Earthquake Hazard Mitigation Of Transportation Facilities For Ohio County, L. John Fleckenstein, David L. Allen, Vincent P. Drnevich

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Concern has grown in recent years over the seismic activity of the New Madrid seismic zone in Western Kentucky. Ohio County, Kentucky is located in this region. To permit emergency medical, supply, and equipment traffic into this area after an earthquake has occurred, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is interested in the possibility of keeping selected routes passable. This report lists the route that has been investigated and recommended as being the route in Ohio County that should be maintained in passable condition. The recommended routes, KY 136 and US 231, have been visually surveyed and all seismically significant features cataloged. …

Putting A Top Quality Forage Program Together On Your Farm, Richard Brown Phillips

Kentucky Alfalfa and Stored Forage Conference

You know most of us here, and I am including myself, really don't have a super talent for predicting the future with a great deal of consistency, however, our interest doesn't have to be in predicting, but rather, just primarily in considering potentials and opportunities in the future. What do you say, let's take a little time to look at some of the opportunities in the forage industry. The nation's No. 1 cash crop.

Lead In Your Drinking Water, Joseph L. Taraba

Agricultural Engineering Extension Updates

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) recently imposed a regulation requiring public water suppliers to notify all their customers of the potential health effects of lead from household plumbing. The USEPA regulates public water supplies (with at least 15 service connections or servicing 25 individuals) but does not regulate private water supplies. The potential health hazard of lead is also present from household plumbing which is supplied water from a private water source.

Bottled Water, Joseph L. Taraba Jan 1989

Bottled Water, Joseph L. Taraba

Agricultural Engineering Extension Updates

Bottled water is an option for families who have a water problem, whether their water is unsafe or has an "off" taste or odor. It is best used as a temporary measure or in small quantities for drinking water. At a cost of 65 cents to $1.15 per gallon (Lexington, KY; July 1988) bottled water could become an expensive item for a large family using it for drinking and cooking.

Handling Leftover Spray Mixtures And Rinsates, James Martin, Monroe Rasnake, Doug Johnson

Soil Science News and Views

Pesticide applicators are faced with the issue of what to do with leftover spray mixtures and rinsewater from cleaning sprayers or other equipment involved with the mixing and application of pesticides. There is increasing concern that releasing these diluted pesticides around such places as the workshop and loading or mixing areas could be a potential risk to human health and the environment.

Control Of Nitrate Leaching With Winter Annual Cover Crops, Daniel Mccracken Jan 1989

Control Of Nitrate Leaching With Winter Annual Cover Crops, Daniel Mccracken

Soil Science News and Views

Public attention and Federal legislation have focused recently on the contamination of groundwater by nitrate. Seeking to establish standards for safe drinking water, the Federal Government has set the maximum concentration for nitrate (as nitrogen) at 10 parts per million. In large areas of the Great Plains, this value is now commonly exceeded in well water. The limited data from Kentucky appear to indicate that excessive nitrate concentrations are not as widespread in Kentucky water supplies as they are in the water of states more heavily involved in grain production and more dependent on shallow wells for supply. One of …

Isolation And Immunological Characterization Of A Group Of New B Lymphomas From Cba Mice, Venkatachalam Udhayakumar, Peter H. Brodeur, M. S. Rajagopalan, Stephen Zimmer, Karen E. Pollok, Subbarao Bondada

Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics Faculty Publications

We have isolated and characterized a new series of B lymphomas which occurred spontaneously in a group of CBA N mice that were transferred with spleen or lymph node cells from 24-month-old CBA Ca mice. Tumor cell lines from six CBA N mice that received spleen cells were rescued and designated as BKS-2, BKS-3, BKS-4, BKS-5, BKS-6, and BKS-7. Also, tumor cells from a recipient of lymph node cells were rescued and the resulting cell line was designated BKL. These tumor cells expressed membrane immunoglobulin (μ,κ), major histocompatibility complex Class I and Class II molecules, B220, Lyb8, Fc receptors, J11d, …

A Specific Defect In The Proliferative Capacity Of B Cells From Old Mice Stimulated With Autoreactive T Cells, Prakash S. Nagarkatti, Aruna Seth, Mitzi Nagarkatti, Natarajan Muthusamy, Barbara Rychlik, Subbarao Bondada Jan 1989

A Specific Defect In The Proliferative Capacity Of B Cells From Old Mice Stimulated With Autoreactive T Cells, Prakash S. Nagarkatti, Aruna Seth, Mitzi Nagarkatti, Natarajan Muthusamy, Barbara Rychlik, Subbarao Bondada

Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics Faculty Publications

B lymphocytes from aged mice were found to be defective in their ability to proliferate in response to stimulation with an autoreactive T cell clone D1.4. The differentiative response leading to antibody secretion was also impaired in the auto D1.4 T cell-stimulated B cells from old mice in comparison to similarly stimulated B cells from young mice. The B cells from old mice were competent in activating the autoreactive T cells such that the T cells were induced to proliferate. The B cell defect appears to be restricted to a certain phase of B cell activation, since old mouse B …

Activated Carbon Filters, Joseph L. Taraba, Linda Heaton, Tom Ilvento Jan 1989

Activated Carbon Filters, Joseph L. Taraba, Linda Heaton, Tom Ilvento

Agricultural Engineering Extension Updates

Many people feel the water supplied by public water systems to their home faucets is not safe. Most people judge the quality of their water by taste, odor and appearance. But the risk to one's health cannot be judged by these factors. Many of the chemicals or biological organisms that affect one's health are tasteless, odorless and cannot be seen. In searching for a means to improve the safety to their drinking water they encounter water filters, water purifiers, activated carbon (AC) filters that are common names for home drinking water treatment devices. In reading the labels, boxes and instructions …

The Relationship Of Federal Income Taxes To Toxic Wastes: A Selective Study, Richard A. Westin Jan 1989

The Relationship Of Federal Income Taxes To Toxic Wastes: A Selective Study, Richard A. Westin

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

More demanding federal regulation, universal local opposition to waste treatment and disposal facilities, and increased long-term liabilities for waste sites have substantially restricted the supply of licensed waste handlers and have sharply increased the costs of waste disposal. As a result of increased costs and downstream liabilities for cleanup, industrial generators have begun to examine more closely their waste management practices and opportunities they may have to reduce the amount of hazardous waste they generate.

The urgent need to marshal the full range of industrial strategies to achieve significant reduction in the amount and toxicity of hazardous waste and the …

Teratogenic Effects Of Zinc On Embryo-Larval Stages Of The Fathead Minnow (Pimephales Promelas), Barbara A. Ramey Oct 1988

Teratogenic Effects Of Zinc On Embryo-Larval Stages Of The Fathead Minnow (Pimephales Promelas), Barbara A. Ramey

KWRRI Research Reports

The effects of zinc on embryos and larvae of the fathead minnow (Pimephales promelas) were studied using standard 8-day embryo-larval bioassay techniques. The objective was to determine if there was a period in embryonic development which would be the most sensitive to the toxic and teratogenic effects of zinc. Five developmental stages were exposed to 0.5, 1.0 and 3.0 mg/L. After 96 hr, all animals exposed to 3.0 mg Zn/L were dead. The hatching stage was the most affected by 1.0 mg/L, with only 59% surviving after 96 hr, while the tailbud stage showed essentially control-level survival. However, virtually all …

Highway Safety Research, Development, And Technology Transfer, John A. Deacon Aug 1988

Highway Safety Research, Development, And Technology Transfer, John A. Deacon

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Late in 1987, the Federal Highway Administration assembled a seven-member panel which, guided by a primary contractor, Harrison Boyd & Associates, was charged with the task of developing a recommended five-year research, development, and technology transfer program for highway safety starting in the 1990s. As a part of the task, each panel member prepared an individual position paper to stimulate and focus panel discussions and, ultimately, to provide the basis for a consensus paper. This represents one such individual paper.

Although it is believed that significant safety gains can be achieved in the 1990s and beyond simply by more extensive …

The Effect Of Preozonation On The Anaerobic Biodegradability Of Resistant Phenolic Compounds, Yi-Tin Wang, Pin-Chieh Pai, James L. Latchew Aug 1988

The Effect Of Preozonation On The Anaerobic Biodegradability Of Resistant Phenolic Compounds, Yi-Tin Wang, Pin-Chieh Pai, James L. Latchew

KWRRI Research Reports

Ozone pretreatment studies of four model phenolic compounds were conducted to evaluate the effects of ozonation on the anaerobic biodegradability and toxicity of these compounds. Two types of batch studies, the Biochemical Methane Potential (BMP) and the Anaerobic Toxicity Assay (ATA), were performed on samples ozonated upon phenol, o-cresol, 2,5-dichlorophenol, and 2,4-dinitrophenol.

Experimental results showed that toxic and refractory phenolic compounds were converted to methane gas by means of preozonation. In general, the biodegradable fraction of the oxidation products increased as the ozone dose was increased. However, ozonation to achieve at least 60% COD reduction was necessary to faciliate methane …
