Investigation Of Electronic Holography Using Spice Computer Simulation Experiments, Monish Ranjan Chatterjee Dec 1985

Investigation Of Electronic Holography Using Spice Computer Simulation Experiments, Monish Ranjan Chatterjee

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Using SPICE experiments, it has been possible to verify most of the important aspects of electronic holography. The generation and properties of dynamic echoes under different types of nonlinearities have been extensively tested, and some new information has been garnered in the process. The case of pulse and generalized memory echoes has also been tested, and the results have been fairly satisfactory. Most of all, the simplicity with which the intriguing concept of memory echoes has translated into the circuit implementation on SPICE, and the closeness of the results to predicted behavior have been somewhat of a pleasant surprise.

From Admiration To Confrontation: Gunter Grass And The United States, Siegfred Mews Dec 1985

From Admiration To Confrontation: Gunter Grass And The United States, Siegfred Mews

University of Dayton Review

Gunter Grass is. without doubt, the best known representative of postwar and contemporary German literature in the United States. A few random samples culled from reviews of Grass's work in this country may suffice to illustrate this point. In 1964, on occasion of the English translation of Hundejahre (Dog Years), Newsweek wrote: "Gunter Grass today is acknowledged as the author who put postwar German literature back in the world market. He is fast becoming a director of much of his country's creative movement, a keeper of old myths and new methods." The Tin Drum, the novel that so …

The Epiphany In A Portrait Of The Artist As A Romantic Moment, Carl G. Herndl Dec 1985

The Epiphany In A Portrait Of The Artist As A Romantic Moment, Carl G. Herndl

University of Dayton Review

Collected on parchment leaves, extended as stories in Dubliners, defined in Stephen Hero, and embedded in A Portrait Of The Artist, Joyce's epiphanies have a long bibliographic and a confused critical history. Robert Scholes treats the epiphanies as a finite set of texts and argues that after Portrait Joyce outgrew them, using only one in Ulysses. Irene Hendry, on the other hand, argues in an early essay that Joyce had at least four "epiphany techniques" and that "Joyce's work is a tissue of epiphanies, great and small, from fleeting images to whole books, from briefest revelation in his …

The Revolutionist As Poet: The Prison Plays Of Ernst Toller, Ralph Ley Dec 1985

The Revolutionist As Poet: The Prison Plays Of Ernst Toller, Ralph Ley

University of Dayton Review

Ernst Toller was one of the best known dramatists in the Germany of the Weimar Republic. He was also almost certainly the most widely translated. His reputation rested largely on five plays written between the years 1917 and 1927, half of which time he spent behind bars as a political prisoner. As soon as the Nazis came to power, Toller, a socialist, a failed revolutionary, and a Jew, became a non-person. He remained relatively obscure until the middle 1960's, when the thaw in the cold war set in. With the growth of the New Left and the politicizing of West …

The Feuilleton Section Of The Cleveland German Language Newspaper Wachter Am Erie Between 1852 And 1864, Margaret Hampton

University of Dayton Review

The Wachter am Erie, founded in 1852, is the second oldest German language newspaper in Cleveland. It was started by two Forty-eighters, Jakob Muller and Louis Ritter. These two men found the other older German language newspaper in Cleveland too conservative and too dependent on the Democratic Party. They wanted to start a newspaper that would be free of party or church control, and one that would criticize political and social injustice. Muller and Ritter wanted to convince their readers of the importance of becoming involved in the politics of their adopted homeland and the importance of taking a position …

The Poetry Of Matthew Arnold: Nature And The Oriental Wisdom, Slyvia Bailey Shurbutt Dec 1985

The Poetry Of Matthew Arnold: Nature And The Oriental Wisdom, Slyvia Bailey Shurbutt

University of Dayton Review

"Ah, what pitfalls are in that word Nature!" wrote Matthew Arnold in Literature and Dogma. And what pitfalls have many modern scholars fallen into as they have attempted to discern what precisely that charged word meant to Victorian literature's most renowned critic. Ambivalent, inconsistent, confused, incompatible, incomprehensible-all are adjectives used at one time or another to describe Arnold's uses of the word nature. In his landmark study The Concept of Nature in Ninteenth-Century English Poetry, Joseph Warren Beach concludes that Arnold's references to nature in the abstract show a distinct confusion of attitude, at times deprecating nature …

