Pneumotachograph, Louis Diamond, William T. Lipscomb Feb 1973

Pneumotachograph, Louis Diamond, William T. Lipscomb

Pharmacology and Nutritional Sciences Faculty Patents

A pneumotachograph suitable for measuring flow rates of respiratory gases in small animals and comprising essentially a flow-resisting element which can be placed in series with a subject''s airway. The pressure drop across the resistive element is proportional to the rate of airflow and is linear over the range of flows which one normally would expect to encounter in small animals (0-2 liters/min.).

Social And Cultural Impact Of A Proposed Reservoir On A Rural Kentucky School District, Charles R. Smith, Philip Drucker Jan 1973

Social And Cultural Impact Of A Proposed Reservoir On A Rural Kentucky School District, Charles R. Smith, Philip Drucker

KWRRI Research Reports

This study utilizes anthropological concepts and research methods to study the educational system of a Central Kentucky school district with the goal of predicting the impact on it of a proposed multi-purpose (flood control, recreation, etc.) reservoir, and proposing options for forestalling dysfunctional aspects of that impact. The impact will result from the fact that although the county is now rurally oriented, the proposed reservoir will attract (has already begun to attract) urbanite residents from nearby Louisville, Kentucky's largest urban center, who can be expected to bring urban values concerning education, as well as other areas. To assess probable directions …

A Survey Of State Regulations Of Dredge And Fill Operations In Nonnavigable Waters, Richard C. Ausness

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

Several states have recently enacted legislation regulating dredge and fill operations in certain classes of nonnavigable waters. Professor Ausness examines some of the decisions arising under these acts to determine if any distinguishable trend has emerged regarding the nature and extent of constitutional limitations on the regulation of such activities.

Mercury-Filled Settlement Gage, Tommy C. Hopkins, Robert C. Deen Dec 1972

Mercury-Filled Settlement Gage, Tommy C. Hopkins, Robert C. Deen

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

A description is given of a remote sensing, multiple-point, mercury-filled settlement gage designed for measuring in-place settlements. The gage consists of settlement units positioned at locations where settlement measurements are desired and a monitoring unit located outside of construction limits. Settlement readings are observed on a mercury manometer located at the monitoring site and are· equal to the differences in initial and subsequent pressure head readings. Comparisons of measurements obtained at a highway construction site from mercury gage settlement units and conventional settlement platforms are presented and show very good agreement. With the mercury gage, a large amount of settlement …

Impact Of A Proposed Reservoir On Local Land Values, Philip Drucker, Charles R. Smith, Allen C. Turner Jul 1972

Impact Of A Proposed Reservoir On Local Land Values, Philip Drucker, Charles R. Smith, Allen C. Turner

KWRRI Research Reports

This project was designed to study the impact of private preconstruction land acquisition in a Central Kentucky area in which a flood-control dam and reservoir impoundment is planned. The research design was built around use of anthropological concepts and research techniques. By these means it was possible to analyze the perceived values of land to traditionalist residents, among which social and economic security concepts are paramount. Recent land purchases, locally believed to have been made chiefly by "outsiders," (urbanites from nearby Louisville), at prices out of line in terms of local agricultural worth, has been extremely unsettling contributing to the …

High-Intensity Reflective Materials For Signs, Rolands L. Rizenbergs Jun 1972

High-Intensity Reflective Materials For Signs, Rolands L. Rizenbergs

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The intuitive need for improved sign legibility has increased through the years as traffic volumes, speeds and roadway designs have advanced. Because of increased traffic volumes, low-beam headlight illumination at night has become more imperative. Signs are being located farther from the travelled lanes; higher speeds are requiring messages to be more legible at greater distances (for driver decision and response). Recent studies have indicated that even Engineering Grade (2200 and 3200 Series) Scotchlite or materials designated as Type I, Class A in S.P. No. 89-A, may be inadequate for some signing situations. Signs may be made larger and(or) incorporate …
