Jacob's Self-Delusion In Grillparzer's "Der Arme Spielmann", George W. Reinhardt Apr 1981

Jacob's Self-Delusion In Grillparzer's "Der Arme Spielmann", George W. Reinhardt

University of Dayton Review

Most commentators on Grillparzer's "Der arme Spielmann" have regarded Jacob as a secular saint, a man of good will and transcendent vision. This view dominates the literature from Adalbert Stifter's appreciative review to several of the most recent interpretive essays. For example, Robert Browning considers Jacob a prelapsarian artist whose art must remain incomprehensible to the fallen around him. Both Browning and Peter Schaublin deduce a kind of pure, spiritual harmony from Jacob's avoidance of dissonance while improvising. Though conceding that ·Jacob is " simple-minded" and that " the Spielmann's own direct narrative already makes the reader ambivalent about him," …

Existence And Alienation In Rilke's Notebooks Of Malte Laurids Brigge, Eva Merrett Friedman Apr 1981

Existence And Alienation In Rilke's Notebooks Of Malte Laurids Brigge, Eva Merrett Friedman

University of Dayton Review

The alienation of modern man and the enigma of existence have been the cynosure of modern philosophers and thinkers like Kierkegaard, Jaspers, Sartre, and Heidegger. Rainer Maria Rilke grapples with this existential question in the Notebooks of Malte Laurids Brigge. In these Notebooks, which are concerned with man and his destiny, Rilke the artist confronts reality and lays bare the crisis of existence. Man, stripped to his essence without his facade, is pitted relentlessly against his forlorn existence.

Kindheitsmuster In Context: The Achievement Of Christa Wolf, Mary Jane Lamse Apr 1981

Kindheitsmuster In Context: The Achievement Of Christa Wolf, Mary Jane Lamse

University of Dayton Review

In the fall of 1975 Christa Wolf read before the Akademie der Kunste der DDR excerpts from her yet unpublished but long-awaited massive autobiographical novel Kindheitsmuster. At the conclusion of the reading she spoke with her colleagues about the genesis of the novel. In this context she referred to an inci- dent which had occurred during the final days of the war. The memory of this incident, described in greater detail in Kindheitsmuster itself, had been lying dormant within her for many years. Joining the stream of refugees heading west before the advancing Russians, she and her family had …

Ivan Ilych's Death: Secular Or Religious?, Robert L. Duncan Apr 1981

Ivan Ilych's Death: Secular Or Religious?, Robert L. Duncan

University of Dayton Review

In his essay on Existentialism, William Barrett, after briefly summarizing the plot of The Death of Ivan Ilych, concludes, "In the end Ivan Ilych dies content, because he has reached the point of knowing that the life he lived was empty, futile, and meaningless. " R. F. Christian quotes D.F. Mirsky's comment that Ivan Ilych, before his death, "sees the inner light of Faith, renunciation and love," only to ask, "But faith in what? And whom does he love? And how can he help renouncing life when he is at death's door?" Christian then goes on to contend that Tolstoy …

Pope, Pedagogues, And Politicians, William E. Rivers Apr 1981

Pope, Pedagogues, And Politicians, William E. Rivers

University of Dayton Review

In March of 1743 while talking with Joseph Spence, Alexander Pope intimated that, had circumstances been different, he might have written a major work on the faults of the English educational system. Pope's comment on that occasion reveals the importance he attached to such an endeavor. Pope's statement was not a spur-of-the-moment remark. His deep interest in education and his perception of its vital importance to his society can be seen in the notes he made in 1734 toward the writing of his "opus magnum." Though he never finished that single, great ethic work, Pope's thoughts on education did eventually …

Christina Rossetti's Maude: A Reconsideration, Diane D'Amico Apr 1981

Christina Rossetti's Maude: A Reconsideration, Diane D'Amico

University of Dayton Review

Christina Rossetti's Maude: Prose and Verse, a short work written early in the poet's career but not published until three years after her death, is usually considered from an autobiographical perspective, generally an unflattering one. Such an approach was early encouraged by William Michael Rossetti's "Prefatory Note" to the first edition.

The Synthesized Images Of Saint-Exupery, Bertrand Ball Apr 1981

The Synthesized Images Of Saint-Exupery, Bertrand Ball

University of Dayton Review

Scholars have studied in depth the ideas of Saint Exupery, especially the structures that he judges essential for the establishment of the ideal civilization outlined in Citadelle. However, books and articles on the style of the aviator-writer are rare. It is my purpose to show how the images of Citadelle are synthesized in time and space to coincide with the essential acts that lead to the establishment of the proposed empire or ideal civilization.

On The Construction Of Stereotypes, The Problem Of Induction, And Philosophical Idealism, Kenneth P. Wilcox Apr 1981

On The Construction Of Stereotypes, The Problem Of Induction, And Philosophical Idealism, Kenneth P. Wilcox

University of Dayton Review

Now that the most recent era of American "Germanistik" — i.e., that of the almost exclusive commitment to the tenets of New Criticism — has reached its climax and begun to subside, its practioners have begun to reopen themselves to pursuits the goals of which do not necessarily lie within the realm of the aesthetic. Only twenty years ago Rene Wellek condemned the extension of the literary scholar's horizon to include the investigation of national images as they express themselves in literature as being causative of a dissolution "of literary scholarship into social psychology." Recently, however, the profession has become …

The Ideas Of Place: D.H. Lawrence's Travel Books, Donald Gutierrez Apr 1981

The Ideas Of Place: D.H. Lawrence's Travel Books, Donald Gutierrez

University of Dayton Review

Although the critical literature today about the novels of D. H. Lawrence is immense, his standing as a short-story writer very high, and his poetry hardly diminishing as an object of critical interest and appreciation, insufficient attention has been given to the travel books. This is a serious oversight, for Lawrence's travel writings represent an important component of his career. They are a pleasure to read — engagingly descriptive, vividly abtruse, and very human. What a bizarre privilege it is to be at the side of the author of The Rainbow and Women in Love as he reacts to a …
