What We Talk About When We Talk About Quality: A Librarian And Instructor Compare How They Assess Students' Sources, Elizabeth Pickard, Sarah Sterling Jun 2020

What We Talk About When We Talk About Quality: A Librarian And Instructor Compare How They Assess Students' Sources, Elizabeth Pickard, Sarah Sterling

Collaborative Librarianship

This case study explores and compares how a librarian and an instructor evaluated the quality of bibliographies students produced for the instructor’s class. The ethnographic study attempted to unearth nuances in the respective practical approaches librarian and instructor took to assess a source’s quality as well as differences in what librarian and instructor might mean by “quality.” Themes emerged as indicators of quality that librarian and instructor applied differently in terms of frequency and weight. Findings also included that librarian and instructor looked to different aspects of citations to demonstrate common values, such as thoroughness, and to reflect the quality …

Context Is Key: Library And Archive Collaboration For Digital Projects, Joy M. Perrin, Robert G. Weaver

Collaborative Librarianship

Libraries and archives have different underlying philosophies towards items, metadata, goals, and core processes in their respective fields. With the proliferation of digital libraries and digitization efforts, both kinds of organizations can benefit from working together for the benefit of patrons and researchers. Presented in this article is a case study of a collaboration between the Texas Tech University Libraries Digital Resources Unit (DRU) and the Southwest Collection/Special Collections Library (SWC), an archive of cultural heritage materials.

Setting Priorities Fairly In Response To Covid-19: Identifying Overlapping Consensus And Reasonable Disagreement, David Wasserman, Govind C. Persad, Joseph Millum Jun 2020

Setting Priorities Fairly In Response To Covid-19: Identifying Overlapping Consensus And Reasonable Disagreement, David Wasserman, Govind C. Persad, Joseph Millum

Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship

Proposals for allocating scarce lifesaving resources in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic have aligned in some ways and conflicted in others. This paper attempts a kind of priority setting in addressing these conflicts. In the first part, we identify points on which we do not believe that reasonable people should differ—even if they do. These are (i) the inadequacy of traditional clinical ethics to address priority-setting in a pandemic; (ii) the relevance of saving lives; (iii) the flaws of first-come, first-served allocation; (iv) the relevance of post-episode survival; (v) the difference between age and other factors that affect life-expectancy; …

Examining The Roles Of The Conserved Mrna Deadenylase Complex On Drosophila Neuronal Structures, Megan Mccaughey, Scott Barbee

DU Undergraduate Research Journal Archive

The most common cause of inherited mental deficiency and monogenetic cause of autism is Fragile X Syndrome (FXS). There is little known about the origins of this disease which will be investigated in the present study. The series of experiments conducted examined the potential role of mRNA deadenylation proteins as contributing factors to the pathogenesis of FXS using Drosophila melanogaster as a model organism. One of the main complexes involved in deadenylation is the CNOT complex, which is comprised of many proteins, including POP2, TWIN, and NOT3. Each protein plays a unique role within the CNOT complex. This goal of …

Islamic Revivalism And Democracy In Malaysia, Ashton Word, Ahmed Abd Rabou Apr 2020

Islamic Revivalism And Democracy In Malaysia, Ashton Word, Ahmed Abd Rabou

DU Undergraduate Research Journal Archive

The paper examines democracy and secularism in Malaysia, a state rooted in Islam, and how it has been implemented in a country with a majority Muslim population. It briefly outlines how Islam was brought to the region and how British colonialism was able to implement secularism and democratic practices in such a way that religion was not wholeheartedly erased. Indeed, peaceful decolonization combined with a history of accommodating elites served to promote a newly independent Malaysia, to create a constitutional democracy which declares Islam as the religion of the Federation, and simultaneously religious freedom. Despite the constitution, the United Malays …

The Cycle Of Failing Reform: How Mentally Ill Detainees Continue To Suffer Unconstitutional Wait Times In Colorado, Grace Gonzalez, Michael Campbell Apr 2020

The Cycle Of Failing Reform: How Mentally Ill Detainees Continue To Suffer Unconstitutional Wait Times In Colorado, Grace Gonzalez, Michael Campbell

DU Undergraduate Research Journal Archive

This research examines the state of Colorado’s failing criminal justice system, particularly as it pertains to mentally ill detainees. For several years, mentally ill detainees in Colorado have been forced to wait for extensive amounts of time to receive court-ordered evaluations to determine mental competency before trial. The state’s continued failure to administer these evaluations in a timely manner has led to a series of complaints and lawsuits against the state. Unfortunately, these lawsuits have ultimately done little to create lasting reform. The state has managed to temporarily mitigate the problem as complaints of unconstitutional wait times arise, but it …

Lessons From Regulating E-Cigarettes: A Case Of Coercive Paternalism, Nudging, Or Behaviorally Informed Boosting?, Zahra Takhshid Apr 2020

