OBJECTIVES: Cohort studies must implement effective retention strategies to produce internally valid and generalizable results. Ensuring all study participants are retained, particularly those involved in the criminal legal system, ensures study findings and future interventions will be relevant to this group, who are often lost to follow-up: critical to achieving health equity. Our objective was to characterize retention strategies and describe overall retention among an 18-month longitudinal cohort study of persons on community supervision prior to and during the COVID-19 pandemic.
METHODS: We implemented various retention strategy best-practices (e.g., multiple forms of locator information, training study staff on rapport building, …
An Exploration And Performance Of Underrepresented Composers For Cello, Anna M. Watrous
An Exploration And Performance Of Underrepresented Composers For Cello, Anna M. Watrous
Libraries Award for Undergraduate Scholarship
As I was preparing for my senior degree cello recital (the performance component of this thesis) last summer, I realized that all the composers I planned on programming were famous composers that were white men. As a woman cellist, teacher, and arts advocate, I knew this was not the story that I wanted to tell through my recital. I realized that there was no reason to wait until after graduation when I was “finished learning” to be an advocate for those underrepresented in the arts, I could start with this recital. Through the process of programming, preparing, and performing this …
A Peculiar Institution: White Supremacy And The Black Guides Of Mammoth Cave, Seth Garcia
A Peculiar Institution: White Supremacy And The Black Guides Of Mammoth Cave, Seth Garcia
Libraries Award for Undergraduate Scholarship
Intensive tourist operations at Mammoth Cave began in 1838 when Frank Gorin purchased the cave property. He brought with him Stephen Bishop, an enslaved person who would become famous across the Western world for his explorations of the cave and his knowledge of its geology. Gorin would also lease Nicholas and Matterson Bransford, and these three men would begin a 100-year history of black guides at Mammoth Cave. This essay utilizes source material written by white visitors in diaries, guidebooks, and travelers’ accounts to better understand white supremacy during the mid to late 19th century. The guides were in a …

Real-Time Surveillance Of The Drug Epidemic: An Assessment And Comparative Visualization Of Substance Abuse In The Commonwealth Of Kentucky, Julia Van Hosen
Theses and Dissertations--Public Health (M.P.H. & Dr.P.H.)
The purpose of this study was to implement and examine a new surveillance system for Kentucky State Police’s forensics unit to track trends of illicit drugs and drug trafficking, and to see if the implementation of this new system was associated with a decrease in overall drug counts over a period of five months. An extensive review of the literature showed that the drug epidemic in the United States continues to worsen, with public health and law enforcement institutions leading the fight in attempting to end the epidemic, but little evidence showing these two joining forces to work together.

Developing Ecologically Valid Clinical Tools For Persons With Tbi: Understanding The Role And Impact Of Distractions, Deanna Pinnow
Developing Ecologically Valid Clinical Tools For Persons With Tbi: Understanding The Role And Impact Of Distractions, Deanna Pinnow
Theses and Dissertations--Rehabilitation Sciences
There is a critical need for the development of ecologically valid clinical tools to assess real-life cognitive functioning in persons impacted by traumatic brain injury (TBI). Chronic cognitive impairments that are exacerbated by distractions are one of the core factors contributing to poor home and community re-integration post injury. Simulation-based digital platforms (i.e., virtual reality, augmented reality, and mixed reality) have become potential solutions for eliciting real-world cognitive performance in clinical settings. Yet, there is a paucity of research investigating the role and impact of distractions on cognition. As a result, there is no clear framework of measuring distractions to …

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications
We examine the factors responsible for the variation in the ionization parameter (U) of high-redshift star-forming galaxies based on medium-resolution JWST/NIRSpec observations obtained by the Cosmic Evolution Early Release Science survey. The sample consists of 48 galaxies with redshifts zspec = 2.7−6.3, which are largely representative of typical galaxies at these redshifts. The [S II] λλ6718, 6733 doublet is used to estimate electron densities (n e), and dust-corrected Hα luminosities are used to compute ionizing photon rates (Q). Using composite spectra of galaxies in bins of [O III] λλ4960, 5008/[O II] λλ3727, 3730 (O32) as a proxy for U, we …

