Examining Flow States And Motivational Perspectives Of Ashtanga Yoga Practitioners, Leslie Lynn Phillips Jan 2005

Examining Flow States And Motivational Perspectives Of Ashtanga Yoga Practitioners, Leslie Lynn Phillips

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Flow state refers to an optimal psychological experience and is associated with a number of experiential qualities one of which is complete absorption in the task at hand. Self-determination theory provides a framework for examining the relation between different types of motivation and flow because it distinguishes among different forms of motivation based on the degree that they can be considered self-determined. Although flow has been studied among athletes and, to a lesser degree, exercisers, no studies have focused on the flow experiences of yoga practitioners. Yoga, which originated in India, has been gaining popularity in the United States. The …

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Surge modeling is a tool used by engineers and utility owners in determining the surge pressures or transients that may result from routine pump and valve operations. Recent surge modeling work has focused on low and/or negative pressures within water distribution systems and how those occurrences could lead to intrusions. Effective surge modeling is needed in order to determine if the intrusion potential exists and what mitigation is needed to prevent intrusions. This work focuses on the generally unexplored area of using surge models to predict the location and duration of transient induced low and/or negative pressures within large complex …

The Effect Of Polychlorinated Biphenyls On Liver Tumor Promotion: A Role For Kupffer Cells?, Rodica Petruta Bunaciu Jan 2005

The Effect Of Polychlorinated Biphenyls On Liver Tumor Promotion: A Role For Kupffer Cells?, Rodica Petruta Bunaciu

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are ubiquitious lipophilic environmental pollutants. At least some of the PCB congeners and mixtures are hepatic tumor promoters. The mechanisms are not fully understood and might be multifactorial Besides being the most abundant congener in the environment, 2,2,4,4,5,5-hexachlorobiphenyl (PCB-153), has been previously shown to increase hepatocyte proliferation 48h after exposure in rats. The goal of this study was to determine whether hepatic Kupffer cells are important in the promoting activity of PCBs. The hypothesis of this study was that modulation of Kupffer cell activity by PCBs may contribute to PCB-induced liver tumor promotion. The experimental approach consisted …

Modulation Of The Adrenal Medullary Response To Stress By Estradiol In The Female Rat, Julye Marie Adams Jan 2005

Modulation Of The Adrenal Medullary Response To Stress By Estradiol In The Female Rat, Julye Marie Adams

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

The present study has established that physiological concentrations of estradiol can modulate stress-induced increases in plasma epinephrine (EPI). In anesthetized female rats, insulin-induced hypoglycemia (0.25 U/kg) increased plasma EPI concentration to a significantly greater extent in 14-day ovariectomized (OVEX) rats compared to sham-operated controls. In 17-estradiol (E2)-replaced OVEX rats, the hypoglycemia-induced rise in plasma EPI was significantly reduced compared to OVEX rats. This suppression was due to both decreased adrenal medullary output and increased clearance of EPI. Adrenal venous EPI concentration was significantly reduced in OVEX+E2 rats, suggesting that EPI secretion from the adrenalmedulla was decreased by E2 replacement. The …

Parent-Child Storytelling During Joint Picture-Book Reading And Relation To Language Scores Of Children With Adhd, Melinda A. Leonard

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Three questions were investigated in the current study. First, do children with ADHD have language deficiencies in comparison to non-referred peers? Second, are there diagnostic group differences in parent and child storytelling when interacting in a joint picture-book setting or in parent reported home literacy habits? Third, are these differences related to child language scores? Parents of 25 children with ADHD and 39 comparison children, average age 7 years 6 months, told their children a story based on a wordless picture-book, and children then retold the story to an examiner without using the book. In addition, children made up two …

Self-determination is the ability to control one’s life and to actively participate in the decisions which affect the direction of one’s life. This ability is considered a critical life skill for individuals with developmental disabilities. The ability to make choices, plan, and self-evaluate are among the primary skills included in the development of self-determination. Currently, there is very limited emphasis on the importance of self-determination in the literature of communication disorders. This study was designed to determine if a teaching paradigm which incorporates key elements of self-determination is as or more effective and efficient in teaching syntax than a traditional, …

Etiology Of Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome: A Proximal Link To A Distal Problem, Lori Ann Bolgla Jan 2005

