The Ethics Of Exploitation: Brecht's Der Gute Mensch Von Sezuan, Janet K. Swaffar Mar 1979

The Ethics Of Exploitation: Brecht's Der Gute Mensch Von Sezuan, Janet K. Swaffar

University of Dayton Review

Depending on their respective persuasions, critics have been disposed to interpret Der gute Mensch von Sezuan as a statement about the impossibility of ethical behavior in a venal world or, alternatively, as an overt critique of capitalism, an illustration that virtue cannot be practised until an inhuman economic system has been superseded. However, the play can also be viewed as a very different kind of indictment: an indictment of an absolute value system and of individuals who persist in adhering to an immutable morality. In short, it is possible to argue that in Brecht's Sezuan, the emphasis is on the …

Biblical Themes And Motifs In Brecht's Herr Puntila Und Sein Knecht Matti, Siegfried Mews Mar 1979

Biblical Themes And Motifs In Brecht's Herr Puntila Und Sein Knecht Matti, Siegfried Mews

University of Dayton Review

"Sie werden lachen: Die Bibel," Brecht replied on 1 October 1928 when asked by the editors of the fashionable Berlin magazine Die Dame about the strongest influence on his work. This pithy remark, which surely must be counted among the playwright's better-known and often-quoted phrases, is quite literally true. Although the Biblical influence on Brecht's work is all-pervasive—Reinhold Grimm called it Brecht's "lebenslange und höchst komplexe Abhängigkeit von der Bibel"—as yet no comprehensive study exists which fully explores Brecht's use of the Bible and Christianity. In the absence of such a comprehensive study it is in order to examine individual …

Cover, Introduction, Table Of Contents, Rosario Cambria, University Of Dayton

University of Dayton Review

During the past few years, the University of Dayton Review has, on several occasions, published issues dedicated to the Nobel Prize winning German author Heinrich Böll under the able editorship of Professor Robert Conard. On this occasion, the present issue of the UDR concerns itself with an aspect of the literature of Spain.

When called upon to act as editor for this issue, it was my feeling that, on the one hand, to dedicate it principally to one author in particular would be too limiting, whereas to open it up to include all of Spanish literature would be excessively broad. …

The Spanish Expression Of Catholicism, Rosario Cambria Mar 1979

The Spanish Expression Of Catholicism, Rosario Cambria

University of Dayton Review

The official religion of Spain is Roman Catholicism. To say "Spaniard" is to say "Catholic." Why, then, should we have to talk about the practice of this religion specifically in Spain, when there are other countries where it stands as the majority faith? In reality, not all national communities live the same religious belief in the same manner. It may be identical in its dogma and structure, but its emphasis and external form will be determined by the particular national traits of the people.

The Ludic Element In Unamuno's Thought, Gonzalo Plasencia Mar 1979

The Ludic Element In Unamuno's Thought, Gonzalo Plasencia

University of Dayton Review

Authors such as Jean Paul Sartre and Albert Camus popularized the philosophical movement called existentialism in the 1940s, which declared that man had no nature and that, as a result, he was totally free to choose and direct his own course of life. According to this philosophical perspective, the absurdity of existence and the inadequacy of human reason cause despair, anguish and nausea in man. Existentialism, which was fathered by the nineteenth century Danish philosopher Soren Kierkegaard, has been associated, in one form or another, with many writers and philosophers, e.g., Jose Ortega y Gasset (EI tema de nuestro tiempo, …

Santob: Poet At The Edge Of The Abyss, Nelson R. Orringer Mar 1979

Santob: Poet At The Edge Of The Abyss, Nelson R. Orringer

University of Dayton Review

Events of the mid-fourteenth century produced supreme emotions in the Jews of Castile-exultation in their cultural accomplishments, dread that their enemies might sweep their values away, and faith in a merciful God as Protector and Defender of all that they had built with toil and perseverance. Joel H. Klausner has described the epoch when the death of Alphonso XI, under whom the Jews had prospered, brought to the Castilian throne his son Pedro. This violent, headstrong youth, in the course of his nineteen-year reign (1350- 69), was to earn the epithet "the Cruel." However, like his father, he surrounded himself …

The Isolated Community: Kafka's Village And Thomas Mann's Davos, Margaret Church Mar 1979

The Isolated Community: Kafka's Village And Thomas Mann's Davos, Margaret Church

University of Dayton Review

I have found it useful to examine Thomas Mann's The Magic Mountain as a naturalistic novel, based on the isolated community of the Berghof and of Davos. Likewise, we may explore Kafka's The Castle through its isolated village, but instead of naturalism I would propose another word, transnaturalism, to denote the metaphysically oriented focus of Kafka's laboratory. Transnaturalism seems to me for this study a more precise word than expressionism to apply to Kafka's fiction simply because it offers a sense of polarity or a clear complement to the term naturalism. Obviously, however, expressionism and transnaturalism share much in common, …

Germany In Search Of A Mythology, Gerd K. Schneider Mar 1979

Germany In Search Of A Mythology, Gerd K. Schneider

University of Dayton Review

Thomas Mann, in an essay on Freud, defined myth as the foundation of life because it is timeless and provides insight into the higher truth. The verbal power of the mythologically oriented artist bends the phenomena around him to fit his "ironic and superior gaze." His tools are words. He molds them into symbols, metaphors, and images with which he connects apparent irreconcilables in a striking new image or impression, thereby creating his mythical world. Ernst Cassirer established the indissoluble union of language and myth in the unconscious "grammar" of experience. Language and myth are two diverse shoots from the …
