Woody Plants Under Stress, Deborah B. Hill, William M. Fountain Jul 1988

Woody Plants Under Stress, Deborah B. Hill, William M. Fountain

Agriculture and Natural Resources Publications

When people see their woody plants (shrubs and trees) decline, they often want a "magical" treatment to make them lush, green and healthy again. But no magic exists. This publication should help you understand some common causes of woody plant stress, how stress leads to decline and what measures, if any, can make the tree healthy again. Remember, however, that all trees and shrubs like every living organism, will eventually die.

A Controlled Evaluation Of Devotional Meditation And Progressive Muscle Relaxation, Charles R. Carlson, Panayiota E. Bacaseta, Dexter A. Simanton

CRVAW Faculty Journal Articles

The present study was conducted to determine the effects of devotional meditation (DM), defined as a period of prayer and quiet reading and pondering of biblical material, on physiological and psychological variables related to stress. It was hypothesized that religious persons engaging in DM experience physiological and psychological changes similar to those reported for persons using progressive relaxation (PR) exercises. Thirty-six participants, equally divided by sex into 3 groups: DM, PR, and a Wait List Control, underwent extensive psychophysiological assessment prior to and following a systematic introductio to either DM or PR. The hypothesis that DM could generate positive physiological …

How Safe Is Your Drinking Water?, Larry R. Piercy, Joseph L. Taraba

Agricultural Engineering Extension Updates

Water is a basic ingredient of life and a safe water supply is essential for our good health. Adequate supplies of clean drinking water, whether it comes from a well or from a municipal treatment plant should be everyone's concern. The recent drought conditions have forced many people to realize how critical adequate and safe water supplies really are to the well-being of their families and communities.

Acceptable Paints, Coatings, Sealants And Liners For Potable Water Systems, Joseph L. Taraba

Agricultural Engineering Extension Updates

The maintenance of safe drinking water from an individual domestic water supply requires the use of materials that do not regrade the water by adding contaminants that increase health risk to humans. Paints, coatings, sealants or liners are used in the construction and maintenance of wells, ponds and cistern water supply systems. The accompanying list is provided as an aid to the homeowner in choosing material(s) that will not contaminate the water.

Earthquake Hazard Mitigation Of Transportation Facilities, David L. Allen, Vincent P. Drnevich, Mostafa Sayyedsadr, L. John Fleckenstein

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Concern has grown in recent years, over the seismic activity of the New Madrid seismic zone located in the central United States. Western Kentucky is located in this region. To permit emergency medical, supply, and equipment traffic into this area after an earthquake has occurred, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is interested in the possibility of keeping selected routes passable. This report lists the routes that have been investigated and recommended as being routes that should be maintained in passable conditions. These recommended routes have been visually surveyed and all seismically significant features cataloged. These features are listed in the Appendix. …

Properties Of Anti-Lyb-2-Mediated B-Cell Activation And The Relationship Between Lyb-2 Molecules And Receptors For B-Cell Stimulatory Factor-1 On Murine B Lymphocytes, Subbarao Bondada, Joan Morris, A. R. Baluyut Jan 1988

R. Baluyut

Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics Faculty Publications

The murine B-cell differentiation antigen Lyb-2 has been shown to be involved in B-lymphocyte activation and has been postulated by some to be related to a receptor for B-cell stimulatory factor I (BSF-1) (H. Yakura et al., J. Immunol. 137, 1475, 1986). Here we have demonstrated that monoclonal antibody (mAB) to Lyb-2 resembles BSF-1 in its ability to activate small resting B cells and enhancement of surface Ia. Anti-Lyb-2 antibodies bound B cells with very high avidity and were able to induce mobilization of cytosolic-free calcium. Anti-Lyb-2 mAB differs from BSF-1 in that BSF-1 but not anti-Lyb-2 is able to …

Impaired Autoreactive T Cell-Induced T Cell-T Cell Interaction In Aged Mice, Venkatachalam Udhayakumar, Subbarao Bondada, Aruna Seth, Mitzi Nagarkatti, Prakash S. Nagarkatti Jan 1988

Impaired Autoreactive T Cell-Induced T Cell-T Cell Interaction In Aged Mice, Venkatachalam Udhayakumar, Subbarao Bondada, Aruna Seth, Mitzi Nagarkatti, Prakash S. Nagarkatti

Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics Faculty Publications

Self-Ia-reactive (autoreactive) L3T4+ T cell clones have been shown earlier to stimulate the proliferation of syngeneic naive L3T4+ T cells and initiate a T cell-T cell (T-T) interaction leading to the generation of immunoregulatory circuits. Since aging has been shown to be associated with a decline of the immune responsiveness, age-related alterations in the T-T interaction was investigated in the present study. Using several I-Ed-specific autoreactive T cell clones isolated from 2- to 3-month-old (young) DBA/2 mice as stimulators, it was observed that L3T4+ T cells from 22- to 24-month-old (aged) DBA/2 mice, failed to …

Cigarette Company Liability: Preemption, Public Policy And Alternative Compensation Systems, Richard C. Ausness Jan 1988

Cigarette Company Liability: Preemption, Public Policy And Alternative Compensation Systems, Richard C. Ausness

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

This Article speculates that some courts may have used the preemption doctrine to mask their misgivings about the ability of tort litigation to provide fair compensation to injured consumers without bankrupting the tobacco industry. Consequently, the author suggests that it may be necessary to streamline the litigation process for mass torts or perhaps even to replace it with an alternative compensation system for the purpose of adjudicating smoking-related claims.

With this in mind, Part I briefly examines the health risks of smoking and the nature of the common law duty to warn. It also reviews a number of recent cigarette …
