Domestication Of The Annual Legume Trigonella Balansae For Mixed Farming Systems In Southern Australia, M. G. Wilmot, H. C. Norman, J. K. Hendry, P. Young, Elizabeth L. Hulm, A. Toovey, R. J. Harrison
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
An accession of the annual legume Trigonella balansae Boiss. and Reuter. has been selected for commercial release in Australia. The annual legume has significant potential as a self-regenerating pasture within mixed farming systems. As part of a duty-of-care assessment, we tested the hypothesis that sheep grazing the trigonella cultivar will have similar liveweight, condition scores, health and wool production to sheep grazing two widely adopted annual legumes, subterranean clover (Trifolium subterraneum L. cv Dalkeith) and French serradella (Ornithopus sativus Brot. cv. Erica). Forage dry matter digestibility (DMD), crude protein (CP), fibre, mineral content and isoflavones were measured across …

Pasture Production And Grazing System In Assist Project: Outcome And Replication Viability In Nigeria For Sustainable Ruminant Production, Okanlade A. Lawal-Adebowale, M. Jordana Rivero, John Hunt, Sarah Morgan, Hannah Fleming, R. Pywell, Jonathan Storkey
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
As important as pasture is to productive management of cattle, sheep and goats, intensive development of grassland for ruminant animals is rare in Nigeria largely due to no conscious effort at pasture cultivation in the country. Consequently, nomadic and free grazing systems remain a practice in the country, with resultant poor animal productivity and agro-related conflicts between ruminant keepers and crop farmers and/or agro-processors. The need to revert this situation underscored the exploration of the potential value of the innovative pasture production and grazing management system tested under the Achieving Sustainable Agricultural Systems (ASSIST) programmme in Rothamsted Research, United Kingdom, …

The Influence Of High Density Grazing And Conventional, Rotational Grazing On Soil And Vegetation Parameters In The Semi-Arid And Mesic Grasslands Of South Africa, Jamie Paulse, C. Visser, P. J. Malan, G. N. Smit, F. H. De Witt
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
In South Africa, multi-camp rotational grazing using ‘conservative stocking rates’ have been the conventional approach to livestock grazing management systems. However, as of late, the high-desnity approach (used interchangeably – depending on the situation – with regenerative grazing, mob grazing, short duration, high pressure grazing, rapid rotation, time controlled, ultra-high density, holistic grazing and holistic resource management) has been adopted by numerous farmers. This approach is considered to be an adaptable one, incorporating the ‘herd effect’ concept, whereby large numbers of animals occupy an area for short periods of time, and allowed an extended rest period. It claims to improve …
Horse Owner Preferences For Equine Veterinary Services, Olivia Gibson
Horse Owner Preferences For Equine Veterinary Services, Olivia Gibson
Theses and Dissertations--Agricultural Economics
The decline in the number of equine veterinarians creates significant challenges for the future of equine veterinary medicine. One crucial aspect of this issue is how the financial health of equine veterinary practices might be improved. Examining how horse owners respond to changes in the prices of veterinary services allows practices to determine whether adjusting prices can improve practices’ financial standing. Using an online stated preference survey completed by 4,992 horse owners in the U.S., this study investigates horse owner preferences for equine veterinary services. First, horse owners’ utilization of equine veterinary services and willingness to adapt to the changes …

Neuroimmune Response And Neurodegeneration In Adolescent Rats Following Binge Alcohol Exposure, Catherine Van Doorn
Neuroimmune Response And Neurodegeneration In Adolescent Rats Following Binge Alcohol Exposure, Catherine Van Doorn
Theses and Dissertations--Pharmacy
Studies of adolescent drinking show a distinct prevalence of binge drinking, including at extreme levels, and this type of drinking has been identified as increasing risk of developing an Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD). Additionally, females suffer greater levels of harm from binge drinking and AUD and in an abbreviated timeline compared to males. Neuroimmune reactivity, specifically with microglial reactivity following binge drinking, may influence the sex differences seen in negative alcohol-related health disparities.
The first set of experiments sought to examine a marker of microglial reactivity, TSPO, in adolescent females and males and found the sexes displayed different temporal and …

