He Came In Like A Wrecking Ball: How Martin Luther Dismantled The Three Walls Of The Romanists, Eleanor Yates-Mcewan
Line by Line: A Journal of Beginning Student Writing
Recipient of the Fr. Jack McGrath, S.M., Award for Research in Catholic Intellectual Tradition
The writing process for this project was stressful but incredibly rewarding. I began by reading and annotating the source text, Martin Luther's "The Three Walls of the Romanists," an excerpt from the larger An Open Letter to the Christian Nobility of the German Nation. Then, I wrote out a first draft of the summary section and sketched out a rough idea of the arguments I thought might be convincing to the modern Catholic. After I received initial feedback from my professor, I continued the drafting …

Undocumented: A Hidden Population In Plain Sight, Eunice B. Anomakoh
Line by Line: A Journal of Beginning Student Writing
Recipient of the award for Best Personal Argument ($100)
For this paper, I began by examining myself to find a personal experience and then conducting research to contextualize and allow my audience to better understand my experience. For the first part (the narrative section) I did a first draft and then a final draft. For the second portion (the research portion) I completed an annotated bibliography, a rough draft, and a final draft. My professor and I then revised the completed copy together before submitting it.
Racing To Equality: A Critique Of Female Exclusion In Motorsports, Luke Colegrove
Racing To Equality: A Critique Of Female Exclusion In Motorsports, Luke Colegrove
Line by Line: A Journal of Beginning Student Writing
I wrote this article as an assignment for my ENG 198 class. We were originally assigned to establish a research-supported argument on the subject of gender, choosing the direction we wanted to take. As a fan of all types of motorsports, I noticed a lack of competition among males and females on the professional level. There are numerous examples of talented women in the sport, and I believed their voices needed to be heard. This inspired me to develop this piece of writing. After multiple drafts, peer reviews, and personal critiques by my professor, I was able to create an …

Summary & Rhetorical Analysis Of Augustine’S Conversion Story, Kathleen M. Crump
Summary & Rhetorical Analysis Of Augustine’S Conversion Story, Kathleen M. Crump
Line by Line: A Journal of Beginning Student Writing
For my project “St. Augustine and His Path to Conversion” I engaged in a lengthy and comprehensive writing process. To begin I read select sections of Augustine’s Confessions and annotated his work in detail. This part of the writing process was essential to begin my essay as it allowed me to engage in discussion during ASI 110 seminar and establish what exactly Augustine meant within his work. Discussion with peers and my professor, Dr. Elizabeth Mackay, really opened my eyes to the insightful and confusing nature of Augustine’s writing. After annotations and discussion I began to create an outline for …

Summary Of Plato’S Apology (24b-26b), Kathleen M. Crump
Line by Line: A Journal of Beginning Student Writing
For my project “Socrates: Corruptor, Improver, or Neither?” I engaged in a lengthy and comprehensive writing process. To begin I read Plato’s Apology and annotated his work in much detail. This part of the writing process was essential to begin my essay as it allowed me to engage in discussion during ASI 110 seminar and establish what exactly Plato meant within his work. After annotations and discussion I began to create an outline for my essay and worked through how it should be structured. This led to writing a rough draft and a writing conference with my professor, Dr. Elizabeth …
Addressing Stem Gender Disparity, Liesl Carter
Addressing Stem Gender Disparity, Liesl Carter
Line by Line: A Journal of Beginning Student Writing
I had written this piece under my English 198 class theme of gender. I wanted to explore why there is a continued gender gap in STEM. I had researched and analyzed articles that worked to explain this concept. I then conducted personal research in the form of a survey and interview to apply my findings to personal life experiences particularly at the University of Dayton. My overall writing process included research and analysis written into numerous drafts which were reviewed by both peers and my professor.

The Power Of Females And Femininity In 'The Silmarillion', Madeline Shelly
Line by Line: A Journal of Beginning Student Writing
Recipient of the award for Best Researched Argument ($100)
The theme for this assignment was to analyze some aspect of gender roles in a piece of popular culture. I chose to write about the portrayal of female characters in the novel The Silmarillion by J.R.R. Tolkien. After I picked this topic, I brainstormed ideas, wrote a research proposal, found sources, wrote an annotated bibliography, wrote the draft, had it peer reviewed, then edited it to the final version.

Then I created a first draft of the research paper and revised based on peer feedback. I did this against with a second draft and revised it into the final research paper.
Brothers: Their Unexpected Effects On Women's Careers, Victoria L. Brey
Brothers: Their Unexpected Effects On Women's Careers, Victoria L. Brey
Line by Line: A Journal of Beginning Student Writing
I began this essay by researching the effects brothers have on women's careers, which was a topic of personal interest to me since I have two brothers. Upon finding that women with brothers are at a career disadvantage compared to women without brothers, I investigated why brothers cause a disadvantage by studying more scholarly articles about how parents raise boys and girls differently. Then I conducted personal research about the impacts parental sex-typing has on children with same-sex versus mixed-sex siblings to analyze the extent to which people from my generation were raised according to traditional gender norms that could …

Andrew Johnson's Impact On Reconstruction, Travis A. Kutter
Line by Line: A Journal of Beginning Student Writing
I began this historiography with a list of five possible topics to choose from related to the Reconstruction Era. From there, I chose the topic of Andrew Johnson and Reconstruction because I had never known much about the seventeenth President of the United States. I began to conduct research, navigating online databases and scanning the Roesch library for possible sources. I compiled a list of fifteen sources from which I chose a final eight. Summarizing each source and taking note of recurring themes, I composed an annotated bibliography. This served as the first draft of my historiography. I transformed this …

Background Nuclei classification, segmentation, and detection from pathological images are challenging tasks due to cellular heterogeneity in the Whole Slide Images (WSI). Methods In this work, we propose advanced DCNN models for nuclei classification, segmentation, and detection tasks. The Densely Connected Neural Network (DCNN) and Densely Connected Recurrent Convolutional Network (DCRN) models are applied for the nuclei classification tasks. The Recurrent Residual U-Net (R2U-Net) and the R2UNet-based regression model named the University of Dayton Net (UD-Net) are applied for nuclei segmentation and detection tasks respectively. The experiments are conducted on publicly available datasets, including Routine Colon Cancer (RCC) classification and …

Blog Archive: River Reflections at the University of Dayton
My favorite thing about the rivers in Dayton…sorry, but I can’t just pick one. I would say the first thing that comes to mind is that the rivers recharge our aquifer. This is extremely important for our access to freshwater for drinking, cooking, and for life. I have been studying at Chaminade University on O'ahu this semester, and let me tell you, Ohio is blessed to have such great access to freshwater. You see, the development of canals and buildings has destroyed O'ahu’s wetlands, and freshwater springs have been plugged up. Their aquifer recharges a lot less than it used …

Learning About Dayton And Myself Through River Stewards, Lily Pestorius
Blog Archive: River Reflections at the University of Dayton
As a first-year student at UD I had no knowledge or connection to the City of Dayton. I did not know of any opportunities to learn and participate in service hours in the city or even where to start. In the past year, I have learned more about the City of Dayton than I have about my own hometown that I lived in for 18 years. I have more connections through River Stewards that have allowed me to learn so much more about service opportunities out in nature. I would have never learned about the Aquifer or the Great Miami …