Etiology Of Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome: A Proximal Link To A Distal Problem, Lori Ann Bolgla

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS) is one of the most common, but least understood, knee disorders. Fulkerson (1997) believes that pathology may result from an excessive valgus force being applied to the patella. Researchers have historically examined quadriceps strength and neuromuscular activity and knee kinematics. However, results from these works have not provided conclusive answers. Powers (2003) has theorized that other structures can influence knee function, and researchers have shown that PFPS subjects can exhibit hip weakness and demonstrate altered hip kinematics during functional activities. Although they provide preliminary evidence regarding hip influences, investigations that simultaneously examine hip and knee function …

Aberrant sensory processing has, however, been infrequently studied compared to communication and cognition in autism and existing studies have had multiple methodological deficiencies, especially with sampling procedures. Purpose. The purpose of this study is to …

Mechanism Of Cancer Selective Apoptosis By Par-4, Sushma Gurumurthy Jan 2005

Mechanism Of Cancer Selective Apoptosis By Par-4, Sushma Gurumurthy

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Despite distinct dissimilarities, diverse cancers express several common pro-tumorigenic traits. We present here evidence that the pro-apoptotic protein Par-4 utilizes one such common tumorigenic trait to become selectively activated and induce apoptosis in cancer cells. Elevated PKA activity noted in cancer cells activated the apoptotic function of ectopic Par-4 or its SAC domain, which induces apoptosis selectively in cancer cells and not in normal or immortalized cells. PKA preferentially phosphorylated Par-4 at the T155 residue within the SAC domain in cancer cells. Moreover, pharmacological-, peptide- or siRNA-mediated inhibition of PKA activity in cancer cells resulted in abrogation of both T155 …

Interactions Between Selenium And Polychlorinated Biphenyls (Pcbs), Divinia Nolasco Stemm Jan 2005

Interactions Between Selenium And Polychlorinated Biphenyls (Pcbs), Divinia Nolasco Stemm

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

This study investigated the interaction between polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and selenium to explain the mechanism involved that could affect selenium metabolism and its anti-cancer property. PCBs congeners and mixtures were previously found to reduce hepatic Se and Se-dependent glutathione peroxidase activity. I hypothesized that certain PCB congeners affect selenium metabolism in the rat liver resulting in diminished antioxidant capacity of selenoproteins, which could alter the ability of Se to protect against PCBs induced tumor promotion. In the first study, the influence of 3,3,4,4-tetrachlorobiphenyl (PCB 77) on hepatic Se and glutathione peroxidase (GPx1) activity as well as cytochrome P450 1A1 induction …

An Examination Of Dietary Amendments To Affect Phosphorus Utilization In Growing Pigs, Jorge Hernan Agudelo-Trujillo Jan 2005

An Examination Of Dietary Amendments To Affect Phosphorus Utilization In Growing Pigs, Jorge Hernan Agudelo-Trujillo

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

For economical and ecological reasons, efficiency and profitability ofswine production relies heavily on the way pigs utilize key nutrients such as P,which is considered a potential pollutant of water ecosystems. Although cerealgrains and oilseed meals contain enough P to fulfill the biological needs of pigs, most of this P is tightly bound as phytate. As pigs do not have enough phytase(PHY) to cleave P from phytate, it is excreted in the feces. To prevent adeficiency, diets have traditionally been supplemented with highly availableinorganic sources of P. Today, an environmentally-friendly alternative is tosupplement diets with PHY.Growth promoting antibiotics are also used to …

Innovative Product Design For Sustainability Enhancement In Aluminum Beverage Cans Based On Design For Sustainability Concepts, Jason Chun Tchen Liew

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

A new methodology for innovative product development based on the application of sustainability principles for the entire life-cycle of a product and beyond is developed. This involves an analysis of multi-life cycle material flow leading towards perpetual life products, making it truly sustainable. In order to achieve the function of such a sustainable product, it has to fulfill the concept of 6R (Recover, Reuse, Recycle, Redesign, Reduce and Remanufacture), which are composed of 6 stages of material flow in a products life, as opposed to the traditional 3R (Reduce, Reuse, Recover) concept. We apply the 6R concept in designing a …