"The Women Who Rode Away" And Lawrence's Vision Of The New World, Bibhu Padhi Dec 1985

"The Women Who Rode Away" And Lawrence's Vision Of The New World, Bibhu Padhi

University of Dayton Review

Lawrence's vision of a new world was at one time synonymous with America. The First World War had caused a chain reaction in his sensitive mind, which terminated in his deep distrust of all that the elderly statesmen of his time stood for; it produced in him a strong desire to "sail away from this world of war and squalor and found a little colony … which is established upon the assumption of goodness in the members, instead of the assumption of badness." In a letter that he wrote to Mark Gertler in 1918, he expressed his new feeling in …

Impressionist Characterization In Women In Love , George Klawitter Dec 1985

Impressionist Characterization In Women In Love , George Klawitter

University of Dayton Review

Writers with new techniques for creating prose often find themselves on the outskirts of critical acceptance, their voice attacked, their method questioned, their work disdained. Only a consummate belief in the validity of their experimentation and the joy of their own creative efforts keep such writers intent on championing their revolutionary language. D.H. Lawrence pioneered a new method of characterization in novels like Women in Love that elicited strongly negative criticism, but if his attackers had been sensitive to and appreciative of his earlier experiments with metaphoric prose, they might have understood sooner the genius of his methods. It was …

Blake's The French Revolution And The Bible, H. Summerfield Dec 1985

Blake's The French Revolution And The Bible, H. Summerfield

University of Dayton Review

Blake's poem The French Revolution (1791) has been studied as a transitional work in which the idiom and imagery of his mature prophetic books can be seen in their formative stage. Little attention, however, has been paid to the fairly numerous biblical allusions (other than those from Revelation) that the poem contains. An examination of some of these in relation to the content of earlier and later works will show that The French Revolution marks the point at which Blake turns against the legalistic and authoritarian aspect of the Old Testament while continuing to accept much of its prophetic element.

Erica Jong Revisited (Or) No Wonder We Men Had Trouble Understanding Feminism, Francis Baumli Dec 1985

Erica Jong Revisited (Or) No Wonder We Men Had Trouble Understanding Feminism, Francis Baumli

University of Dayton Review

It was 1974-ten years ago-and I knew I was not happy with my masculinity. Also, I knew there were not men around me with whom I could discuss what was happening inside of me. And all the feminists were telling me to get with it. They told me to read all the feminist literature I could get my hands on, attend all the feminist meetings-except, of course, the ones where men were not allowed, and acknowledge my role as an oppressor so I could help the world become a better place for women.

The Contrary Mr. Frost Of "West-Running Brook", R. F. Dietrich Dec 1985

The Contrary Mr. Frost Of "West-Running Brook", R. F. Dietrich

University of Dayton Review

This poem's philosophical quality has been the principal attraction for most critics, both to be praised and denigrated. Richard Poirier represents critics who disdain close reading of the poem because its philosophy is too explicit-"It is poetry written for an audience of literary clubs." But most critics find the philosophy difficult enough to warrant explication and paraphrase: unfortunately they confine their treatment mostly to the philosophic core of the poem and make little attempt to follow the poem's movement from point to point. But if the poem is followed through the shifting tensions and relaxations of a circuitous human relationship …

The View From The Edge: D.H. Lawrence's "Fish", Donald Gutierrez Dec 1985

The View From The Edge: D.H. Lawrence's "Fish", Donald Gutierrez

University of Dayton Review

D. H. Lawrence was a radical dualist who at times longed for oneness. This longing recurs in his writings in various guises:" 'it seems to me as a married couple makes one angel,'" states The Rainbow’s Tom Brangwen in an inspired and climactic moment during the wedding celebration of his daughter.

Confessions Of Love In Joyce's Portrait, John Hannay Dec 1985

Confessions Of Love In Joyce's Portrait, John Hannay

University of Dayton Review

Confessions of love, in varying forms, provide continuity within Stephen's changing allegiances from church to art in Joyce's A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. Part III culminates in Stephen's confession to a priest of sinful love, a pivotal moment that serves as a paradigm for Stephen's many earlier and later confessions, to laity as well as clergy. But the confessional mode, naturally a dominant influence on a young Catholic's efforts at self-expression, threatens to undermine Stephen's artistic detachment. In Part V, he criticizes art he calls kinetic-that is, art that arouses desire or loathing -and confession, …
