Cancer Rehabilitation Publications (2008–2018) With A Focus On Physical Function: A Scoping Review, Shana Harrington, Nicole L. Stout, Elizabeth Hile, Mary Insana Fisher, Melissa Eden, Victoria Marchese, Lucinda Pfalzer

Physical Therapy Faculty Publications

Background: Cancer rehabilitation research has accelerated over the last decade. However, closer examination of the published literature reveals that the majority of this work has focused on psychological interventions and cognitive and behavioral therapies. Recent initiatives have aggregated expert consensus around research priorities, highlighting a dearth in research regarding measurement of and interventions for physical function. Increasingly loud calls for the need to address the myriad of physical functional impairments that develop in people living with and beyond cancer have been published in the literature. A detailed survey of the landscape of published research has not been reported to our …

Profile: Arlene Schindler, Erma Bombeck Writers' Workshop

Erma Bombeck Writers' Workshop Blog

Arlene Schindler often says, "I come from a long line of miserable people." This is her shorthand for growing up in what she calls "an iconoclastic, dramatic Brooklyn Jewish family." She writes and speaks frequently about issues of Jewish identity, East coast angst and feelings of invisibility at mid-life. Using humor and affection, she's tackled topics like dating, marriage to a sex addict, divorce (not a surprise), as well as diet, weight and emotional eating.

Chemical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

This study focuses on the impact of team formation approach on teamwork effectiveness and performance spanning three years of instruction of the chemical engineering unit operations laboratory, which is an upper-level undergraduate laboratory course. Team formation approaches changed each year, and assessment tools, including peer-assessment, academic performance, and course evaluations, were employed to evaluate team performance. Approaches included three cases: instructor-selected teams based on GPA with the objective of a similar cumulative average GPA for each team, student self-selected teams, and a combination of self-selected teams with instructor-selected teams for a final experiment. For the third case, new teams were …

Brain Injury Is Treatable, Susan C. Davies, Jennifer P. Lundine, Shari L. Wade, Ann E. Glang Feb 2020

Brain Injury Is Treatable, Susan C. Davies, Jennifer P. Lundine, Shari L. Wade, Ann E. Glang

Counselor Education and Human Services Faculty Publications

Children with traumatic brain injury (TBI) are under-identified and under-served by healthcare and educational professionals. Factors such as lack of understanding regarding long-term needs following TBI, limited awareness and training in emerging evidence-based practices and inefficient care coordination (Haarbauer-Krupa et al., 2017) impede effective clinical management. Despite these considerable challenges, childhood brain injury is treatable. Families, schools, and healthcare systems are integral to that treatment. Where a child lives and learns can also greatly influence long-term outcomes. Children from home environments with supportive caregivers have more positive outcomes (Wade et al., 2016). Closer proximity to medical care and providers who …

Taking Flight As A Campus Partner: Library Programs Support A Residential Curriculum, Katy Kelly, Heidi Gauder

Books and Book Chapters by University of Dayton Faculty

In this chapter, librarians discuss the process of taking part in a university co-curricular residential learning program that effectively tripled attendance at library workshops and continues to challenge and inspire librarians to try new topics and partnerships. By connecting the programs to campus learning goals, the number of library events grew 50% over one year, with individuals from multiple library departments hosting or supporting the events. The authors also include descriptions of efforts related to planning, marketing and assessment of these programs and offer some benefits and challenges to UD’s program model. As the demand for campus programs continues to …

My Doughy Rump, Marie Lemond Jan 2020

My Doughy Rump, Marie Lemond

Erma Bombeck Writers' Workshop Blog

My husband and I have been married so long we have our own food signal system. A quick wave of the biscuit cutter means we're headed for hot, buttered, biscuit heaven. An ice cream scoop on the counter sets a course for rocky road. A little bell rung at four o'clock is a cue to grab a glass and muster for happy hour. We spent all autumn signaling. Then one morning, I got a big signal we'd better stop-I sat down to put on my shoes, and blew out the seat of my pants.

Mary, Queen Of Style: Documenting Catholic Modest Fashion In Special Collections, Jillian M. Ewalt

Marian Library Faculty Presentations

In postwar America, Catholic teenage girls found themselves at the center of a debate. Everyone, it seemed, had a different opinion about what kind of clothing they should wear. Two modest fashion movements emerged that aimed to solve this problem. Supply the Demand for the Supply (SDS) was a lay initiative founded by teenage girls in the Midwest that quickly spread into a national Catholic youth movement. Meanwhile, the Marilyke Crusade, orchestrated by parish priest Father Bernard Kunkel and the Purity Crusade of Mary Immaculate, promulgated and sold modest clothing based on a particular brand of fear-mongering, Fatima-centric Marian devotion. …

A Moment In Time, Teri Rizvi

Erma Bombeck Writers' Workshop Blog

(This piece originally ran in the University of Dayton Quarterly in the summer of 2000 following the launch of the Erma Bombeck Writers' Workshop.) A treasured gift - a clock with a smiling photo of Bill and Erma Bombeck - sits on my cluttered office desk. "The clock photo thing was a part of her office. The picture had been changed. (She probably had Paul what's-his-name Newman in it)," wrote Bill Bombeck in a funny, touching thank-you note after the Erma Bombeck Conference on Popular American Humor at the University of Dayton. "The success was beyond my wildest dreams."

Review—Deep Learning Methods For Sensor Based Predictive Maintenance And Future Perspectives For Electrochemical Sensors, Srikanth Namuduri, Barath Narayanan Narayanan, Venkata Salini Priyamvada Davuluru, Lamar Burton, Shekhar Bhansali

Office for Research Publications and Presentations

The downtime of industrial machines, engines, or heavy equipment can lead to a direct loss of revenue. Accurate prediction of such failures using sensor data can prevent or reduce the downtime. With the availability of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies, it is possible to acquire the sensor data in real-time. Machine Learning and Deep Learning (DL) algorithms can then be used to predict the part and equipment failures, given enough historical data. DL algorithms have shown significant advances in problems where progress has eluded the practitioners and researchers for several decades. This paper reviews the DL algorithms used for predictive …

Sociology Major Develops Survey About The Impact Of Photos On Perception, Hayden Doyle

College of Arts and Sciences Newsroom

University of Dayton junior Katie Gross was struck by an experience she had at an exhibit that featured stories from Dayton community members, along with their portraits. Influenced by not only their words, but also their images, she wondered if science could prove the impact of photographs on human perception. Working with a faculty mentor, she developed a study to determine whether including a photo with a narrative influences the way people see another person and process their story.