The Dust-To-Gas Mass Ratio Of Luminous Galaxies As A Function Of Their Metallicity At Cosmic Noon, Gergö Popping, Irene Shivaei, Ryan L. Sanders, Tucker Jones, Alexandra Pope, Naveen Reddy, Alice E. Shapley, Alison L. Coil, Mariska Kriek
Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications
Aims. We aim to quantify the relation between the dust-to-gas mass ratio (DTG) and gas-phase metallicity of z = 2.1-2.5 luminous galaxies and contrast this high-redshift relation against analogous constraints at z = 0.
Methods. We present a sample of ten star-forming main-sequence galaxies in the redshift range 2.1 < z < 2.5 with rest-optical emission-line information available from the MOSDEF survey and with ALMA 1.2 millimetre and CO J = 3-2 follow-up observations. The galaxies have stellar masses ranging from 1010.3 to 1010.6 M? and cover a range in star-formation rate from 35 to 145 M? yr-1. We calculated the gas-phase oxygen abundance of these galaxies from rest-optical nebular emission lines (8.4 < 12+log (O=H) < 8.8, corresponding to 0.5..1.25 Z?). We estimated the dust and H2 masses of the galaxies (using a metallicity-dependent CO-to-H2 conversion factor) from the 1.2mm and CO J = 3..2 observations, respectively, from which we estimated a DTG.
Results. We find that the galaxies in this sample follow the trends already observed between CO line luminosity and dust-continuum luminosity from z = 0 to z = 3, extending such trends to fainter galaxies at 2.1 < z < 2.5 than observed to date. We find no second-order metallicity dependence in the CO - dust-continuum luminosity relation for the galaxies presented in this work. The DTGs of main-sequence galaxies at 2.1 < z < 2.5 are consistent with an increase in the DTG with gas-phase metallicity. The metallicity dependence of the DTG is driven by the metallicity dependence of the CO-to-H2 conversion factor. Galaxies at z = 2.1-2.5 are furthermore consistent with the DTG-metallicity relation found at z = 0 (i.e. with no significant evolution), providing relevant constraints for galaxy formation models. These results furthermore imply that the metallicity of galaxies should be taken into account when estimating cold-gas masses from dust-continuum emission, which is especially relevant when studying metal-poor low-mass or high-redshift galaxies.

Measurements Of Dielectron Production In Au + Au Collisions At √Snn = 27, 39, And 62.4 Gev From The Star Experiment, Star Collaboration
Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications
We report systematic measurements of dielectron (e+e−) invariant-mass Mee spectra at midrapidity in Au + Au collisions at √s NN = 27, 39, and 62.4 GeV taken with the STAR detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. For all energies studied, a significant excess yield of dielectrons is observed in the low-mass region (0.40 < M ee < 0.75 MeV/c2 ) compared to hadronic cocktail simulations at freeze-out. Models that include an in-medium broadening of the ρ-meson spectral function consistently describe the observed excess. In addition, we report acceptance-corrected dielectron-excess spectra for Au + Au collisions at midrapidity (|yee| < 1) in the 0–80% centrality bin for each collision energy. The integrated excess yields for 0.4 < Mee < 0.75 GeV/c2 , normalized by the charged particle multiplicity at midrapidity, are compared with previously published measurements for Au + Au at √s NN = 19.6 and 200 GeV. Models that include an in-medium broadening of the ρ-meson spectral function consistently describe the observed excess. The normalized excess yields in the low-mass region show no significant collision energy dependence. The data, however, are consistent with model calculations that demonstrate a modest energy dependence.
Measurements Of The Elliptic And Triangular Azimuthal Anisotropies In Central 3he + Au, D + Au And P + Au Collisions At √Snn P = 200 Gev, Star Collaboration
Measurements Of The Elliptic And Triangular Azimuthal Anisotropies In Central 3he + Au, D + Au And P + Au Collisions At √Snn P = 200 Gev, Star Collaboration
Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications
The elliptic (v2) and triangular (v3) azimuthal anisotropy coefficients in central He3+Au, d+Au, and p+Au collisions at sNN=200 GeV are measured as a function of transverse momentum (pT) at midrapidity (|η|< 0.9), via the azimuthal angular correlation between two particles both at |η|< 0.9. While the v2(pT) values depend on the colliding systems, the v3(pT) values are system independent within the uncertainties, suggesting an influence on eccentricity from subnucleonic fluctuations in these small-sized systems. These results also provide stringent constraints for the hydrodynamic modeling of these systems.

