Engaging With Difficult Topics In The Archives: Suicide And Historical Empathy, Kayla Harris
Marian Library Faculty Presentations
The development of historical empathy in students is a desired learning outcome in many history curriculums. Although historical empathy is written about frequently in educational literature, it is not addressed in archival journals. The integration of "historical empathy" into archival pedagogy is rich with opportunities. Three archivists discuss their successful collaborations with educators to develop archival projects that incorporate empathy development in a wide range of academic settings.

"We couldn't ignore their siren song!" my son insisted. My husband sheepishly lowered his head. "You carried these through the mall, in public?!" I was aghast observing the ghostly white, curvy, naked form, absent of any gender identification, complete with attached high-heeled boots. "Two of my students saw us and took pictures," my spouse continued. "They laughed at me," he ended in a whisper.

Five Rivers MetroParks Collaboration Data Archive
This dataset encompasses information following seed germination and seedling growth of three tree species: Quercus rubra, Juglans cinerea, and Carya laciniosa. Seed sizes were recorded prior to incubation in sand, vermiculite, or without media. Seeds were then germinated with time to germination recorded in this dataset. After germination, seedlings were planted in Sugarcreek Metropark in either fall 2011 or spring 2012. One-half of seedlings were planted in tree tubes and a half without. Seedling height and diameter was recorded in June 2014 and March 2019, and death of seedlings was noted.

A Qualitative Inquiry Of Social And Emotional Support For Students With Persistent Concussion Symptoms, Susan C. Davies, Elana R. Bernstein, Corinne M. Daprano
Counselor Education and Human Services Faculty Publications
Students who sustain concussions often struggle with social and emotional symptoms. Such symptoms can interfere with students’ academic performance, relationships, and overall sense of well-being. This qualitative study involved interviews with eight adolescents and young adults who sustained concussions as youths and experienced significant social and emotional symptoms; six of the participants’ parents were also interviewed. Grounded theory methodology was used to code the data, construct categories and identify themes, and develop a theoretical model of students’ post-concussion social and emotional issues and potential sources of support. Categories of issues emerging from the interviews included anxiety/stress, depression/sadness, interpersonal difficulties/isolation, and …

The Marian Library at the University of Dayton is a special library documenting the Blessed Virgin Mary. This poster outlines a hands-on primary source literacy session for the course, Social History of the Later Middle Ages. Students used Books of Hours (Medieval devotional books centered on a series of prayers to the Blessed Virgin Mary) as part of a session that introduced them to special collections resources while tying in with course themes on medieval history. Participants will learn about librarian-faculty partnerships, logistics of using special collections materials in instruction, and active learning strategies and lesson plans using rare and …

An extension of the fusion of interpolated frames superresolution (FIF SR) method to perform SR in the presence of atmospheric optical turbulence is presented. The goal of such processing is to improve the performance of imaging systems impacted by turbulence. We provide an optical transfer function analysis that illustrates regimes where significant degradation from both aliasing and turbulence may be present in imaging systems. This analysis demonstrates the potential need for simultaneous SR and turbulence mitigation (TM). While the FIF SR method was not originally proposed to address this joint restoration problem, we believe it is well suited for this …

A Brief History Of The University Libraries: Founding To 2019, Kathleen Tiller
Reports and Promotional Materials
The University of Dayton’s newly renovated Roesch Library might stir up fond memories of the good old days or present a whole new image of what a library has to offer. One thing for certain: The current library is vastly different from the one St. Mary’s Institute students used during the 1860s. In this essay, librarian emerita Kathleen Tiller shares a brief history of libraries on the University of Dayton campus.

The historical and educational context for the Characteristics of Marianist Universities is both local and global. The Society of Mary (Marianists) was founded in France in 1817 by Blessed William Joseph Chaminade. The first Marianists arrived in the United States in 1849. The reputation of the Marianists as educators in Europe led the first brothers in the United States to establish schools.
Today, the Marianist brothers and priests of the Province of the United States serve in communities and ministries from Honolulu to Puerto Rico and in Eastern Africa, India, Ireland and Mexico. In the United States, along with the …

Development Of A Methodology For Characterizing Reaction Kinetics, Rheology, And In-Situ Compaction Of Polyimide Prepregs During Cure, James Raymond Magato, Donald A. Klosterman
Chemical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications
PMR-type polyimide prepregs are challenging to fabricate into high quality composites due to volatiles that are generated and must be removed in situ during processing. The current work was conducted to develop accurate, reliable, and practical characterization techniques of the prepreg rheology, volatile generation, and subsequent volatile removal from the prepreg during composite fabrication. Thermal analysis was used to characterize volatile generation, reaction rates, and rheology. A novel approach was used to measure the thickness of the prepreg in situ during vacuum bag/oven processing using a high-temperature LVDT. Experimental results are presented for the commercially available RM-1100 polyimide/carbon prepreg system, …

Assessing The Efficacy Of Seedling Planting As A Forest Restoration Technique In Temperate Hardwood Forests Impacted By Invasive Species, Michaela J. Woods, Meredith Cobb, Katie Hickle

The emerald ash borer (Agrilus planipennis Fairmaire; EAB) is an invasive insect that causes mortality of trees in the genus Fraxinus, creating canopy gaps that may facilitate invasion by exotic plants. Planting native tree seedlings under EAB-infested Fraxinus may accelerate succession and preclude invasive plant expansion; however, the effectiveness of this approach has not been experimentally tested. We assessed understory seedling planting of Quercus rubra, Carya laciniosa, and Juglans cinerea in EAB-infested forests, where the invasive shrub Lonicera maackii (Amur honeysuckle) was removed. We tested whether the use of plastic tree shelters (“tree tubes”) or planting season (fall versus spring) …
