An Options Analysis –Final Waste Management, Breanne Kahnk, Todd Martin
World of Coal Ash Proceedings
Final Waste Management Options Analysis Authors Ms. BreAnne Kahnk - United States - TRC Mr. Todd Martin - United States - TRC Abstract The recent trend of retiring coal-fired power plants in favor of gas-fired and renewable energy facilities has resulted in the need for a number of partially filled CCR landfills to be closed prematurely. In addition, forthcoming CCR rule changes designed to address legacy CCR material will be a driver for making additional closure decisions for many historical CCR landfills. The costs and labor burden associated with the long-term care of a prematurely closed or legacy CCR landfill …

Laboratory treatability studies can be used to evaluate and optimize groundwater treatment options for contaminants of concern (COCs) found at coal combustion residual (CCR) sites. An important consideration in groundwater treatment selection is the suitability of monitored natural attenuation (MNA) as a treatment component or as a stand-alone passive treatment. This presentation will focus on the use of treatability testing to evaluate natural and enhanced attenuation treatment options for redox sensitive metals in CCR-impacted groundwater. In one demonstration, a comprehensive laboratory program was performed based upon the USEPA’s tiered approach to identify the natural attenuation processes, rates, attenuation capacities, and …

World of Coal Ash Proceedings
Traditional means of remediating coal combustion residual (CCR) materials include excavation and off-site disposal. Site-specific geotechnical and hydrological features can dramatically increase the cost and complexity of remediation efforts. As such, it is often advisable to explore ways to properly leave material on-site. One such way may be via in-situ stabilization/solidification (ISS). ISS is a technically sound and economical solution for remediating CCR and other wastes and was recently used as part of the in- place closure of a 2.25-acre ash pond. In the project scenario described herein, the Contractor evaluated multiple means of ash stabilization through the use of …
