Plasma Native And Peptidase-Derivable Met-Enkephalin Responses To Restraint Stress In Rats. Adaptation To Repeated Restraint, K. Pierzchala, G. R. Van Loon

Internal Medicine Faculty Publications

Met-enkephalin and related proenkephalin A-derived peptides circulate in plasma at picomolar concentration as free, native pentapeptide and at nanomolar concentration in cryptic forms. We have optimized conditions for measurement of immunoreactive Met-enkephalin in plasma and for generation by trypsin and carboxypeptidase B of much greater amounts of total peptidase-derivable Met-enkephalin in plasma of rats, dogs, and humans. Free Met-enkephalin (11 pM) is constituted by native pentapeptide and its sulfoxide. Characterization of plasma total Met-enkephalin derived by peptidic hydrolysis revealed a small amount (38 pM) of Met-enkephalin associated with peptides of molecular mass less than 30,000 D, and probably derived from …

Alfalfa Producers: Do You Really Know How Good Your Alfalfa Is? Forage Analysis: Importance And Interpretation, Jimmy C. Henning Feb 1990

Alfalfa Producers: Do You Really Know How Good Your Alfalfa Is? Forage Analysis: Importance And Interpretation, Jimmy C. Henning

Kentucky Alfalfa and Stored Forage Conference

Forages make up over 75% of the diet of all cattle and are the basis of cow-calf industry in the midwest. However, a recent survey of over 1000 livestock producers in Missouri revealed that only 5.6 % had ever had their hay tested. They gave several reasons for why they had not tested hay (Table 1). By a large margin, the greatest reason for not testing was that they did not see a need. This fact highlights the purpose of this paper and presentation at the 10th Annual Kentucky Alfalfa Conference. This paper will explain the terms used in …

Disease Management In The Home Lawn, Paul C. Vincelli, A. J. Powell Jr.

Agriculture and Natural Resources Publications

Numerous infectious diseases can occur on lawns in Kentucky. Unless diagnosed and managed, these diseases can sometimes cause extensive damage. A sound disease management program benefits your lawn in two ways:

  • reduces the severity of lawn diseases
  • improves the lawn's recovery should a disease outbreak occur.

This publication describes lawn management practices that can help control diseases of turfgrasses commonly used in home lawns -- Kentucky bluegrass, tall fescue, and perennial ryegrass. You can control diseases of turfgrasses most effectively by using as many of the following lawn management practices as feasible.

The first step in improving your lawn is …

Right To Farm, J. L. Taraba, R. M. Williams Jan 1990

Right To Farm, J. L. Taraba, R. M. Williams

Agricultural Engineering Extension Updates

Landowners in general have the right to use their property in any manner they might find useful or enjoyable except when that use infringes on the right of their neighbor or community to use their property. Conflicting interests of neighbors have been the subject of numerous disagreements resulting in one or the other loosing his right to use his property as he wishes. The circumstances surrounding each conflict usually determines the outcome, and farmers should be aware that their right to farm may be at the mercy of courts who have sometimes been sympathetic to grievances of their more urban …

Do You Need A Water Treatment Product?: What You Need To Know And Ask Before Buying, Joseph L. Taraba, Linda M. Heaton, Thomas W. Ilvento

Agricultural Engineering Extension Updates

A homeowner may have obvious problems with the drinking water system; such as, staining of porcelain sinks, stained clothes after washing, cloudy water, foul/funny tasting or smelling water or corrosion of faucets or plumbing. The homeowners may be very concerned about their water because of recent publicity, advertisements or door-to-door sales which raised issues about the quality of the drinking water from a private or public water supply. The homeowners may be concerned about the water supply after a recent educational program that was attended or presented in the local media outlets. How does that homeowner determine if a water …

Protection Of Private Groundwater Drinking Supplies, Joseph L. Taraba, Jim Dinger, James Webb

Agricultural Engineering Extension Updates

There are three general objectives that this slide presentation concentrates on; First of all, we want to acquaint you with the hydrologic cycle. If one understands this cycle; then, an appreciation for what activities might contaminate our water supplies can be obtained. Secondly, we want to review some of the land use practices that may result in water resource contamination. Thirdly, we want to review well construction and maintenance practices that may result in contamination of an individuals source of drinking water. That brings us to the major goal of this entire program. This major goal is to get each …

Macrophages But Not B Cells From Aged Mice Are Defective In Stimulating Autoreactive T Cells In Vitro, Aruna Seth, Mitzi Nagarkatti, Prakash S. Nagarkatti, Subbarao Bondada, Venkatachalam Udhayakumar

Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics Faculty Publications

In the present study the effect of aging on the capacity of Ia+ cells to stimulate autoreactive T cells in the syngeneic mixed lymphocyte reaction (SMLR) was investigated. Using young CD4+ T cells as responders, it was observed that unseparated whole spleen cells from aged mice had normal stimulatory activity comparable to that of young spleen cells. Interestingly, however, when purified splenic adherant cells (SAC) enriched for macrophages or splenic B cells were used as stimulators, aged SAC but not aged B cells were found to be defective in stimulating autoreactive T cells. This defect in aged SAC …

Compensation For Smoking-Related Injuries: An Alternative To Strict Liability In Tort, Richard C. Ausness Jan 1990

Compensation For Smoking-Related Injuries: An Alternative To Strict Liability In Tort, Richard C. Ausness

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

The Surgeon General has described cigarette smoking as the "single most important preventable environmental factor contributing to illness, disability and death in the United States." Each year, smoking-related diseases claim more than 350,000 lives. Smoking-related illnesses also impose a huge economic burden on society. Estimates of health care costs range from $12 billion to $22 billion per year, and productivity losses due to illness and death are even greater.

Arguably, cigarette companies and their customers ought to bear the health costs of smoking. At the present time, however, the tobacco industry has largely escaped responsibility for these costs. Instead, smoking-related …

Phenotypic And Functional Properties Of B Lymphocytes From Aged Mice, Subbarao Bondada, Joan Morris, Richard J. Kryscio

Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics Faculty Publications

Phenotypic and functional properties of B lymphocytes from individual young and old mice of different inbred strains were studied. B lymphocyte subpopulation defined by the ratios of the densities of cell surface IgM and IgD were found to be altered with age. However, such alterations in B cell subsets were found only in 30-40% of the old mice. B cell mitogenic responses to anti-μ and anti-Lyb2 antibodies were decreased in a majority of DBA/2 mice. Proliferative responses to LPS and antiμ were reduced only in a minority of CBA/Ca mice but there was a very good correlation in the responsiveness …
