

Introduction: Kentucky has one of the highest opioid overdose fatality rates in the United States, which has increased significantly from 2019 to 2020. The COVID-19 pandemic has caused lasting effects on mental health and health care, which have been linked with increased opioid overdose. These effects are exacerbated in Appalachian regions, where there is a lack of sufficient access to community pharmacies and adequate health care.

Purpose: In this study, we characterize changes in opioid overdose fatality rates in Kentucky from 2019 to 2021, with a specific focus on changes in Appalachian vs non-Appalachian counties. We aim to identify associations …

UK CARES Faculty Publications

The migratory and matrix-invading capacities of the cumulus–oocyte complex have been shown to be important for the ovulatory process. In metastatic cancers, these capacities are due to increased expression of proteases, however, there is limited information on protease expression in the cumulus–oocyte complexes. The present study examined cumulus–oocyte complex expression of plasmins, matrix metalloproteases, and A Disintegrin and Metalloproteinase with Thrombospondin Motifs family members in the rat and human. In the rat, human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) administration increased cumulus–oocyte complex expression of Mmp2, Mmp9, Mmp13, Mmp14, Mmp16, Adamts1, and the protease inhibitors Timp1, Timp3, and Serpine1 by 8–12 h. Mapping Recent Timber Harvest Activity In A Temperate Forest Using Single Date Airborne Lidar Surveys And Machine Learning: Lessons For Conservation Planning, G. Bursh Fisher, Andrew J. Elmore, Matthew C. Fitzpatrick, Darin J. Mcneil, Jeff W. Atkins, Jeffery L. Larkin

Earth and Environmental Sciences Faculty Publications

Effective planning for natural resource management and wildlife conservation requires detailed information on vegetation structure at landscape scales and how structure is influenced by land- use practices. In many forested landscapes, the largest impacts of land use on forest structure are driven by forest management activities, which can include invasive species control, prescribed fire, partial harvests (e.g. shelterwood harvests) or overstory removals and clearcuts. Active timber management is often used to achieve forest conservation objectives, but to be used effectively, managers require knowledge of harvest frequency and extent in adjacent forests and at landscape scales. In this paper, we develop …

A Comprehensive Study Of Library-Led Textbook Affordability Initiatives In The United States, Mitchell Scott, Rachel E. Scott

Library Faculty and Staff Publications

This study presents findings from a survey and interviews investigating library-led textbook affordability initiatives in the United States. The results document diverse considerations and divergences in workflows, challenges librarians face in establishing and maintaining textbook affordability programs, and the intersection of these initiatives with library and institutional strategies. Findings suggest that these programs have grown in number and scale over the past few years, accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns, and are sustained—even without permanent, designated funding—due to consistently positive perceptions about their impact on student success, just-in-time delivery, and alignment with library and institutional goals.

Developing A Cross-Asset Allocation Mechanism, Jon Wilcoxson, Bryan Gibson, Bethany Paris Jul 2024

Developing A Cross-Asset Allocation Mechanism, Jon Wilcoxson, Bryan Gibson, Bethany Paris

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) has developed several tools and methods to compare the value of proposed projects within specific programs and asset classes, including the Enhanced Bridge Prioritization Index, Enhanced Pavement Prioritization Index, and the Strategic Highway Investment Formula for Tomorrow (SHIFT). Although immensely valuable, these methods and tools do not offer a convenient way of comparing the contributions of individual projects to meeting overall KYTC performance goals. As such, the Cabinet needs a robust mechanism for comparing the impact of projects across its capital, safety, and asset management programs. Following a review of cross-asset allocation frameworks described in …

Type-2 Diabetes, Pancreatic Amylin, And Neuronal Metabolic Remodeling In Alzheimer's Disease, Noah Leibold, James R. Bain, Florin Despa

Neurology Faculty Publications

Type-2 diabetes raises the risk for Alzheimer’s disease (AD)-type dementia and the conversion from mild cognitive impairment to dementia, yet mechanisms connecting type-2 diabetes to AD remain largely unknown. Amylin, a pancreatic 𝜷-cell hormone co-secreted with insulin, participates in the central regulation of satiation, but also forms pancreatic amyloid in persons with type-2 diabetes and synergistically interacts with brain amyloid 𝜷 (A𝜷) pathology, in both sporadic and familial Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Growing evidence from studies of tumor growth, together with early observations in skeletal muscle, indicates amylin as a potential trigger of cellular metabolic reprogramming. Because the blood, cerebrospinal fluid, …

Behavioral Science Faculty Publications

African Americans experience higher incidence and prevalence of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Yet, they continue to be underrepresented in AD research, limiting the ability to generalize findings to the increasingly diverse US population. To reduce AD disparities, targeted efforts are needed to increase the representation of African Americans in AD research. This mini review identified evidence-based strategies that increased research participation among older African Americans. Four recruitment strategies emerged from eight published peer-reviewed studies that directly evaluated the effectiveness of strategies aimed at increasing the number of African American participants in Alzheimer's research. The strategies include community outreach and education, face-to-face …

Markey Cancer Center Faculty Publications

The development of cancer involves the accumulation of somatic mutations in several essential biological pathways. Delineating the temporal order of pathway mutations during tumori- genesis is crucial for comprehending the biological mechanisms underlying cancer development and identifying potential targets for therapeutic intervention. Several computational and statistical methods have been introduced for estimating the order of somatic mutations based on mutation profile data from a cohort of patients. However, one major issue of current methods is that they do not take into account intra-tumor heterogeneity (ITH), which limits their ability to accurately discern the order of pathway mutations. To address this …

The Potential Impact Of Endangered Species Legislation On Federal Grazing Lands And The Livestock Industry, G M. Luciuk, B Bristol, T W. Weins, D M. Boyle

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Crown based grazing is an integral part of the management structure of cattle operations, and is very important to the economic fabric of rural communities. Federal crown lands, such as the PFRA operated community pastures are an integral part of the resource conservation efforts in western Canada. These lands represent a significant reservoir of the remaining natural lands which are important for wildlife habitat. Sustainable management of such contiguous blocks of land is essential for the maintenance of biodiversity. Proposed endangered species legislation would require the development of recovery plans on federal lands for endangered, threatened and extirpated species. Rural …
