Role Of Clover "Down On The Farm", Don Sorrell
Role Of Clover "Down On The Farm", Don Sorrell
Forage Symposium at the Kentucky Cattlemen’s Convention
In an effort to evaluate the Role of Clover ”Down on the Farm”, a survey was developed and then e-mailed to Agriculture and Natural Resources Extension Agents in Kentucky. Agents were asked to complete the survey based on their estimate of use and importance of clover in their particular county. Thirtytwo (32) surveys were returned. The following is a summary of those returned surveys.

Establishing Clovers In Pasture And Hay Fields, Garry D. Lacefield
Forage Symposium at the Kentucky Cattlemen’s Convention
Pasture renovation means to renew and improve. In Kentucky, this usually means adding lime and fertilizer, controlling weeds and insects and planting a legume such as red clover and/or white clover. The primary benefits come as a result of getting legumes established in grass-dominated fields.
Estimating Clover Percentage In Your Pasture, S. Ray Smith
Estimating Clover Percentage In Your Pasture, S. Ray Smith
Forage Symposium at the Kentucky Cattlemen’s Convention
You often hear Extension Agents and Extension Specialists talk about how important it is to add clover to your grass pastures. We talk about the advantage of free nitrogen, the added forage quality and yield, the benefit of diluting the toxic effects of tall fescue, and many other benefits. Usually after I give a presentation promoting all the benefits of clover the first question from the audience is, “How much clover do I need?” My standard answer is that 30 to 40% clover provides many of these benefits without compromising grass productivity. In fact, 30 to 40% clover in a …

Why Grow Clovers?, Don Ball, Garry D. Lacefield
Forage Symposium at the Kentucky Cattlemen’s Convention
Clovers have long been viewed as being special and beneficial pasture plants, but recently the incentives livestock producers have to grow them have further increased. Why are many people more interested than ever in growing clovers in pastures as companion species with grasses? Here are several reasons that collectively make a compelling case.

A method and design is provided for distributing and storing sets of temporally ordered information in a systematic and sequential fashion. This method is based on a model of how the brain functions in the distribution and storage of temporally ordered memories, but it can also be applied to the design of new biological, electronic or optical devices. These devices may be used in the testing and development of new therapeutic drugs, in the detection of toxic agents or impaired performance, or in the development of new industrial and consumer devices in which the orderly storage of sequential information is …

Status Of Credit For Prior Learning (Cpl) At The University Of Kentucky For 2008 & 2009 Official Cohorts, Randolph Hollingsworth
Undergraduate Education White Papers
This paper explores the college readiness levels of University of Kentucky's incoming first-year students, especially in preparation for success in UK's STEM majors. Attention is paid to the statewide standards using ACT sub-scores in English, Reading and Mathematics, as well as the students’ scores from nationally recognized assessments (e.g., Advanced Placement scores). Evidence regarding a significant number of our entering cohorts for 2008 and 2009 (first time first-year, full-time, degree-seeking) who bring in credit for prior learning (CPL) is examined, and the paper discusses briefly how CPL affects their placement in their fall semester courses.
The Role Of Cuticle, Fatty Acids, And Lipid Signaling In Plant Defense, Ye Xia
The Role Of Cuticle, Fatty Acids, And Lipid Signaling In Plant Defense, Ye Xia
Theses and Dissertations--Plant Pathology
Systemic acquired resistance (SAR) is initiated upon recognition of specific microbial effectors by cognate plant resistance proteins and immunizes distal tissues of plants against secondary infections. SAR involves the generation of a mobile signal at the site of primary infection, which then translocates to and activates defense responses in the distal tissues via some unknown mechanism(s). This study shows that an ACYL CARRIER PROTEIN 4 (ACP4), GLABRA1 (GL1) and ACYL CARRIER BINDING PROTEINS (ACBP) are required for the processing of the mobile SAR signal in distal tissues of Arabidopsis. Although acp4, gl1 and acbp plants generate the mobile signal, …

In developing individual farm mastitis control and treatment strategies, it is often necessary to characterize the types of bacteria that are present on your farm. To answer this question, a microbiological analysis, or milk culture, must be performed on milk samples collected from cows showing clinical or subclinical signs of mastitis. Results of the milk cultures will help identify which bacteria are causing the mastitis. In turn, this information can be used to alter mastitis control, prevention, and treatment options to fit your herd’s conditions.
During an investigation of a herd dealing with high somatic cell counts or a high …

Paradigmatic Realignment And Morphological Change: Diachronic Deponency In Network Morphology, Andrew R. Hippisley
Linguistics Faculty Publications
A natural way of formally modeling language change is to adopt a procedural, dynamic approach that gets at the notion of emergence and decay. We argue that in the realm of morphological change, and notably the reorganization of a lexeme’s paradigm, a model that at a given synchronic stage holds together both the actual facts about the paradigm as well as the range of potential or virtual facts that are licensed by the morphological machinery more elegantly captures the nature of the changing paradigm. We consider the special case of morphological mismatch where syntactic function is misaligned with morphological expression, …

Actions Of Ncx, Pmca And Serca On Short-Term Facilitation And Maintenance Of Transmission In Nerve Terminals, Mohati Desai-Shah, Robin L. Cooper
Actions Of Ncx, Pmca And Serca On Short-Term Facilitation And Maintenance Of Transmission In Nerve Terminals, Mohati Desai-Shah, Robin L. Cooper
Biology Faculty Publications
Residual Ca2+ can accumulate in the nerve terminal during repetitive stimulation; thus, the basis for short-term facilitation (STF). The plasmalemmal Na+/Ca2+ exchanger [NCX], the Ca2+-ATPase (PMCA) and the sarcoplasmic/endoplasmic reticulum Ca2+-ATPase (SERCA) on the endoplasmic reticulum are three important Ca2+ regulatory processes in controlling [Ca2+]i. The role of these [Ca2+]i regulators in the development and maintenance of STF was addressed at the neuromuscular junction. When the NCX is compromised by reduced [Na+]o, the EPSP amplitudes decrease, but with KB-R7943 (a reverse blocker of NCX) …

Biology Faculty Publications
We investigated the roles of three regulatory proteins that impact [Ca2+]i within cardiac myocytes of Drosophila melanogaster. The NCX (Na+/Ca2+ exchanger), PMCA (plasma membrane Ca2+-ATPase) and SERCA (sarcoplasmic/endoplasmic reticulum Ca2+-ATPase) were compromised by ionic, pharmacological, mutationalmanipulation, and with a combination of approaches, while heart rate (HR) was monitored. A decrease in SERCA function reduced HR more for intact larva in comparison to a dissected larva. Dissected preparations were used to expose the heart directly to agents. A compromised PMCA also reduced HR; however, attenuated NCX function by low [Na+ …
Passive Attitude Stabilization For Small Satellites, Samir Ahmed Rawashdeh
Passive Attitude Stabilization For Small Satellites, Samir Ahmed Rawashdeh
University of Kentucky Master's Theses
This thesis addresses the problem of designing and evaluating passive satellite attitude control systems for small satellites. Passive stabilization techniques such as Gravity Gradient stabilization, Passive Magnetic Stabilization, and Aerodynamic stabilization in Low Earth Orbit utilize the geometric and magnetic design of a satellite and the orbit properties to passively provide attitude stabilization and basic pointing. The design of such stabilization systems can be done using a high fidelity simulation of the satellite and the environmental effects in the orbit under consideration to study the on-orbit behavior and the effectiveness of the stability system in overcoming the disturbance torques. The …
