War has come to my yard! But this battle doesn't involve modern conventional weapons with individual rounds of ammunition that cost almost as much as my eldest and most expensive daughter's wardrobe. Penelope is attacking her wardrobe. I can tell she has no further use for me by her expression of utter disgust. All my life I've belonged to Penelope (at least five years). She wore me in the beginning. I am full bodied and calf length, made of indigo denim with buttons down the centre front. She now favours shorter and longer lengths.

Two summers ago, I fell on my face on Flatbush Avenue in Brooklyn. Luckily, I had one hand free to shield my face. But that hand didn't escape injury. One nail broke open and my finger bled profusely. I didn't even notice my skinned knees until later.

To an observer, University of Dayton graduate Westina Matthews has mastered the art of reinvention, but she begs to differ. "I wouldn't call it reinvention," says Matthews, who traded a fast-paced corporate executive life in Manhattan for a quieter one of reflection, prayer and writing along the Wilmington River in Savannah where she lives with her husband, Alan. "I'm living into the call." She's published a book of essays, Dancing from the Inside Out: Grace-Filled Reflections on Growing Older.

How To Bathe A Baby, Jerry Zezima

Erma Bombeck Writers' Workshop Blog