An Exploratory Analysis Of Fatal Vehicle Crashes In Urban And Rural Kansas In Relation To Identified Golder Hour Gaps In Hospital Coverage, Mason W. Lipford, Grace N. Whisler Lipford, Gregory L. Newmark, Eric J. Fitzsimmons
Kentucky Transportation Center Presentations
The state of Kansas is a relatively rural state with a majority of highway/interstate miles through farmland and low populated areas. These rural areas can be hot spots for crashes to occur and the lack of hospitals and emergency response nearby can make these types of crashes turn deadly. Few studies have been done on this topic especially for the state of Kansas. As the Department of Transportation is pushing to the “Drive to Zero” goal, pinpointing the harmful factors to indicate where improvements are needed to reduce the number, and severity of crashes is an important first step. Using …
The Critical Role Of Nac1 In Triple-Negative Breast Cancer Stemness And Immunosuppression, Chrispus Ngule
The Critical Role Of Nac1 In Triple-Negative Breast Cancer Stemness And Immunosuppression, Chrispus Ngule
Theses and Dissertations--Toxicology and Cancer Biology
Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is a highly heterogeneous and the most lethal breast cancer (BC) subtype. We report here a new role of nucleus accumbens associated protein 1 (NAC1) in maintaining stemness signature and features of TNBC and controlling the status of myeloid-derived suppressor cells, which accounts for its role in tumor progression and metastasis. This report demonstrates increased NAC1 amplification in TNBC metastatic samples compared to nonmetastatic tissues. In vitro, NAC1 depletion in TNBC cells suppressed their proliferation, colony formation, migration, and invasion. In vivo, NAC1 knockdown in TNBC cells reduced tumorigenic ability, diminished tumor growth rate, and abolished …

Glioblastoma (GBM) presents a significant public health challenge as the deadliest and most common malignant brain tumor in adults. Despite standard-of-care treatment, which includes surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy, mortality rates are high, underscoring the critical need for advancing GBM therapy. Over the past two decades, numerous clinical trials have been performed, yet only a small fraction demonstrated a benefit, raising concerns about the predictability of current preclinical models. Traditionally, preclinical studies utilize treatment-naïve tumors, failing to model the clinical scenario where patients undergo standard-of-care treatment prior to recurrence. Recurrent GBM generally exhibits distinct molecular alterations influenced by treatment selection pressures. …

The kappa opioid receptor has been identified as a promising therapeutic target for promoting remyelination. In the current study, we evaluated the ability of nalfurafine to promote oligodendrocyte progenitor cell (OPC) differentiation and myelination in vitro, and its efficacy in an extended, cuprizone-induced demyelination model. Primary mouse (C57BL/6J) OPC-containing cultures were treated with nalfurafine (0.6–200 nM), clemastine (0.01–100 μM), T3 (30 ng/mL), or vehicle for 5 days. Using immunocytochemistry and confocal microscopy, we found that nalfurafine treatment increased OPC differentiation, oligodendrocyte (OL) morphological complexity, and myelination of nanofibers in vitro. Adult male mice (C57BL/6J) were given a diet con- taining …

Two important factors that contribute to resistance to immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) are an immune-suppressive microenvironment and limited antigen presentation by tumor cells. In this study, we examine whether in- hibition of the methyltransferase enhancer of zeste homolog 2 (EZH2) can increase ICI response in lung squamous cell carcinomas (LSCC). Our in vitro experiments using two-dimensional human cancer cell lines as well as three-dimensional murine and patient-derived organoids treated with two inhibitors of the EZH2 plus IFNγ showed that EZH2 inhibition leads to expression of both MHC class I and II (MHCI/II) expression at both the mRNA and protein levels. …

This review categorizes the diverse applications of these data and …
Synthesis, Characterization, And Performance Assessment Of Reusable And Biodegradable Antimicrobial Polymeric Membranes For Aerosolized Pathogen Inactivation And Filtration, Ebuka Ogbuoji
Theses and Dissertations--Chemical and Materials Engineering
Air filtration technology has proven effective in purifying air by trapping particulates which can cause adverse health effects. High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filters, capable of capturing over 99.99% of PM0.3, are recommended for critical applications. However, conventional non-woven HEPA filters rely on electrostatic interactions to trap smaller particles, which can deplete over time or after cleaning, reducing filtration efficiency and posing health risks. Additionally, these filters contribute to plastic waste.
This dissertation investigated the feasibility of using flat sheet polymeric membranes fabricated via nonsolvent-induced phase separation (NIPS) as reusable and biodegradable alternatives to commercially available non-biodegradable air …

