Field Report: Communicating The Uottawa Library Collection Rightsizing Effort, Mackenzie Kathmann

This field report examines the development and evaluation of a communications strategy for an academic university library’s multi-year Collection Rightsizing Effort. Recognizing that weeding projects often provoke stakeholder concerns around transparency and consultation, the project team adopted best practices from the Weeding Communications in the Collections Lifecycle Project Communications Matrix framework, developed by a subgroup of the joint Rosemont/ Partnership Communications and Advocacy Working Group, to guide and assess communication practices. The report outlines the creation, evaluation and improvements made to a comprehensive communications strategy. A persistent challenge on college campuses is effectively connecting students with the wide array of university resources available to them. At the University of Florida, an opportunity to address this challenge emerged when the Florida Museum of Natural History (FLMNH), a major campus institution with extensive scientific collections, was scheduled for a 15-month closure due to renovations. In response, librarians at the Marston Science Library initiated a collaborative partnership with FLMNH, offering the library as a venue for science-related events and programming. This collaboration enhanced student engagement, added a non-traditional venue for science learning and interaction, and proved mutually beneficial …

The Texas Tech University (TTU) Digital Scholarship Lab (DSL) often collaborates on digitization projects with the Southwest Collection (SWC) archives. Within the past three years the DSL has branched out to new sources of projects, including university research institutions, other colleges and departments, and Lubbock community entities. At times, these partnerships became entangled with the SWC’s collecting goals, resulting in the need for expanded and more effective communication about integrated project management. King Of The Jungle: Comparative Analysis Of The Geopolitical Narratives Surrounding Fordlandia And A Proposed Resort Park In El Mirador, Rachel Jaeger

Environmental geopolitics is a field of study in which narratives about the environment are analyzed to reveal the underlying motivations and objectives they support. Using Shannon O’Lear’s (2020) framework of environmental geopolitics, I conduct a comparative analysis of the narratives surrounding two distinct development projects: Henry Ford’s historical company town in the Brazilian Amazon, Fordlandia, and a proposed ecotourism resort park in El Mirador, Guatemala. Analysis of Fordlandia reveals a narrative of American frontierism and a man-versus-nature perspective that served to paint the environment as belligerent and thereby justify corporate control and Indigenous assimilation. Do The Justifications For Regulating Indecent Sexual Content On Broadcast Television Remain Valid Today?, Joel Timmer

For over fifty years, the federal government has restricted indecent content on broadcast television, to prevent children from being exposed to it. One of the primary justifications for regulating broadcast indecency is the ease with which children could access broadcast content. The justifications for regulating indecency, however, do not apply to cable or streaming television, and as a result, neither do the regulations. However, the television marketplace has radically changed since the U.S. Supreme Court first upheld the authority of the government to regulate broadcast indecency in 1970. Most significantly, parents today can use the V-Chip to limit the broadcast …

Student-Athlete “Cyberbullying” And Its Absence Of Legal Recourse, Ethan Lamb

The NCAA’s ongoing “Draw the Line” campaign raises awareness to end online abuse related to sports betting, racism, sexism, and other categories which student-athletes increasingly face. However, this awareness does not force abusers to stop, nor have student-athletes ever challenged abusers under relevant criminal law for three reasons. First, it is difficult for law enforcement to identify anonymous digital suspects under the Fourth Amendment. Second, “cyberbullying,” “cyberstalking,” and other relevant statutes have limited application towards student-athletes. Third, defendants hold established content-based and overbreadth challenges to those statutes under the First Amendment. As these compounding issues give student-athletes no legal recourse …

L. 219 (2010), surveying recent developments in mainstream films’ depiction of the interrelated narratives of law and race. The government has long involved itself in the world of sports. The Sports Bribery Act, and similar state laws, prohibit the bribery of any athlete, coach, official, or other participant with the intent of manipulating the outcome of a sporting event. Importantly, these laws require prosecutors to convince a jury beyond a shadow of a doubt that an athlete acted with intent, with the specific knowledge or purpose, to influence the outcome of a sporting event. Since the Supreme Court's decision in National Collegiate Athletic Association v. Alston, the movement for college athlete unionization has drastically expanded. As college sports—and their profitability—continue to grow, problems such as the exploitation of athletes of color, gender inequity, and abuse and mistreatment of athletes have signaled the need for restoring decision-making power to the athletes. This can be achieved through collective bargaining, but the complexity of college sports and its many stakeholders makes the route to a college athletes players association far from clear. If your job requires you to passionately embrace your coworker after surviving the seat-riveting climax action of the third act, does that complicate your workplace’s sexual harassment prevention strategy? Most jobs do not require workers to make intentional intimate contact with their coworkers. Yet, in the entertainment industry, some jobs require not just intimate contact with coworkers but selling that contact as authentic. This staged intimacy, like staged violence, carries a risk that simulated conduct can result in real harm.