Lessons From Regulating E-Cigarettes: A Case Of Coercive Paternalism, Nudging, Or Behaviorally Informed Boosting?, Zahra Takhshid

Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship

After reports of alarming number of teen vaping and deaths associating with e-cigarettes, many countries around the world began imposing complete or partial ban on the sale of e-cigarettes. Notwithstanding, conflicting research claims the health risks of e-cigarettes are less than a tobacco-based cigarette (traditional cigarettes). This has caused uncertainty in a uniform approach towards regulating the use and the sale of e-cigarettes. This article argues that based on findings of behavioral economics, when there is not a widespread social norm shaped by the use of e-cigarettes, coercive paternalism is the best way to eliminate the unwanted health risks associated …

"Founding Its Empire On Spells Of Pleasure": Brunonian Excitability, The Invigorated English Opium-Eater, And De Quincey's "China Question", Menglu Gao Apr 2020

"Founding Its Empire On Spells Of Pleasure": Brunonian Excitability, The Invigorated English Opium-Eater, And De Quincey's "China Question", Menglu Gao

English and Literary Arts: Faculty Scholarship

What light can De Quincey's Confessions of an English Opium-Eater (1821) shed on its author's later advocacy of the First Opium War? To what degree did De Quincey's and other contemporaneous accounts of opium use in Britain influence metaphorical connections between bodily energy and national power in the 1830s and 1840s? Placing Confessions alongside John Brown's 1780 treatise, Elements of Medicine, this essay argues that De Quincey "nationalized" opium-eating by transforming mental exceptionality in British Romanticism into a medical body's connection with internal energies and external stimuli from China and "the Orient." The essay concludes that opium serves in …

Pardoning Dogs, Sarah Schindler Mar 2020

Pardoning Dogs, Sarah Schindler

Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship

In 1994, the Governor of New Jersey pardoned a dog. In 2017, the Governor of Maine did the same. Each of these dogs had been ordered to be euthanized after killing another dog. While the Governor of New Jersey relied on the property status of the dog in issuing her order, the Governor of Maine relied on his standard pardon power, despite the fact that the being to be pardoned was a dog rather than a human. Both of these cases generated a great deal of popular press and attention, and a few months ago, a New York state senator …

Volatility Transmission Among Nigeria, Some Selected African And World Equity Markets, Idolor Eseoghene Joseph Ph.D. Jan 2020

Volatility Transmission Among Nigeria, Some Selected African And World Equity Markets, Idolor Eseoghene Joseph Ph.D.

International Review of Business and Economics

I examine the extent of volatility transmission, spill-over and contagion among Nigeria, some selected African and world equity markets. Empirical findings indicate the presence of volatility transmission and spill-over among the Nigerian and world equity markets. However, for the Nigerian and African markets, the results show that there is volatility transmission, but no evidence of volatility spill-over. The results were not statistically significant enough to prove the existence of volatility contagion among all the African markets, arising from the recent global financial crisis.

Improve Yield And Quality Of Senile Orchard With Rejuvenation And Nutrient Management, Kiran S. Jotava Jan 2020

Improve Yield And Quality Of Senile Orchard With Rejuvenation And Nutrient Management, Kiran S. Jotava

International Review of Business and Economics

Day by day newer technologies are under implementation and become popular among the orchardists. Decades ago orchard establishment was made by varying spacing and different source of planting materials of either sexual or asexual methods. Due tothedifferenceinsourceofplanting material and short of application of nutrient of orchards leads to the senile or less productive. Poor management practices also brings orchards to the uneconomical zone. Overcrowding and encroachment of trees resulted in competition for nutrient absorption congestion, poor light penetration and act as good shelter house for insect- pests and disease attacks are obvious problems with older orchards, if trees are not …

Movement And Countermovement Dynamics Between The Religious Right And Lgb Community Arising From Colorado’S Amendment 2, Lauren L. Yehle, Joshua C. Wilson, Nancy D. Wadsworth, Susan Schulten Jan 2020

Movement And Countermovement Dynamics Between The Religious Right And Lgb Community Arising From Colorado’S Amendment 2, Lauren L. Yehle, Joshua C. Wilson, Nancy D. Wadsworth, Susan Schulten

DU Undergraduate Research Journal Archive

This sample of the case study of Equality Colorado will demonstrate how counter movements and litigation may limit and change how an organization surrounding a social movement acts. Colorado for Family Values helped pass Colorado’s Amendment 2 in 1992, which limited any present and future anti-discrimination legislation that would protect sexuality as a class. This ballot initiative passed by 53% of Colorado voters, and other states like Idaho and Oregon attempted to replicate this type of initiative. Amendment 2 challenged the LGB community and compelled the movement to collectively respond to the religious right with coalitions, pooled resources, and litigation. …
