Deep Crustal Boundaries As Fluid Conduits: A Geochemical Investigation Of Mvt Mineralization In Kentucky And Beyond, Dairian Boddy M. Boddy
Theses and Dissertations--Earth and Environmental Sciences
Critical minerals are vital to the United States economy and national security, yet their supply chains are at risk. Common minerals in Mississippi Valley-type (MVT) deposits, such as sphalerite, galena, fluorite, and barite, host critical metals such as barium, gallium, germanium, and zinc, which are essential for energy technologies. An investigation of three MVT mineral districts in Kentucky elucidated previously unrecognized systematics, genetic relationships, and sources of ore components using stable and radiogenic isotope geochemistry, particularly from galena, sphalerite, barite, and gangue minerals (e.g., carbonates). The localization and dominant type of mineralization in each district are potentially influenced by deep …

In 2020, American cities experienced mass protest after fatal police violence against Black Americans. Did police address these protests differently after the murder of George Floyd or the protests in their communities? Did that response vary depending on the racial or ideological makeup of their constituents? We link policing protests and Facebook posts from about 4,000 American police departments to investigate differences in agency responses to protest. Departments posted more about protest after Floyd's death, especially in those communities that also had a policing protest. Republican cities were less likely to post about protests, but racial demographics are not associated …

Sharp Dual-Regime Thermal Transition Driven By Bead Morphology In Metal Fused Filament Fabrication, Martin Gamesu, Nelson K. Akafuah
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications
This work develops a GPU-accelerated, bead-resolved digital twin for FFF that reconstructs super-elliptic filament geometries from G-code and simulates transient heat transfer via voxel-level activation synchronised to deposition order. Applied to a parametric study of two metal–polymer composites (Cu–PLA and IN718–PLA) across five super-ellipse exponents (n = 2.0, 2.7, 2.8, 2.9, 3.0), the framework reveals a sharp thermal regime transition: a 43% increase in interlayer contact width (n = 2.0 → 2.7) and 53% (n = 2.0 → 2.9) produce negligible thermal change (|Cohen’s d| < 0.02 for IN718-PLA and < 0.2 for Cu-PLA), while n = 3.0 triggers +150–178% increases in bonding windows, −55 to −60% reductions in cooling rate, and a 27–45-fold increase in thermal reactivation. The transition amplifies across temperature thresholds (2× at 170 °C, 15.8× at the glass transition), reverses the deposition-order thermal gradient (r = −0.83 to +0.64 for IN718-PLA and −0.55 to +0.81 for Cu-PLA), and causes surrogate model failure (cross-regime R² = −4.6). These findings establish bead morphology as a sharp morphology-driven threshold requiring regime-aware, material-specific digital twin. At the transition, weld-strength increases while cooling-rate decreases, indicating improved bonding uniformity and reduced residual-stress heterogeneity.
The Impact Of A Kentucky Nutrition Education Program Social Marketing Campaign On Resident Health, Trinity Elizabeth Foster
The Impact Of A Kentucky Nutrition Education Program Social Marketing Campaign On Resident Health, Trinity Elizabeth Foster
Theses and Dissertations--Agricultural Economics
Poor diet quality and physical inactivity are common health issues in the United States. To remedy these issues among low-income households, the United States Department of Agriculture created the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education Program (SNAP-Ed), which promoted healthy eating and physically active lifestyles through multiple avenues. The social marketing approach of SNAP-Ed uses marketing strategies to relay information to the public. In Kentucky, a statewide billboard campaign was launched in 2018 encouraging residents to focus on nutrition and physical activity. This study investigates the impact of that campaign on health outcomes in counties throughout the state. Using billboard location …

Introduction: Traditional methods to determine the agronomic optimum nitrogen rate (AONR) for corn (Zea mays L.) rely on grain yield data, limiting in-season decision-making for nitrogen (N) management. Vegetation indices (VIs) derived from satellite imagery can serve as proxies for grain yield and help estimate in-season AONR, enabling timely sidedress applications. This study aimed to (1) quantify how VI–yield relationships vary during the vegetative period across fields with different tillage systems and crop residue; (2) determine whether VI–N response curves can be used to estimate AONR (AONRvi); and (3) assess the accuracy of AONRvi relative to yield-based AONR (AONRy). …

