South Africa: Biomass Oil Extraction, Adrian Padt
South Africa: Biomass Oil Extraction, Adrian Padt
ETHOS Technical Reports
This past summer, the team travelled to Durban, South Africa to work with Rocket Works and ACON, both owned by Adrian Padt, on developing an essential oil extraction machine. Durban is on the east coast of South Africa lying along the Indian Ocean and home to one of the largest ports in the African continent. Housed in the same building, Rocket Works and ACON essentially act as one unit. The team primarily worked under ACON which focuses on designing air conditioning systems for a variety of automotive companies, such as Toyota. Directly requested by a company in Malawi, the team’s …

India: Overnight Solar Cookers, Shelly Molskow, Kate Harcum
ETHOS Technical Reports
Kate and Shelly travelled to Patna, Bihar in northeast India to work for a non-profit solar energy company, Solar Alternatives and Associated Programmes (SAAP), for 10 weeks. They stayed at a Jesuit compound along with two priests and one brother. Conveniently, the office where they conducted research was located on the first floor of the compound and the workshop was right next door. Their project initially consisted of improving the Solar Thermal Adsorption Refrigerator (STAR) system, however, due to many complications and the need for extended research, the team decided to work on a different project. Since there was an …

During his time there, David Fink was the engineer tasked with constructing a classroom for the influx of new students at Wasambo Boy’s High School. Because all 75 currently enrolled students at …

Performance-Based Funding Of Higher Education: Analyses Of Policy Discourse Across Four Case Studies, Mary Ziskin, Karyn E. Rabourn, Donald Hossler
Educational Leadership Faculty Publications
Performance-based funding (PBF) for public colleges and universities is increasingly prevalent worldwide, as a part of a broader pattern of marketisation in public education. This study focused on developing an empirical view of how, and in what contexts, policy makers use the concepts of neoliberal economics to design and support PerformanceBased Funding (PBF) policies in higher education. We analysed 121 policy documents, white papers, evaluation reports, and news items related to PBF policies in four case jurisdictions: Tennessee, Washington, United Kingdom, and Italy. We employed critical discourse analysis methods as framed by Fairclough and colleagues and implemented this approach within …

Counselor Education and Human Services Faculty Publications
Concussions in college students can lead to a number of academic, physical, and emotional consequences. This project involved training college staff—including residence hall advisors—about the signs, symptoms, and risks related to concussions. The importance of training in concussion recognition and management is discussed in relation to campus staff’s responsibilities. A sample training model that can be replicated on college and university campuses is presented, along with implications for college students and housing personnel.
Of the traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) sustained by 1.7 to 3.8 million people every year, approximately 75% (1.28 to 2.85 million) can be classified as a concussion, …

Review: 'Improvising Improvisation: From Out Of Philosophy, Music, Dance, And Literature', Aili W. Bresnahan
Philosophy Faculty Publications
This book review attempts to interpret the meaning and value of Gary Peters’ book in a way that is true to the kind of book, an experimental improvisation, that it purports to be. As such, it grapples with the difficulties of evaluating the merits of a philosophical discussion within a book that claims not to be philosophy and case studies in performance that beg the question of whether they accurately exemplify the (non-)philosophy they are meant to support. Despite these difficulties, this review ends with the conclusion that this book does, in fact, convey something essential about the nature of …

The Juggler Of Notre Dame And The Medievalizing Of Modernity, Volume 3: The American Middle Ages, Jan M. Ziolkowski
The Juggler Of Notre Dame And The Medievalizing Of Modernity, Volume 3: The American Middle Ages, Jan M. Ziolkowski
Juggling for Mary
This ambitious and vivid study in six volumes explores the journey of a single, electrifying story, from its first incarnation in a medieval French poem through its prolific rebirth in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The Juggler of Notre Dame tells how an entertainer abandons the world to join a monastery, but is suspected of blasphemy after dancing his devotion before a statue of the Madonna in the crypt; he is saved when the statue, delighted by his skill, miraculously comes to life.
Jan Ziolkowski tracks the poem from its medieval roots to its rediscovery in late nineteenth-century Paris, before …

I have found communicating with one's offspring to be daunting at times. When they're small children, conversation can be simple: "Gotta go pee-pee?" or "Time for nap" or "No, don't put the fork in the socket, honey." Simple supervisory skills. As they get older, and if they're still not as smart as you, you can figure out how things are. But it does require knowing your children and what their proclivities are.
