Marian Fellowships and Other Sponsored Research in the Marian Library

Jack Mulder, philosophy professor and philosophy department chair at Hope College in Holland, Michigan, received the 2023 Visiting Scholar Fellowship for his project centered on Marian philosophical theology, or as he calls it, philosophical Mariology. Mulder’s existing scholarship has brought about dialogue between Protestant and Catholic thinkers concerning the Blessed Virgin Mary through several particular Marian chapters in books he has authored.

Mulder spent several weeks at the Marian Library to work on a forthcoming book project.

Marian Fellowships and Other Sponsored Research in the Marian Library

Hsuan Tsen, a senior lecturer in the Department of Art and Design at the University of Dayton, received the 2023 Resident Scholar Fellowship in the Marian Library to continue research on visual exchanges between Japan and America in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Tsen’s research explores the work artist John La Farge produced in the wake of a trip to Japan in 1886.

La Farge was successful in his day, Tsen says, but his works are relatively unknown today.

Prior to embarking on this special issue, we had begun working on our own technical and vocational education and training (TVET) research project studying women’s upskilling in India. The Indian government demarcated women’s upskilling as an important initiative in their 12th five-year plan (an economic plan strategizing development and growth), which particularly remarked about the criticality of improving access while also notating the challenges and equity points that need to be worked on including economic empowerment and engagement in governance (Planning Commission, 2013). The pharmaceutical industry faces significant challenges in reducing energy consumption and carbon footprint due to its energy-intensive operations, particularly in Research & Development (R&D) facilities. This paper presents a case study of a comprehensive energy assessment conducted at a leading pharmaceutical R&D facility. The assessment aimed to identify energy use reduction opportunities to align with the broader corporate strategy of carbon footprint reduction. This study details the methodology, findings, and strategic implementation plan for enhancing energy efficiency and sustainability in pharmaceutical R&D operations.

However, their knowledges are typically missing from the literature or not shared cross-institutionally. While it is common for them to express a lack of discretion, many find avenues for invoking high impact practices common to street-level bureaucrats. In recent years, several publications for archivists and librarians have centered on teaching with primary sources,¹ usually archival and special collections materials. Yet, there is still ample room within the literature for Engaging Undergraduates in Primary Source Research, edited by Lijuan Xu. This collection of ten case studies builds upon previous literature, but a few characteristics set it apart from other works on the subject. First, Xu explains in the introduction that much of the existing literature within the archives and library fields focuses only on “the pedagogical significance of special collections and archives and tends to equate primary …

Rethinking Reference Resources: Redesigning A Roman Catholic Reading Room, Henry M. Handley

In this presentation, audiences learned about how collection assessment, strategic collection development, and curation of art and books on display redesigned the reading room of an historically Roman Catholic special collection. Library workers sought to better represent the diverse faith traditions, scholarship, and creative activity the library supports and better serve the variety of researchers who use the space, from first-year undergraduates in library instruction sessions to faculty and independent researchers. The presentation asked audiences to consider the positionality of their own institutional public spaces and visible collections and to identify tools to facilitate radically welcoming, multidisciplinary learning in them.
