Choosing The Purr-Fact Candidate, Allia Zobel Nolan

(Editor's Note: This piece by Allia Zobel Nolan originally ran in The News-Times on Nov. 4, 2019). Politics. We can't live with it. We can't live without it. It's in the pawfront of our daily lives. And now more so than ever. Small wonder, when the time comes, we the people are panicking about choosing the right leaders - whether it's a government official, the head of the PTA, or even our book club president.

Literary Critic Explores Place And Belonging In Pakistan, Dave Larsen

College of Arts and Sciences Newsroom

Religious nationalism is the dominant discourse in Pakistan, which was created as a nation-state for the Muslims of British India in 1947. But when a nation’s boundaries are created by a former colonizer, how does that impact people’s sense of belonging, asks University of Dayton literary critic Shazia Rahman.

How's Your Momma And Nem, Kristie Noojin-Barnett

Erma Bombeck Writers' Workshop Blog

While residing in the Sunshine State, I longed for the simple life of the rural south. My fondest childhood memories are of those simple pleasures: watching the fireflies dance in the moonlight between the tear drop leaves of a weeping willow, the feel of watermelon dripping down my chin on a hot summer day by the glistening lake, and the warm and fuzzy feeling that comes from being waved at by a complete stranger. I felt my escape from Yankee land would be my salvation.

To Which World Regions Does The Valence-Dominance Model Of Social Perception Apply?, Benedict C. Jones, Erin M. O'Mara

Psychology Faculty Publications

Over the last ten years, Oosterhof and Todorov’s valence-dominance model has emerged as the most prominent account of how people evaluate faces on social dimensions. In this model, two dimensions (valence and dominance) underpin social judgments of faces. To which world regions this model applies is a critical, yet unanswered, question. We will address this question by replicating Oosterhof and Todorov’s methodology across multiple world regions.

Creating An Interprofessional Collaborative Research Opportunity For Physical And Occupational Therapy Students, Anne Fleischer, Mary Insana Fisher, Shirley P. O'Brien

Physical Therapy Faculty Publications

Physical therapy (PT) and occupational therapy (OT) professional associations assert the importance that entry-level therapists learn and apply the knowledge and skills necessary for interprofessional collaborative practice; however, the majority of PT and OT programs do not have the other discipline at their university. A challenge exists for the creation of a transparent active learning opportunity promoting interprofessional student engagement when the two professions do not reside in the same university. This case study provides a model for how to feasibly create an interprofessional experience for students in universities that do not include a complementary or collaborative allied health professional …

As the interconnectedness of the world grows, the need to prepare college students capable of addressing complexity likewise grows. In this context, the University of Dayton has developed and tested a transdisciplinary model for education. This model links multiple classes from different disciplines via a common theme and within a common space. It also employs an educational model premised on the following trajectory: disciplinary content development / transdisciplinary observation (empathy); transdisciplinary disruption leading to “A-Ha” observations which transform the disciplinary directions; and lastly transdisciplinary informed design and research. Central to this model is a 3,500 square foot common space used …

Weaponization Of The Border, Neomi De Anda Nov 2019

Weaponization Of The Border, Neomi De Anda

Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications

In response to deadly shootings having taken place near the author's hometown, this paper addresses the impact of weaponization within the culture of the United States as it shows itself in an epidemic of gun violence. Attentive to Christian thinking on violence, this paper pushes for renewed conversation on weaponization, and it challenges scholars to work toward concrete actions to deconstruct the tools of weaponization.

Since this paper was first presented, the author has provided multiple appendices that chart the instances of gun violence between 2019 and 2024 within schools and for mass shootings.
