License To Drive Us … Crazy, Pam J. Hecht

Erma Bombeck Writers' Workshop Blog

A trip to the local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) can make a person decide to move to the countryside and travel on horseback. I was back at the DMV recently, to accompany my 18-year-old getting his permanent license, and decided to update my own license, too. Scrubbing down the inside of an exhaust pipe would have been more pleasurable. Waiting in line at the DMV can last almost longer than it would take to teach a bottlenose dolphin how to drive.

For those of you who know me, you know that my ability in the kitchen is slim to none. When I was about 27, I attempted to make rice for the first time. I grew up watching I Love Lucy, and that was part of the problem. I decided to call my mom for guidance.

Little Shoppers Give Me Food For Thought, Jerry Zezima

Whenever I go to the grocery store, I am the designated driver for my wife, Sue, who likes to say, after I get lost in the beer aisle, that I put the cart before the horse's aft. So I was grateful to get a food shopping demonstration from my granddaughters Chloe and Lilly, each of whom was recently a "customer in training."

The Prom Dresses, Vicki Austin

It's that time of year, again. Our daughter is only a junior in high school, yet somehow my husband and I found ourselves a few weeks ago, for the third year in a row, shopping with her for a prom dress. It might have something to do with the fact that we live in a modest four-story brick, right along with 80 high school boys. These young men assure us repeatedly that she's just like a sister to them. Sure.

Broadway Melody Of Covid-19, Laurie O'Connor Stephans

Erma Bombeck Writers' Workshop Blog

Unless you've been living in a cave somewhere, you know the only hope for mankind surviving the Coronavirus, or COVID-19, is for all of us to properly wash our hands. (Actually, that cave thing might work, too, but I digress.) A critical component of that hand washing protocol is that we scrub for a minimum of 20 seconds, which can be timed by singing two full renditions of "Happy Birthday." Whether you are a fellow Broadway aficionado or are simply sick of "Happy Birthday," I offer this brief libretto of Show Tunes for Sanitation … a rewrite of some classics …

Work-At-Home Tips During Uncertain Times, Cara Mcdonough

As a freelance writer, I work on my own most of the time. I've gotten used to being distracted, fitting in social interaction where I can and dealing with all the other realities of working from home. Since many are now being asked to do the same, due to COVID-19 and the push for "social distancing," I thought I'd share some tips.

Midlife Crisis Intervention, Jase Graves Mar 2020

Midlife Crisis Intervention, Jase Graves

Erma Bombeck Writers' Workshop Blog

I turn the "big 5-0" this year, which means I'm at imminent risk of slipping into a midlife crisis. Some of my friends and fellow AARP invitees are already deep in the throes of "manopause" and have become objects of pity and ridicule-and not just from their wives. I plan to avoid that sad fate, which all too often goes viral on social media, and be prepared when my crisis hits-or bursts from my chest cavity, grows into a hideous alien creature with hair implants, and tries to destroy my dignity and bank account.

Leadership Training In Burkina, Corinne Brion Mar 2020

Leadership Training In Burkina, Corinne Brion

Educational Leadership Faculty Publications

I have been blessed to work in Burkina Faso for the past five years. Our task there has been to build the capacity of school leaders. School leaders in Low-Fee Private Schools (LFPSs) do not have any formal training and in most instances are not educators. Because a training is as good as its material and trainers, we developed contextualized research-based educational leadership materials in which adult learning theories are embedded. We train local school leaders, train local trainers through a Train the Trainers model (TOT), and conduct research.

Lost In Translation, Joanna Manning Mar 2020

Lost In Translation, Joanna Manning

Erma Bombeck Writers' Workshop Blog

When I first moved to Germany in the late 90s, I enrolled in a brief course on German language and culture to help ease my transition to my new home. I don't remember much about the class; in fact, the only thing I clearly remember is that the instructor made it a point to teach us the German word for diarrhea, which (I will never forget) is Durchfall.