Theses and Dissertations--Pharmacology and Nutritional Sciences
Opioid use disorder (OUD), one of the greatest public health threats in the US, requires urgent attention. In 2022, the CDC reported 107,941 overdose deaths, over 70% attributed to synthetic opioids such as fentanyl (FEN). An alarming increase in opioid use disorder (OUD) diagnoses in pregnant people resulted in a 5-fold rise in cases of neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome (NOWS). This condition elicits sympathetic overactivity, neural hyperexcitability, and a stress reaction characterized by tachycardia and hypertension. Whether prenatal exposure to fentanyl induces cardiovascular dysfunction in the offspring remains undetermined, impeding the timely development of strategies to mitigate OUD-related health risks …

Mitochondrial function analysis is a well-established method used in preclinical and clinical investigations to assess pathophysiological changes in various disease states, including traumatic brain injury (TBI). Although there are multiple approaches to assess mitochondrial function, one common method involves respirometric assays utilizing either Clark-type oxygen electrodes or fluorescent-based Seahorse analysis (Agilent). However, these functional analysis methods are typically limited to the availability of freshly isolated tissue samples due to the compromise of the electron transport chain (ETC) upon storage, caused by freeze-thaw-mediated breakdown of mitochondrial membranes. In this study, we propose and refine a method for evaluating electron flux through …

"And I / Am The Arrow": The Narrative, Personae Construction, And Language Ideology Of Confessional Poets' Identity Performance, Madison Fuchs
Theses and Dissertations--Linguistics
This thesis argues for consideration of linguistic features in service of raising the postmodern confessionalist poet identity as an utterance and an act of loyalty to performance. The embodiment of the confessionalist identity, attributed to the features used to adhere to the confessional mode, is realized through the invention of confessional personae. These confessional personae merge the responsibilities of the speaker and the narrator to convey a pseudo-autobiographical utterance to a designated audience. In this thesis, I analyze a sequence of poems that either possess taboo subjects or utilize linguistic functions, like indexicality and audience design, that mark its mode. …
Quantitative Sustainable Design Of Urban Tree Soil Cells For Stormwater Management, Jamaya Wilson
Quantitative Sustainable Design Of Urban Tree Soil Cells For Stormwater Management, Jamaya Wilson
Theses and Dissertations--Civil Engineering
Urban trees are critical assets to cities around the world. They act as a green infrastructure system to provide various environmental, economic and social benefits to their surrounding environments. However, the quality of life of urban trees is severely threatened by uncontrolled urbanization and climate change. The compaction of urban soils to meet the structural stability requirements for buildings and pavements directly restricts tree growth. Soil cells are green infrastructure placed in tree wells to transfer active and static loads to pavements. This allows for reduced soil compaction and increased tree root expansion. However, because the technology is still in …

Revolutionizing Our Understanding Of Specific Platelet-Pathogen Interactions, Hammodah Rawhi Hammodah Alfar
Theses and Dissertations--Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry
Aside from their classical role in maintaining hemostasis, platelets are considered first-line vascular guardians that influence both the innate and adaptive immune systems. This is mediated by either direct interactions with immune cells or through the release of pre-stored cytokines and chemokines upon interacting with pathogens such as viruses. While this establishes platelets as potential players in the response to pathogens, it remains unclear what platelets can do with pathogens and how important that is to immune responses, especially against viruses. Most systemic viremias, such as HIV-1, present with mild thrombocytopenia, which is mediated through several mechanisms such as a …

Turfgrasses under intensive management are often subject to outbreaks of infectious diseases. Diseases usually are most damaging when weather or cultural conditions favor the disease-causing agent but not plant growth and vigor. Cultural conditions that predispose turfgrass to diseases include close mowing, inadequate or excessive fertility, light or frequent irrigation, excessive thatch, poor drainage, and shade. Good turf management practices often greatly reduce the impact of disease by promoting healthy plants that are better able to resist infections. Even under good management, however, diseases sometimes cause excessive damage to highly managed turfgrasses. The proper use of fungicides in these instances, …