Observation Of Directed Flow Of Hypernuclei 3/Λ H And 4/Λ H In √𝑠nn=3 Gev Au+Au Collisions At Rhic, Star Collaboration
Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications
We report here the first observation of directed flow (v1) of the hypernuclei H/Λ 3 and H/Λ 4 in mid-central Au+Au collisions at √sNN=3 GeV at RHIC. These data are taken as part of the beam energy scan program carried out by the STAR experiment. From 165×106 events in 5%-40% centrality, about 8400 H/Λ 3 and 5200 H/Λ 4 candidates are reconstructed through two- and three-body decay channels. We observe that these hypernuclei exhibit significant directed flow. Comparing to that of light nuclei, it is found that the midrapidity v1 slopes of H/Λ 3 and H/Λ 4 follow baryon number …
Beam Energy Dependence Of Fifth- And Sixth-Order Net-Proton Number Fluctuations In Au + Au Collisions At Rhic, Star Collaboration
Beam Energy Dependence Of Fifth- And Sixth-Order Net-Proton Number Fluctuations In Au + Au Collisions At Rhic, Star Collaboration
Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications
We report the beam energy and collision centrality dependence of fifth and sixth order cumulants (C5, C6) and factorial cumulants (κ5, κ6) of net-proton and proton number distributions, from center-of-mass energy (sNN) 3 GeV to 200 GeV Au+Au collisions at RHIC. Cumulant ratios of net-proton (taken as proxy for net-baryon) distributions generally follow the hierarchy expected from QCD thermodynamics, except for the case of collisions at 3 GeV. The measured values of C6/C2 for 0%-40% centrality collisions show progressively negative trend with decreasing energy, while it is positive for the lowest energy studied. These observed negative signs are consistent with …
Internalized Homonegativity And The Mental Health Of Lesbian, Gay, And Bisexual Individuals: An Integrative Treatment Approach, David Kearby
Internalized Homonegativity And The Mental Health Of Lesbian, Gay, And Bisexual Individuals: An Integrative Treatment Approach, David Kearby
DSW Capstone Projects
Lesbian, gay, and bisexual individuals (LGBI) have a higher rate of mental health disorders than the general population. The mental health disparities experienced by LGBI are positively correlated with higher internalized homonegativity (IH) levels, which impacts their functioning at the unconscious, cognitive, and interpersonal levels. Thus, effective interventions targeting the mental health of LGBI must consider IH's intrapsychic, cognitive, and interpersonal nature. An integrative psychotherapy approach addressing the mental health and IH of LGBI is needed to address the intrapsychic, cognitive, and interpersonal factors at play.
Product one of this capstone is a systematic literature review that identified psychotherapeutic interventions …
Three Essays On Health, Food, And Agricultural Economics, Saber Feizy
Three Essays On Health, Food, And Agricultural Economics, Saber Feizy
Theses and Dissertations--Agricultural Economics
This dissertation comprises three distinct but interrelated projects that explore the intersection of agriculture, nutrition, and economics. The first project investigates the impact of Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) food programs on the health outcomes of its participants. Using fixed effects models and a matching algorithm, the study finds that while conventional fixed effects models indicate a significant effect of CSA participation on diet-related medical expenditures, our modified time-heterogenous fixed effects model did not find a meaningful effect. The results of the matching method are consistent with those of our modified model.
The second project examines racial disparities in the prevalence …

