Derivation Of The (Closed-Form) Particular Solution Of The Poisson’S Equation In 3d Using Oscillatory Radial Basis Function, Anup R. Lamichhane, Steven Manns Jan 2020

Derivation Of The (Closed-Form) Particular Solution Of The Poisson’S Equation In 3d Using Oscillatory Radial Basis Function, Anup R. Lamichhane, Steven Manns

Undergraduate Mathematics Day: Past Content

Partial differential equations (PDEs) are useful for describing a wide variety of natural phenomena, but analytical solutions of these PDEs can often be difficult to obtain. As a result, many numerical approaches have been developed. Some of these numerical approaches are based on the particular solutions. Derivation of these particular solutions are challenging. This work is about how the Laplace operator can be written in a more convenient form when it is applied to radial basis functions and then use this form to derive the (closed-form) particular solution of the Poisson’s equation in 3D with the oscillatory radial function in …

RATIONALE:

The Department of Geology formally propose to change its name to the Department of Geology and Environmental Geosciences.

Geology is a scientific discipline that deals with the Earth's physical structure and chemical composition, its history, and processes that shape the planet. Traditionally, geologists study the rocks, map the mountains and discover fossils to explain the landscape, discover the workings of the continents and the deep Earth, and put together the history of the Earth’s physical environment and biological evolution. In practical applications, geologists also find groundwater resources, energy resources, and mineral deposits of great economic values.

1. Rationale for the new program, definition of the focus of the program and a brief description of its disciplinary purpose and significance, including unique features of the program (e.g., international study, service learning, research, etc.).:

The Management and Marketing department proposes to offer a new Management major. In many ways this proposal represents a modest revision of the existing International Business Management major (which we plan to discontinue if this proposal is approved). The current International Business Management major requires students to select an emphasis in either Global Markets or International Human Resources.

In contrast, the new …

In the above article [1], Figure 2 was incorrect. Unfortunately, we mixed the color label of "CONV $\to $ BN $\to $ ReLu" and "Unpooling" in the CNN structure section of Figure 2. The color label of "CONV $\to $ BN $\to $ ReLu" should be orange while the color label of "Unpooling" should be green. Also, the word "Decoder" is misspelled. That same figure with the same error is also used for the graphic abstract. The corrected figure is given here. None of the sections in the figure is modified. The only change is in the color label of …

Into The River, University Of Dayton. River Stewards

Rivers Institute Publications

This picture book, written by the 2020 cohort of River Stewards for the third-grade reading level, takes readers on a colorful adventure through the Great Miami River.

The writing process began in the fall of 2019 with events with area watershed leaders, educators and children. After children wrote and drew their favorite memories from the river, the River Stewards employed the children’s words and pictures to help articulate the landmarks, lessons and literary elements in the book.

In the spring of 2020, the River Stewards wrote, illustrated and designed the book — a story that incorporates local landmarks, fundamental watershed …

Patch-Based Gaussian Mixture Model For Scene Motion Detection In The Presence Of Atmospheric Optical Turbulence, Richard L. Van Hook, Russell C. Hardie Jan 2020

Patch-Based Gaussian Mixture Model For Scene Motion Detection In The Presence Of Atmospheric Optical Turbulence, Richard L. Van Hook, Russell C. Hardie

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

In long-range imaging regimes, atmospheric turbulence degrades image quality. In addition to blurring, the turbulence causes geometric distortion effects that introduce apparent motion in acquired video. This is problematic for image processing tasks, including image enhancement and restoration (e.g., superresolution) and aided target recognition (e.g., vehicle trackers). To mitigate these warping effects from turbulence, it is necessary to distinguish between actual in-scene motion and apparent motion caused by atmospheric turbulence. Previously, the current authors generated a synthetic video by injecting moving objects into a static scene and then applying a well-validated anisoplanatic atmospheric optical turbulence simulator. With known per-pixel truth …

‘To Sing The Haiku The American Way Is A Beautiful Thing’: The Haiku Of Etheridge Knight, Thomas Lewis Morgan Jan 2020

‘To Sing The Haiku The American Way Is A Beautiful Thing’: The Haiku Of Etheridge Knight, Thomas Lewis Morgan

English Faculty Publications

This essay takes up Etheridge Knight’s haiku as a means to trace his “major metaphor” of prison as a form of postcolonial cross-cultural haiku poetics. Knight’s haiku often focus on those that are voiceless along with the systems that work to disenfranchise them, using their experiences and conditions to engage the unequal power dynamics silently perpetuating inequality. In mapping out the explicit and implicit walls that position the hierarchies present in Knight’s haiku, and connecting these to his published comments on the role and function of haiku within his own poetic imagination, we can better understand Knight’s interest in re-imagining …

A Cathedral Not Made By Hands, Vincent J. Miller Jan 2020

A Cathedral Not Made By Hands, Vincent J. Miller

Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications

In Laudato si’, Pope Francis offers a vision of moral responsibility rooted in awareness of the world around us. He points to St. Francis, who “looked with love” on all creatures, as a model. He writes of an “attitude of the heart, one which approaches life with serene attentiveness, which is capable of being fully present” to everyone and everything. And he also calls for an “intense dialogue” between religion and science, which has its own “gaze.” The H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest in Oregon, one of the world’s most studied ecosystems, offers an especially rich opportunity for such dialogue. Here …