The vagina is a fibromuscular tube-shaped organ that plays critical roles in menstruation, pregnancy, and female sexual health. Vaginal tissue constituents, including cells and extracellular matrix components, contribute to tissue structure, function, and prevention of injury and pathology. However, much microstructural function remains unknown, including how the fiber-cell and cell–cell interactions influence macromechanical properties. A deeper understanding of these interactions will provide critical information needed to reduce and prevent vaginal pathologies. Our objective for this work is to design a novel tissue-mimicking biomaterial for vaginal tissue engineering, and characterize its biological and mechanical performance in the vaginal microenvironment. We successfully …

Personal experiences with public officials influence how those officials are perceived. We question whether these experiential effects extend to other officials. If people draw on what they know to make inferences about unfamiliar evaluative targets, then interactions with one actor may shape evaluations of other independent actors. Focusing on police and courts, analyses of data from two surveys reveal that personal interactions with public officials produce spillover effects on appraisals of officials in different sectors. The findings indicate that experiential spillover constitutes an underappreciated force in public opinion, one that operates outside the control of the actors being evaluated.
Belting In Musical Theatre: Vocal Pathologies, Injuries, And Pedagogical Implications, Kaylee Piatt
Belting In Musical Theatre: Vocal Pathologies, Injuries, And Pedagogical Implications, Kaylee Piatt
Theses and Dissertations--Music
Belting has become one of the most defining and contested vocal styles in contemporary musical theatre. Valued for its dramatic immediacy, speech-like intensity, and ability to cut through amplified orchestration, belting is frequently associated with heightened injury risk and pedagogical controversy. This thesis examines the relationship between belting, vocal pathology, and pedagogy through an interdisciplinary lens that integrates voice science, clinical literature, and professional performance practice. Rather than framing belting as an inherently harmful or stylistically aberrant technique, this study conceptualizes belting as a functional vocal coordination shaped by physiological mechanisms, cumulative vocal load, and occupational demands.

Reimagining The Reduction: A Pianist’S Guide To The Piano Reductions Of Korngold’S Violin Concerto And Vaughan Williams’S Tuba Concerto, Zhongyue Zhang
Theses and Dissertations--Music
Piano reductions are an essential medium through which collaborative pianists work with orchestral concertos. However, many existing reductions, particularly of 20th century works, hinder effective performance in terms of orchestral fidelity and feasibility of execution. The problem is twofold: reductions may contain technically cumbersome passages with diminishing musical returns; they may also omit or misrepresent important orchestral effects and textures. For these problematic situations, this work presents pianistic revisions that aim to preserve essential orchestral sound characteristics. Using the first movements of Erich Wolfgang Korngold’s Violin Concerto and Ralph Vaughan Williams’s Tuba Concerto as examples, this work demonstrates a systematic …

A Technical And Performance Re-Examination Of Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco’S Escarramán, Op. 177: Beyond The Angelo Gilardino Publication. A New Performance Edition Of Gallarda, Daniel Monroy Reyes
Theses and Dissertations--Music
This dissertation provides a technical and performance-oriented re-examination of the first four movements of Escarramán: A Suite of Spanish Dances from the XVIth Century (After Cervantes), Op. 177, by Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco. It argues that the suite embodies a fundamental tension between the composer’s original compositional and structural intentions and the ergonomic limitations of the guitar, and evaluates the proposed solutions by Angelo Gilardino in the 1979 Bèrben edition.
This research employs a comparative, practice-led framework to address the paradox of Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s non-idiomatic writing. Its primary contribution is the development of a performance synthesis that maintains harmonic integrity while enhancing …

The Political Economy Of Pfas Treatment And Water Regionalization In Harrison County, Kentucky, Jackson S. Patru, Rajan Sampat
MPA/MPP/MPFM Capstone Projects
The discovery of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in the water supply of Harrison County, Kentucky has prompted an urgent reevaluation of local treatment infrastructure. This situation has exposed a complex political economy between the City of Cynthiana, which owns and operates the municipal water plant, and the Harrison County Water Association (HCWA), which represents the majority of the ratepayers supplied by the plant. Using a qualitative research design grounded in inductive thematic analysis, semi-structured interviews were conducted with leadership from both Cynthiana and HCWA, as well as operators at the treatment plant, to evaluate two proposed solutions: a $14 …

