Mary's Gardens At The University Of Dayton, Kayla Harris
Mary's Gardens At The University Of Dayton, Kayla Harris
Marian Library Faculty Publications
In the spring of 2017, the University of Dayton Libraries brought nature inside and brought a piece of history to life. In the first floor exhibit gallery a Mary garden was planted for visitors to enjoy, learn from, and reflect upon the Blessed Virgin Mary. A Mary garden is comprised of flowers and plants whose names describe an aspect of Mary’s life, her appearance, or her virtues. For example, prior to the Reformation Foxglove was commonly known as Our Lady’s Gloves. It was a means of storytelling – people could learn about Mary simply by looking at the nature surrounding …

Department of Earth, Environment and Sustainability Faculty Publications
Centennial‐scale, high‐resolution records of atmospheric dust conditions are rare in the arid and semiarid regions of central Asia, limiting our understanding of the regional climate and environmental changes and their potential driving forces. In this paper, we present an annually resolved atmospheric dust record covering the period of 1810–2004 A.D., reconstructed from an ice core retrieved at 4512 m above sea level from the Miaoergou Glacier in the eastern Tien Shan. The time series of dust flux for the past 195 years shows three periods of relatively low values (i.e., 1810–1829 A.D., 1863–1940 A.D., and 1979–2004 A.D.) and two periods …
Review: 'Embodied Philosophy In Dance: Gaga And Ohad Naharin’S Movement Research', Aili W. Bresnahan
Review: 'Embodied Philosophy In Dance: Gaga And Ohad Naharin’S Movement Research', Aili W. Bresnahan
Philosophy Faculty Publications
This book is an original and complex philosophy of dance that Katan (now Katan-Schmid) has extrapolated from a close examination of and studio-based engagement with Gaga, Ohad Naharin’s style of contemporary dance movement. It is culled from Katan’s first-hand experience as a participant in the training and as a researcher in conversation with Naharin and Gaga-engaged dancers. Gaga is both practiced alone as somatic movement research (one which studies internal, bodily perception and experience) and exhibited in dances that are choreographed by Naharin and other collaborators for the Batsheva Dance Company of Tel-Aviv, Israel. The philosophy provided here is organic …
Mechanisms In Ecology, Viorel Pâslaru
Mechanisms In Ecology, Viorel Pâslaru
Books and Book Chapters by University of Dayton Faculty
New mechanistic philosophy has not examined explanations in ecology although they are based extensively on describing mechanisms responsible for phenomena under scrutiny. This chapter uses the example of research on the shrub Lonicera maackii (Amur honeysuckle) to scrutinize individual-level mechanisms that are generally accepted and used in ecology and confronts them with the minimal account of mechanisms. Individual-level mechanisms are for a phenomenon, are hierarchical, and absent entities play a role in their functioning. They are distinguished by the role played by properties in determining activities and organization. The chapter also considers the experimental methods for discovery of individual-level mechanisms, …
