Simulation Of Anisoplanatic Lucky Look Imaging And Statistics Through Optical Turbulence Using Numerical Wave Propagation, Michael A. Rucci, Russell C. Hardie, Richard K. Martin
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
This paper investigates anisoplanatic numerical wave simulation in the context of lucky look imaging. We demonstrate that numerical wave propagation can produce root mean square (RMS) wavefront distributions and probability of lucky look (PLL) statistics that are consistent with Kolmogorov theory. However, the simulated RMS statistics are sensitive to the sampling parameters used in the propagation window. To address this, we propose and validate a new sample spacing rule based on the point source bandwidth used in the propagation and the level of atmospheric turbulence. We use the tuned simulator to parameterize the wavefront RMS probability density function as a …

The SARS-CoV-2 virus, which causes the COVID-19 disease, has swiftly infected millions of people since it was first identified in late 2019. While much remains unknown about the virus, it is increasingly clear that many survivors (including children and adolescents) struggle with ongoing symptoms for months after they receive a negative test.
The National Institutes of Health recently started using the term “post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 (PASC) infection,” and we encourage its use because the term more accurately refers to the symptoms and complications experienced after the virus is no longer detected via testing.
Many PASC symptoms resemble persistent symptoms …

Antimicrobial Resistance: A Challenge Awaiting The Post-Covid-19 Era, Tekle Airgecho Lobie, Aklilu Abrham Roba, James Alexander Booth, Knut Ivan Kristiansen, Abraham Aseffa, Kirsten Skarstad, Magnar Bjørås
Research on Antimicrobial Resistance
Microbe exposure to pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical agents plays a role in the development of antibiotic resistance. The risks and consequences associated with extensive disinfectant use during the COVID-19 pandemic remain unclear. Some disinfectants, like sanitizers, contain genotoxic chemicals that damage microbial DNA, like phenol and hydrogen peroxide. This damage activates error-prone DNA repair enzymes, which can lead to mutations that induce antimicrobial resistance. Public health priority programs that have faced drug-resistance challenges associated with diseases, such as tuberculosis, HIV, and malaria, have given less attention to risks attributable to the COVID-19 pandemic. Pathogen-specific programs, like the directly observed treatment strategy …

Advancing Energy Efficiency In Solar Systems: A Comparative Study Of Microchannel Heat Sink Cooling Method For Photovoltaic Cells, Vibhu Sharma
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Graduate Student Publications
In the pursuit of renewable energy solutions, solar photovoltaic systems have emerged as a key player in generating clean electricity. However, high operating temperatures pose a significant challenge to their efficiency and longevity, particularly in concentrated photovoltaic (CPV) systems. This paper reviews and evaluates various cooling strategies, from natural air cooling to advanced techniques like phase change materials, liquid immersion, and jet impingement, to maintain optimal operating temperatures for solar cells. Our study assesses the impact of these cooling methods on PV system performance, cost, and environmental implications. We find that microchannel cooling significantly improves thermal performance, resulting in notable …
