In recent years, several publications for archivists and librarians have centered on teaching with primary sources,1 usually archival and special collections materials. Yet, there is still ample room within the literature for Engaging Undergraduates in Primary Source Research, edited by Lijuan Xu. This collection of ten case studies builds upon previous literature, but a few characteristics set it apart from other works on the subject. Rethinking Reference Resources: Redesigning A Roman Catholic Reading Room, Henry M. Handley

In this presentation, audiences learned about how collection assessment, strategic collection development, and curation of art and books on display redesigned the reading room of an historically Roman Catholic special collection. Library workers sought to better represent the diverse faith traditions, scholarship, and creative activity the library supports and better serve the variety of researchers who use the space, from first-year undergraduates in library instruction sessions to faculty and independent researchers. The presentation asked audiences to consider the positionality of their own institutional public spaces and visible collections and to identify tools to facilitate radically welcoming, multidisciplinary learning in them.

Church Music Leaders In The Usa: Prioritizing Technical Competence And Inclusion, Heather Maclachlan

Church music leaders in the United States pursue two priorities: technical accuracy and fluency in the music-making of their church ensembles, and, including as many volunteers as possible in those same ensembles. At times, the prioritization of technical competence and inclusion conflict, because volunteers whose playing or singing is less than competent seek to be included in church music groups. Facing this ethical dilemma, church music leaders operate ethically; that is, they employ strategies and develop policies based on their understanding of their responsibilities to other people (Warren 2014). The Conservative Paradox And The Formation Of 5–4 Coalitions, Nicholas L. Georgakopoulos

This analysis springs from the need to resolve a paradox. The paradox is that 5–4 decisions from the post-World War II United States Supreme Court lean conservative—they are about 58% conservative. The explanation is that the median justice has tended to be ideologically closer to the next conservative justice than the next liberal justice. A coalition with the conservative wing has tended to be easier to form than with the liberal wing. The contribution is the comparison of three models of how 5–4 vote splits may occur.
