Rashi, The Jewish Exegete, Eric L. Friedland Apr 1981

Rashi, The Jewish Exegete, Eric L. Friedland

University of Dayton Review

Until modern times virtually every Jewish child imbibed the teachings, the narrative, and law of the Pentateuch with the assistance of Rashi's commentary, or, as the Yiddish expression has it, Humash mit Rashi. Rashi's Bible and Talmud commentaries are still unmatched for conciseness, clarity, and the sure touch of the born educator. Though of medieval French provenance, Rashi's expositions were adopted by Jews everywhere, Ashkenazic, Sephardic, and Oriental, for nearly a thousand years. Nor was his influence restricted to Jews. Within a century after his death, his commentary was taken up by a learned Franciscan monk whose discourses were …

An Archetypal Interpretation Of La Hoja Roja, Elizabeth S. Rogers Apr 1981

An Archetypal Interpretation Of La Hoja Roja, Elizabeth S. Rogers

University of Dayton Review

In La hoja roja (1959) Miguel Delibes has selected as his focus an aging man who might well represent the plight of the uncelebrated senior citizen of our times. What pervades the novel is Delibes' view of the process of aging as a search for calor, both in the literal meaning of physical warmth as well as a symbolic calor viewed in its human dimension as companionship, love, and understanding. These two levels of meaning suggest a third, the archetypal significance of the search for calor as it relates to the central event of the novel, the retirement of …

Anthony Burgess And The Future Of Man: The Wanting Seed, John H. Dorenkamp Apr 1981

Anthony Burgess And The Future Of Man: The Wanting Seed, John H. Dorenkamp

University of Dayton Review

The future of man for Anthony Burgess does not lie ahead. Rather it lies within. For man carries about with him -- in his very nature -- his past, present and future. This is clear from Burgess's futuristic novel, The Wanting Seed, and whatever he may suggest about the future in that novel is also implicit in his other works. In all his novels, Burgess's view of the nature of man is the same: throughout his existential trials, man is essentially the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow. Burgess's view, then, means that the future lies not ahead, but in …

The Necessity Of The Wooing Of Anne In Richard Iii, Andrew Macdonald, Gina Macdonald Apr 1981

The Necessity Of The Wooing Of Anne In Richard Iii, Andrew Macdonald, Gina Macdonald

University of Dayton Review

Richard's wooing of Anne has strained the credibility of modern audiences and readers to an extent unparalleled by any other scene in Shakespeare. Much critical attention has focused on attempts to defend the realism of the scene. Denzell S. Smith, for example, shows how Richard "changes his pose to accord with the natural progression of Anne's emotions," from forceful prince, to "pleader," to "innocent," to "brazen lover" and so on as he anticipates Anne's reactions and meets them with a response that is psychologically (and dramatically) convincing. Anne's reaction to Richard is that of a defenseless small animal to a …

Attitudes Toward The Education And Roles Of Women: Sixteenth-Century Humanists And Seventeenth-Century Advice Books, Christine W. Sizemore Apr 1981

Attitudes Toward The Education And Roles Of Women: Sixteenth-Century Humanists And Seventeenth-Century Advice Books, Christine W. Sizemore

University of Dayton Review

By the mid sixteenth century the fervent belief of such humanists as Juan Louis Vives and Sir Thomas More that women should be educated had, as More predicted in his letter to William Gonell (1518), "born fruit." Women's reason had been "cultivated, and (as a fielde) sowed with wholesome precepts. "Not only the concerns of the humanists but also the Protestant Reformation with its drive for universal literacy led to an increase in the number of educated women. Diane Willen points out that although the reformation caused the closing of the nunnery schools and emphasized the role of women within …

Women In Science — Why So Few?, Faye D. Schwelitz Apr 1981

Women In Science — Why So Few?, Faye D. Schwelitz

University of Dayton Review

Traditionally science and technology have been fields in which almost no women were employed. In recent years increasing numbers of women have been attempting to enter these fields. Affirmative action, equal opportunity and similar legislation have been enacted in an attempt to facilitate the entry of women. One of the purposes of this paper is to report briefly on a study designed to evaluate the success of women pursuing scientific careers. Since the results of this study are not encouraging, we are led to question why. The answer is likely a combination of many factors. One argument, which is invoked …

Jacob's Self-Delusion In Grillparzer's "Der Arme Spielmann", George W. Reinhardt Apr 1981

Jacob's Self-Delusion In Grillparzer's "Der Arme Spielmann", George W. Reinhardt

University of Dayton Review

Most commentators on Grillparzer's "Der arme Spielmann" have regarded Jacob as a secular saint, a man of good will and transcendent vision. This view dominates the literature from Adalbert Stifter's appreciative review to several of the most recent interpretive essays. For example, Robert Browning considers Jacob a prelapsarian artist whose art must remain incomprehensible to the fallen around him. Both Browning and Peter Schaublin deduce a kind of pure, spiritual harmony from Jacob's avoidance of dissonance while improvising. Though conceding that ·Jacob is " simple-minded" and that " the Spielmann's own direct narrative already makes the reader ambivalent about him," …

Existence And Alienation In Rilke's Notebooks Of Malte Laurids Brigge, Eva Merrett Friedman Apr 1981

Existence And Alienation In Rilke's Notebooks Of Malte Laurids Brigge, Eva Merrett Friedman

University of Dayton Review

The alienation of modern man and the enigma of existence have been the cynosure of modern philosophers and thinkers like Kierkegaard, Jaspers, Sartre, and Heidegger. Rainer Maria Rilke grapples with this existential question in the Notebooks of Malte Laurids Brigge. In these Notebooks, which are concerned with man and his destiny, Rilke the artist confronts reality and lays bare the crisis of existence. Man, stripped to his essence without his facade, is pitted relentlessly against his forlorn existence.

Kindheitsmuster In Context: The Achievement Of Christa Wolf, Mary Jane Lamse Apr 1981

Kindheitsmuster In Context: The Achievement Of Christa Wolf, Mary Jane Lamse

University of Dayton Review

In the fall of 1975 Christa Wolf read before the Akademie der Kunste der DDR excerpts from her yet unpublished but long-awaited massive autobiographical novel Kindheitsmuster. At the conclusion of the reading she spoke with her colleagues about the genesis of the novel. In this context she referred to an inci- dent which had occurred during the final days of the war. The memory of this incident, described in greater detail in Kindheitsmuster itself, had been lying dormant within her for many years. Joining the stream of refugees heading west before the advancing Russians, she and her family had …
