Histogram Of Oriented Phase And Gradient (Hopg) Descriptor For Improved Pedestrian Detection, Hussin Ragb, Vijayan K. Asari Feb 2016

Histogram Of Oriented Phase And Gradient (Hopg) Descriptor For Improved Pedestrian Detection, Hussin Ragb, Vijayan K. Asari

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

This paper presents a new pedestrian detection descriptor named Histogram of Oriented Phase and Gradient (HOPG) based on a combination of the Histogram of Oriented Phase (HOP) features and the Histogram of Oriented Gradient features (HOG).

The proposed descriptor extracts the image information using both the gradient and phase congruency concepts. Although the HOG based method has been widely used in the human detection systems, it lacks to deal effectively with the images impacted by the illumination variations and cluttered background. By fusing HOP and HOG features, more structural information can be identified and localized in order to obtain more …

A Real-Time Information Based Demand-Side Management System In Smart Grid, Feng Ye, Yi Qian, Rose Qingyang Hu Feb 2016

A Real-Time Information Based Demand-Side Management System In Smart Grid, Feng Ye, Yi Qian, Rose Qingyang Hu

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

In this paper, we study a real-time information based demand-side management (DSM) system with advanced communication networks in smart grid. DSM can smooth peak-to-average ratio (PAR) of power usage in the grid, which in turn reduces the waste of fuel and the emission of greenhouse gas. We first target to minimize PAR with a centralized scheme. To motivate power suppliers, we further propose another centralized scheme targeting minimum power generation cost. However, customers may not be motivated by a centralized scheme since such a scheme requires total control and privacy from them. A centralized scheme also requires too much real-time …

Traumatic Brain Injury: Persistent Misconceptions And Knowledge Gaps Among Educators, Deborah Ettel, Ann E. Glang, Bonnie Todis, Susan C. Davies Feb 2016

Traumatic Brain Injury: Persistent Misconceptions And Knowledge Gaps Among Educators, Deborah Ettel, Ann E. Glang, Bonnie Todis, Susan C. Davies

Counselor Education and Human Services Faculty Publications

Each year approximately 700,000 U.S. children aged 0–19 years sustain a traumatic brain injury (TBI) placing them at risk for academic, cognitive, and behavioural challenges. Although TBI has been a special education disability category for 25 years, prevalence studies show that of the 145,000 students each year who sustain long-term injury from TBI, less than 18% are identified for special education services. With few students with TBI identified for special education, TBI is mistakenly viewed as a low-incidence disability, and is covered minimally in educator preparation. We surveyed educators and found that they lacked knowledge, applied skills, and self-efficacy in …

Our Daily Quest, University Of Dayton

News Releases

On a snowy night at the University of Dayton Fieldhouse in 1964, civil rights leader the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. spoke to a crowd of more than 6,200 on race relations in America, housing, his commitment to nonviolence and the power of unconditional love. The University will commemorate King's speech and honor his legacy in perpetuity with a memorial located near the Immaculate Conception Chapel and the Frericks Center, formerly the University of Dayton Fieldhouse, where King delivered the speech.

Flow Pattern Identification Of Horizontal Two-Phase Refrigerant Flow Using Neural Networks, Abdeel J. Roman, Paul J. Kreitzer, Jamie S. Ervin, Michael Hanchak, Larry W. Byrd

Office for Research Publications and Presentations

In this work, electrical capacitance tomography (ECT) and neural networks were used to automatically identify two-phase flow patterns for refrigerant R-134a flowing in a horizontal tube. In laboratory experiments, high- speed images were recorded for human classification of liquid–vapor flow patterns. The corresponding permittivity data obtained from tomograms was then used to train feedforward neural networks to recognize flow patterns. An objective was to determine which subsets of data derived from tomograms could be used as input data by a neural network to classify nine liquid–vapor flow patterns. Another objective was to determine which subsets of input data provide high …

Ranking: Perceptions Of Tied Ranks And Equal Intervals On A Modified Visual Analog Scale, Jerry Timbrook, William F. Moroney Feb 2016

Ranking: Perceptions Of Tied Ranks And Equal Intervals On A Modified Visual Analog Scale, Jerry Timbrook, William F. Moroney

Psychology Faculty Publications

This study examined a novel paper-based ranking system (called the BINS format) that was designed to address two limitations of traditional ranking formats. This new system allows respondents to: 1) assign ties to ranked alternatives and 2) indicate distance between ranked alternatives. Participants reported high satisfaction with the ability to express ties using the BINS format, and preferred to use a ranking format that allowed for ties over a format that did not. Two versions of the BINS format (a numbered continuum and an unnumbered continuum) were compared to examine participants’ perception of the distance between ranked alternatives. When a …

Teacher Blogging Redux: Post With Caution, Charles J. Russo, Marcus Heath

Educational Leadership Faculty Publications

In the December 2014 issue of School Business Affairs, this column (Russo 2014) addressed a case from Pennsylvania, Munroe v. Central Bucks School District (2014), that explored the free speech rights of public school teachers who blog on the Internet.

In Munroe, a school board in Pennsylvania dismissed a tenured high school teacher who posted controversial, derogatory remarks about her students and others on her personal blog. The Third Circuit subsequently affirmed that insofar as the blog entries were disruptive to school operations, the teacher’s dismissal did not violate the First Amendment (Munroe 2015).

Munroe highlights the need for school …

Critical Examination of Our Times: The State of Race on the University of Dayton Campus

The idea of a symposium on race developed within a historical context of several recent events, including the nationwide racial crises beginning with Ferguson, Missouri, in 2014, and the subsequent emergence of the Black Lives Matter movement. Amid these “headline” events was a lingering dissatisfaction of black students on the University of Dayton campus, a lack of understanding of America’s racial past, the experiences of black and white participants in the African immersion program, and my belief as faculty and coordinator of Africana Studies that we are not doing nearly enough to address the problems of race, privilege, diversity, and …

Alumni Presentation And Panel: Engaging The Past, V. Denise James, Victoria Berthé, Veronica Morris, Lashea Smith, J. W. Terry

Critical Examination of Our Times: The State of Race on the University of Dayton Campus

The Alumni Panel featured three black, Dayton-area, UD alumni: LaShea Smith, B.A. International Studies, 1991; Veronica Morris, B.A. Communications Management, 1992; and J.W. Terry, B.S. Business Economics, 2010, Master’s of Public Administration, 2013. The alumni offered insightful perspectives on UD and race from their positions as graduates, as local business people, and, for one, as the mother of a UD student graduating in May 2016. The panelists were asked to prepare a short set of responses to two questions: 1) What were your most salient experience of race at UD? 2) Now, as a graduate of the university, what reflections …

Why Martin Luther King’S Anti-Racism Crusade Needs To Be Renewed, Julius A. Amin

Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. was 39 years old when he was assassinated. Schools, streets and children are named in his honor in Africa. In America, he is honored with a public holiday.

All over the world, King is known as someone who fought for human causes. At a time when racial violence and arrogance in the US and elsewhere is experiencing a rapid resurgence, King’s holiday is a reminder that much needs to be done to create a more inclusive global community.
