Significant Recent Warming Over The Northern Tibetan Plateau From Ice Core Δ18o Records, W. An, S. Hou, W. Zhang, Y. Wang, Y. Liu, Shuang-Ye Wu, H. Pang

Department of Earth, Environment and Sustainability Faculty Publications

Stable oxygen isotopic records in ice cores provide valuable information about past temperature, especially for regions with scarce instrumental measurements. This paper presents the δ18O result of an ice core drilled to bedrock from Mt. Zangser Kangri (ZK), a remote area on the northern Tibetan Plateau (TP). We reconstructed the temperature series for 1951–2008 from the δ18O records. In addition, we combined the ZK δ18O records with those from three other ice cores in the northern TP (Muztagata, Puruogangri, and Geladaindong) to reconstruct a regional temperature history for the period 1951–2002 (RTNTP). The RTNTP …

A Steward's Adventures In China, Jason Demeter

Blog Archive: River Reflections at the University of Dayton

Two weeks ago, I arrived in Shanghai for a semester of study at the University of Dayton China Institute. Since I arrived, I’ve been kept busy absorbing as much of Chinese culture as possible, whether that takes the form of eating duck feet and pig brain or learning to speak the language. In addition to learning about the culture, I’ve also metaphorically (and literally) worn my blue RS shirt by observing the water here in China.

In 2013, the Marian Library received the papers of the late John S. Stokes Jr., co-founder of Mary’s Gardens, a Philadelphia organization that taught and encouraged the planting of devotional gardens in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mother. Active in civil rights and social justice movements, he was the director of the Wellsprings Ecumenical Center in Philadelphia. He died in 2007.

Among his papers was a collection of promotional brochures from a variety of religious orders. The University of Dayton Libraries have digitized them and made many of them available in eCommons, the University’s open-access institutional repository. In observance of …

Market Matters: How Market-Driven Is 'The Newsroom'?, Patrick Ferrucci, Chad Painter

Communication Faculty Publications

This study examines whether the award-winning news show The Newsroom depicted on HBO practices what John McManus defined as market-driven journalism. McManus posited that organizations practicing market-driven journalism compete in the four markets he describes in his market theory for news production. This study found that The Newsroom depicts an organization that does indeed practice market-driven journalism, with results interpreted through the lens of market theory for news production.

Multiclass Object Detection With Single Query In Hyperspectral Imagery Using Class-Associative Spectral Fringe-Adjusted Joint Transform Correlation, Paheding Sidike, Vijayan K. Asari, Mohammad S. Alam

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

We present a deterministic object detection algorithm capable of detecting multiclass objects in hyperspectral imagery (HSI) without any training or preprocessing. The proposed method, which is named class-associative spectral fringe-adjusted joint transform correlation (CSFJTC), is based on joint transform correlation (JTC) between object and nonobject spectral signatures to search for a similar match, which only requires one query (training-free) from the object's spectral signature. Our method utilizes class-associative filtering, modified Fourier plane image subtraction, and fringe-adjusted JTC techniques in spectral correlation domain to perform the object detection task.

The output of CSFJTC yields a pair of sharp correlation peaks for …

Task-Oriented Ankle And Foot Training For Improving Gait, Balance, And Strength In Individuals With Multiple Sclerosis: A Pilot Study, Cizelle Rodriques, Kurt Jackson, Joaquin Alberto Barrios, Lloyd L. Laubach, Kimberly Edginton Bigelow

Physical Therapy Faculty Publications

The purpose of this pilot study was to investigate the effects and feasibility of a task-oriented ankle and foot exercise program on gait, balance, and strength in 6 adults with mild to moderate disability from multiple sclerosis (MS). The subjects participated in an 8-wk task-specific home-based ankle and foot exercise program. Outcome measures included stance phase ankle joint torque and power, limits of stability, isometric and isokinetic ankle strength, gait speed, and the 12-item Multiple Sclerosis Walking Scale (MSWS-12). Five subjects completed the 8- wk intervention. Following training, there were significant increases in ankle power during early (38.1%) and late …

Theme: Mary’s Place in Today’s Church. Presenters:

Fr. Thomas Buffer Lecturer, University of Dayton, International Marian Research Institute: Mary and the Church: What We Can Learn from the Past When we talk about the Church, are we also talking about Mary to help others understand it better? If so, what is the best way to do it? What should we avoid? In this effort, the religious literature of the first eight Christian centuries, also known as the patristic era, can offer some helpful pointers for us in the 21st century. …
