Credibility And Character: A Different Look At An Interminable Problem, Robert G. Lawson Jun 1975

Credibility And Character: A Different Look At An Interminable Problem, Robert G. Lawson

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

The problems of character evidence "resolved" by the new Federal Rules are problems that involve the structure of human personality. The judgmental processing by jurors of character information involves a behavioral transaction called interpersonal perception. Each of these psychological problems has been intensively investigated for nearly 40 years. As the character problems of the law now take on the appearance of having been solved, there is not the slightest indication that the results of this scientific endeavor influenced the choices made by the law. The solutions to these problems composed by the Judicial Conference and embraced by the Supreme Court …

Engineering Data System For Bedrock Occurrences And Properties, D. J. Hagerty, Robert C. Deen, M. W. Palmer, C. D. Tockstein Mar 1975

Engineering Data System For Bedrock Occurrences And Properties, D. J. Hagerty, Robert C. Deen, M. W. Palmer, C. D. Tockstein

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The initial work plan included the development of a classification system based on index tests. An investigation of previous works in classification of rock on the basis of index tests showed that a variety of classification systems utilizing many different index tests had been developed. However, this survey showed that no generally applicable system had been developed and that little communication had been established between field investigators, facility designers, and those in charge of construction and maintenance of facilities. Therefore, the initial plan for work was modified to include the development of a comprehensive methodology for evaluation of rock. The …

Data Acquisition And Management For Rock Evaluation, M. W. Palmer Feb 1975

Data Acquisition And Management For Rock Evaluation, M. W. Palmer

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The primary goal of this thesis was the formulation of an integrated effort to collect, maintain, exchange, and evaluate engineering data on rock materials from a variety of information sources. The proposed rock evaluation program provides a data base of accumulated information by establishing procedures for characterizing rock, from specimen acquisition through indexing, classification and correlation studies of data, and the application of data for site selection, use tables, establishment of design parameters and alternatives, and maintenance of engineered facilities. The co-ordinated evaluation system detailed herein provides guidelines for implementation of an extensive system of data storage and retrieval to …

Kentucky Law Survey: Civil Procedure, William H. Fortune Jan 1975

Kentucky Law Survey: Civil Procedure, William H. Fortune

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

This article provides a survey of civil procedure developments in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. The most significant civil procedure case decided by the Kentucky Court of Appeals during the period covered by this Survey is Nazareth Literary and Benevolent Institution v. Stephenson. That case, which deals with discovery of privileged communications, may have created problems that will require legislative action. Other decisions by the Court during this period serve to illustrate and amplify existing procedural points. The more important of these decisions will be briefly discussed prior to the consideration of Stephenson.

Displacement Of Persons By Major Public Works: Anthropological Analysis Of Social And Cultural Benefits And Costs From Stream Control Measures--Phase 5, Philip Drucker, Charles Robert Smith, Edward B. Reeves

KWRRI Research Reports

This study is concerned with social change and social impact of a major public works project on the human population required to relocate the persons being forced to sell to the Federal Government or turn over through condemnation proceedings homes, farms, and/or businesses to facilitate completion of a Federally authorized stream control measure. It is intended to test the utility of anthropological method and concept in evaluating and explicating sociocultural impact, and in addition to check hypotheses concerning importance of impact on social and economic areas of culture of the persons to be displaced, on their emigration patterns, and their …

Rock Evaluation For Engineered Facilities, D. J. Hagerty, Robert C. Deen, M. W. Palmer, C. D. Tockstein

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The need for comprehensive information on the characteristics and behavior of earth materials has been recognized for many years, perhaps for as long as significant construction has taken place in and on the surface of the earth. In recent years, however, the magnitude and complexity of engineered construction has greatly increased, resulting in a corresponding increase in the need for information on the engineering properties of soil and rock materials, Direct testing of soil and rock can be utilized to furnish necessary information. However, both field and laboratory testing can be extremely expensive, particularly where testing must include applications of …

A Rock Classification Schema, Robert C. Deen, C. D. Tockstein, M. W. Palmer Sep 1974

A Rock Classification Schema, Robert C. Deen, C. D. Tockstein, M. W. Palmer

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The need for engineering data on earth materials for use in site selection, design, construction, and maintenance of major engineering structures is generally accepted. Probably the most pressing need is for such data to use in preliminary considerations of site selection and design alternatives. Maps and(or) surveys giving the areal distribution of earth materials and their characteristics, together with topographic maps available for many areas, would permit much preliminary work on engineering structures to be done without the engineer ever having to leave his office.