MPA/MPP/MPFM Capstone Projects
Tax Increment Financing (TIF) is a widely used local government tool for redevelopment and economic growth, yet its expanding application has raised questions regarding its design, governance, and measurable outcomes. This study compares two primary uses of TIF: blight remediation and economic development. While remediation-focused TIF is intended to address identifiable market failures in distressed areas, economic development TIF is typically used to attract or accelerate private investment in more competitive environments.
Using a structured comparative analysis of selected Kentucky TIF districts, this research evaluates how differences in statutory justification, financing mechanisms, governance structures, and performance measures align with each …
The Essence Of The Heart: Layered Human Experience In Eva Jessye’S My Spirituals, Jessica Brunet
The Essence Of The Heart: Layered Human Experience In Eva Jessye’S My Spirituals, Jessica Brunet
Theses and Dissertations--Music
Much of the spiritual repertory has been transcribed as documentation of purely melodic and lyrical content, and many songs have been arranged by some of the greatest figures in twentieth- and twenty-first century music history, including Harry T. Burleigh, Hall Johnson, Margaret Bonds, and Jacqueline B. Hairston. On this roster of luminaries is Dr. Eva Jessye (1895-1992).
If Eva Jessye is remembered at all, it is typically in the context of her role as choral director for the original production of Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess (1935). Among a litany of other accomplishments, however, Dr. Jessye also published a collection of …

Red Clover Isoflavones And Establishment In The Context Of Tall Fescue Toxicosis Mitigation In The Mid-South, Jonathan L. Stephens
Theses and Dissertations--Plant and Soil Sciences
Low levels of red clover (Trifolium pratense L.) have been shown to mitigate tall fescue (Lolium arundinaceum (Schreb.) toxicosis symptoms. This is because of the presence of plant-produced compounds known as isoflavones. Production of a red clover supplement on a commercial scale would require industrial-level processing of raw plant material into granules or pellets. The first study of this thesis evaluated the impact of drying temperature on bioavailability of isoflavones. Drying temperatures up to 104°C had minimal impact on isoflavone concentrations. Additionally, varietal differences in isoflavone concentrations were documented. The second study of this thesis evaluated optimal establishment …

Introduction: Sleep disruption is an early feature of Alzheimer's disease (AD), but the cellular mechanisms linking amyloid pathology to sleep loss remain unclear.
Methods: Electroencephalography/electromyography (EEG/EMG) recordings, quantitative EEG analysis, and sleep deprivation were performed in APPswe/PSEN1dE9 (APP/PS1) mice at different stages of pathology relative to normal aging. Amyloid burden and microglial density were quantified with whole-brain light-sheet microscopy. CSF1R-mediated microglial depletion explored effects of microglia on sleep loss.
Results: Amyloid plaques caused non–rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep loss that did not worsen with increased plaque burden. Aging reduced REM sleep and eliminated sleep rebound. Amyloid pathology was associated with …

Pediatric cancer survival now exceeds 85% owing, in part, to advances and the use of combination chemotherapy treatments such as CHOP (cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, and prednisone). Despite its efficacy, CHOP may cause off-target effects during critical pediatric development periods such as impairments of skeletal muscle. We evaluated the acute effects of a CHOP administered to C57Bl/6J mice from postnatal day 28 to 48. CHOP slowed body-weight gain and led to a smaller gastrocnemius fiber cross-sectional area by ~25% in both sexes (n ¼ 11 or 12 males; n ¼ 8 or 9 females). RNA sequencing detected 214 differentially expressed genes …

Cancer cachexia is a wasting condition, primarily affecting skeletal muscle, impairing patients’ quality of life, prognosis, and survival. The molecular triggers are incompletely defined, but given prior evidence for epigenetic plasticity in muscle, we speculate that dysregulated DNA methylation plays a role in muscle transcriptional alterations mediating cachexia severity. We aimed to describe and integrate the cachexia methylome and transcriptome. We used a time course approach in a mild cachexia model (colon-26, C26) coupled with a severe cachexia genetic model (ApcMin/+) in both biological sexes to assess the methylome across degrees of cachexia pathology. The muscle methylome and …

