Ask A Terrier — Sheltering Outside The Shelter, Dave Jaffe

Erma Bombeck Writers' Workshop Blog

Dear Budleigh, In these pandemic times, I'm confident that your focus is on safety and community because you're medically trained and don't need toilet paper. We Giants are trying to do the same, but it ain't easy! Worry runs high. Fortunately, many of us have you guys to cuddle. I hope that this isn't straining the Giant/Canine relationship. If so, look, there's gonna be an extra cookie in it for all of you, I guarantee! Be well and wash your paws! Charles, Ft. Worth TX

Getting A Grip On Worry: 10 Things You Can Do, Allia Zobel Nolan

Erma Bombeck Writers' Workshop Blog

I admit it. I'm a worrywart. And I've been one all my life. In fact, worrying is my life. From the time I put my foot out of the bed, to the moment I lay my head on the pillow, I'm a bundle of nerves. The good news, though, is I'm in recovery. I've done a lot of research on anxieties. I've even written a book on the subject. OK, so in the process, I've bitten my nails to the quick. Still, I've also gained a modicum of insight.

In Longhand, In Indelible Ink, Teri Rizvi

Erma Bombeck Writers' Workshop Blog

Soon after 2020 dawned, I embarked on what Julia Cameron, author of The Artist's Way, calls "creative recovery." I began jotting some stream-of-consciousness thoughts in longhand. Not every day. And these short essays were not always very good. That's not the point. The point is to write, to break through whatever is stopping you from creating - whether it's procrastination, fear or laziness.

Life And Love In The Time Of Coronavirus, John Grogan

Erma Bombeck Writers' Workshop Blog

(This piece originally appeared on John Grogan's blog on March 23, 2020. Reposted by permission.) What a difference a few days can make. Not long ago, I was watching coronavirus taking hold in Seattle, but still, like most Americans, considered it far away and of no immediate concern to me. I went about my daily business. On Wednesday, March 11, I was annoyed when we arrived at an Indian restaurant for lunch and were told they had abruptly stopped the help-yourself lunch buffet "until further notice." "You mean I have to order off the dinner menu?" I grumbled. The next …

Silver Lining: A Letter To Students From Misty Thomas-Trout, Misty Thomas-Trout

COVID-19 Graphic Design: Data Visualization and Information Design

This is a handwritten letter from Misty Thomas-Trout to her Graphic Design I (VAD 411) students in March, sent the day before classes resumed following spring break. Initially, virtual education was a precaution, set to last for two weeks; however, it extended for the remainder of the term and the summer term. By the time the fall semester began in late August 2020, more than 5 million cases had been reported in the United States.

Following the handwritten letter is a typed version. The indents of the paragraphs reflect the way the letter appeared on paper.

The letter was the …
