Business Ethics As A Form Of Practical Reasoning: What Philosophers Can Learn From Patagonia, Mark Ryan

As with other fields of applied ethics, philosophers engaged in business ethics struggle to carry out substantive philosophical reflection in a way that mirrors the practical reasoning that goes on within business management itself. One manifestation of the philosopher’s struggle is the field’s division into approaches that emphasize moral philosophy and those grounded in the methods of social science. I claim here that the task, at least for those with philosophical training, is to avoid unintentionally widening the gap between philosophical theory and those engaged in business management by emphasizing the centrality of practical wisdom (phronesis) to the moral life. …

Text-To-Image Synthesis Via Aesthetic Layout, Samah Saeed Baraheem, Trung-Nghia Le, Tam V. Nguyen

In this work, we introduce a practical system which synthesizes an appealing image from natural language descriptions such that the generated image should maintain the aesthetic level of photographs. Our proposed method takes the text from the end-users via a user-friendly interface and produces a set of different label maps via the primary generator PG. Then, choosing a subset from the label maps set is performed through the primary aesthetic appreciation PAA. Next, our subset of label maps is fed into the accessory generator AG, which is the state-of-the-art image-to-image translation. Last but not least, our subset of generated images …

Each year, the INFORMS Edelman Award celebrates the best and most impactful implementations of operations research, management science, and analytics. As the Edelman Award approaches its 50-year mark, we provide a history and characterization of the award’s finalists and winners. We provide some basic descriptive analytics about the participating organizations and authors, the impact of their work, and the methods they employed. We also conduct predictive analytics on finalist submissions, gauging contributors to success in establishing winning entries. We find that predicting Edelman winners a priori is extremely difficult; however, given a set of finalists, predictive models based on monetary …