INTRODUCTION: The incidence of Alzheimer's disease (AD) in Down syndrome (DS) exceeds 90%. Approximately 50% of people with DS have congenital heart disease (CHD). Having CHD increases risk for early-onset AD in populations without DS, but it is unclear if CHD influences AD in DS. METHODS: Data from the Alzheimer Biomarker Consortium-Down Syndrome (ABC-DS) were used. Participants with CHD (n = 82, mean age = 39.9 ± 8.5 years, 97.6% White race) were age- and sex-matched to participants without CHD (n = 82, mean age = 40.5 ± 8.1 years, 98.8% White race). Long-read single-cell RNA sequencing provides an opportunity to understand human health and disease at a level difficult to resolve with bulk or short-read methods. This approach enables isoform-level investigation of cellular diversity and disease mechanisms and definition of cell-types, rather than using genes alone. Using a modified, microfluidic-free PIPseq workflow and computational pipeline adapted for Oxford Nanopore long-read sequencing, we generated the largest long-read single-cell dataset of human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from a single donor to date, the first with sufficient cell numbers to detect megakaryocytes. This study profiled isoform usage across immune cells, integrating marker expression and …

Background: The plant–microbe interaction between tall fescue and its endophyte Epichloë coenophiala can affect ecosystem responses to changing rainfall patterns and increasing temperatures. Endophyte-infected (E+) stands often exhibit improved stress tolerance and differing soil greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions compared to endophyte-free (E−) stands. However, it is unknown if mammalian nontoxic endophyte (NTE) strains introduced into some tall fescue cultivars confer differing stress tolerances or reduce soil GHG emissions.
Methods: We quantified the impact of fescue-NTE symbioses in Jesup and Texoma on biomass and GHG emissions in response to increased temperature (+3°C) and altered precipitation (50% lengthened interval between events) using …

Doubled haploid (DH) technology can fast-track crop breeding.Haploid induction yields haploids with only one set of genomes, which are usually sterile.Haploid fertility (HF) is the ability of haploid plants to set seed, and it is a critical bottleneck in DH pipelines.Genetic mechanisms to restore HF hold immense potential in DH crop breeding, yet its phenotyping remains manual, destructive, and inconsistent. While recent advances in imaging and machine learning have improved throughput for general plant traits, no curated image dataset exists for Arabidopsis thaliana that explicitly represents HF.Here, we present AutoSiQ, a dataset and baseline deep learning pipeline for automated HF quantification.AutoSiQ …

Background: Fusarium graminearum, one of the causal agents of ear rot in maize and head blight of cereal grains, also infects hemp (Cannabis sativa L. containing a maximum of 0.3% tetrahydrocannabinol or THC). This fungal pathogen produces trichothecene mycotoxins when it infects maize and cereal grains, but little is known about its production of mycotoxins in hemp. A method was developed to separate mycotoxins deoxynivalenol (DON), 15-acetyldeoxynivalenol (15-ADON), and 3-acetyldeoxynivalenol (3-ADON) in commercial hemp seed and grain (harvested tissue), using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with ultraviolet detection. Results: In HPLC analysis of commercial hemp seed, DON was separated from matrix …

Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) is a complex neurodegenerative disease with two hallmark pathologies: extracellular amyloid-b (Ab) and intracellular neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs). Ab is proteolytically processed from amyloid precursor protein (APP) by b-secretase and g-secretase as a monomeric peptide prone to aggregation. Eventually, the aggregate-prone monomers will form dense plaques that are difficult to break down and remove. These plaques begin to deposit into the cortex decades prior to the formation of NFTs and the onset of cognitive decline. NFTs are comprised of hyper-phosphorylated tau. Tau is a protein that serves to promote and stabilize the formation of microtubules. The formation of …

Background: Research on the effectiveness of digital health campaign strategies is lacking. Understanding performance outcomes is essential for the successful implementation of campaigns. Two studies examined platforms, tactics, and content of digital health campaigns using paid media performance data. Objective: This analysis compared 2 digital advertising methods (social media and banner or display) using click-through rate (CTR) and cost-per-click (CPC) as performance measures. Performance differences by state, community type, message approach, format, and image type were assessed. CTR and CPC served as measures in determining performance differences between social media and banner or display. Methods: This cross-sectional secondary analysis examined …