Background: The ε4 allele of the apolipoprotein (APOE) gene and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are associated with cognitive deficits. Both associations may vary depending on age. No previous study has examined a possible three‐way interaction between APOE ε4, PTSD, and age on cognitive functioning.
Methods: Data were analyzed from 1244 European‐American U.S. military veterans who participated in the 2011 National Health and Resilience in Veterans Study (NHRVS). Analyses of covariance were used to examine the main effects and in- teractions of APOE ε4, PTSD, and age on learning/working memory (LWM) and attention/psychomotor (APM) performance.
Results: A significant three‐way interaction between …

Building Energy Modeling And Studies Of Electric Power Distribution Systems With Distributed Energy Resources, Evan S. Jones
Theses and Dissertations--Electrical and Computer Engineering
There is significant opportunity for savings in energy and investment from improved performance of electric Power Distribution Systems (PDSs) through optimal planning and operation of conventional voltage-controlling devices. Novel multi-step model conversion and optimal capacitor planning (OCP) procedures are proposed for large-scale utility PDSs and are exemplified with an existing utility circuit of approximately 4,000 buses. Simulated optimal control and operation is achieved with a cluster-based approach that utilizes load-forecasting to minimize equipment degradation by intelligently dispersing device setting adjustments over time such that they remain most applicable. Improved performance may also be achieved through smart building technologies and Virtual …

Cumulative Risk For Children’S Behavior Problems And Child Abuse Potential Among Mothers Receiving Substance Use Treatment: The Unique Role Of Parenting Stress, Stephanie Gusler, Angela Moreland
Psychiatry Faculty Publications
There is a high prevalence of children whose parents suffer with a substance use disorder (SUD), which is associated with negative outcomes for children such as behavior problems and parents’ child abuse potential. To understand negative consequences for children, it is important to consider a cumulative risk model, examining the impact of multiple co-occurring risks, as well as examine unique singular risk factors, such as parenting stress, which may have a direct effect on outcomes as well as mediate an association between cumulative risk and outcomes. Data came from 99 mothers with SUD, engaged in a substance treatment program. Results …

During adolescence, the brain is highly susceptible to alcohol-induced damage and subsequent neuroimmune responses, effects which may enhance development of an alcohol use disorder (AUD). Neuroimmune reactions are implicated in adolescent alcohol exposure escalating adulthood drinking. Therefore, we investigated whether intermittent alcohol exposure in male, adolescent rats (AIE) escalated adult drinking via two-bottle choice (2BC). We also examined the influence of housing environment across three groups: standard (group-housed with enrichment during 2BC), impoverished (group-housed without enrichment during 2BC), or isolation (single-housed without bedding or enrichment throughout). In the standard group immediately after AIE/saline and after 2BC, we also examined the …

The Prepare Mobile Program For Hiv Prevention In Washington D.C., Gabrielle Cochran
Theses and Dissertations--Public Health (M.P.H. & Dr.P.H.)
Incidence rates of HIV have decreased in the United States in the past decade, but the southern United States has higher rates of HIV than other regions, and cities in the south, like Washington D.C., have some of the highest rates of HIV incidence in the nation. Risky sexual behavior, needle sharing, and substance use increase the risk of transmitting or acquiring HIV, and these behaviors are more common among unhoused people (CDC, 2021; CPPH, 2022).
Expansion of community resources in cities with high levels of HIV have allowed for many people at high risk for HIV to comply with …

The least restrictive environment (LRE) is the educational placement determined necessary for obtaining maximum educational benefits. The individualized education program (IEP) team determines the LRE after analyzing the student’s academic and behavioral data and assessing the student’s unique needs. Specific special educational labels may produce a higher-than-normal frequency of more restrictive environment decisions by the IEP team. The current study surveyed general education elementary teachers about LRE placements of a hypothetical student with either autism spectrum disorder or emotional and behavioral disorders. Teachers were provided with a hypothetical vignette of a student engaging in challenging behavior, followed by hypothetical data …
