University Of Dayton Science Center Pendulum Swinging Again After Restoration And Repairs, Kassidy Lammers
College of Arts and Sciences Newsroom
A University of Dayton campus landmark since 1959, the Foucault pendulum in Sherman Hall is swinging again after several rounds of repairs in recent years. After decades of wear and tear, and a more recent alignment issue in 2020, faculty and staff restored the pendulum to working order during the summer.

What do you see when you look in the mirror? If you were on the other side looking back, in a land of opposites, how would your perception of reality be altered? Lewis Carroll’s Through the Looking Glass, and What Alice Found There reflect the larger truths that underscore our social experience in this constantly changing nonsensical world. Journey with us through a wonderland of mystery and delight while exploring who we were, who we are, and who we are yet to become in this dramatic …

A Comprehensive Exploration Of Regression Techniques For Building Energy Prediction, Vibhu Sharma
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Graduate Student Publications
This paper presents a detailed investigation into various regression techniques applied to predict building energy consumption. The dataset utilized in this study encompasses diverse attributes related to buildings, including size, location, usage type, construction materials, and energy consumption patterns, alongside weather-related data such as temperature, humidity, and precipitation. After preprocessing, which includes loading, inspecting, and imputing missing data, the dataset undergoes evaluation using regression techniques including Ridge Regression, Bayesian Ridge, Linear Regression, Orthogonal Matching Pursuit, Elastic Net, Huber Regression, Lasso Regression, and Passive Aggressive Regression. Evaluation metrics such as Mean Absolute Error (MAE), Mean Squared Error (MSE), Root Mean Squared …
Resampling And Super-Resolution Of Hexagonally Sampled Images Using Deep Learning, Dylan Flaute, Russell C. Hardie, Hamed Elwarfalli
Resampling And Super-Resolution Of Hexagonally Sampled Images Using Deep Learning, Dylan Flaute, Russell C. Hardie, Hamed Elwarfalli
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
Super-resolution (SR) aims to increase the resolution of imagery. Applications include security, medical imaging, and object recognition. We propose a deep learning-based SR system that takes a hexagonally sampled low-resolution image as an input and generates a rectangularly sampled SR image as an output. For training and testing, we use a realistic observation model that includes optical degradation from diffraction and sensor degradation from detector integration. Our SR approach first uses non-uniform interpolation to partially upsample the observed hexagonal imagery and convert it to a rectangular grid. We then leverage a state-of-the-art convolutional neural network (CNN) architecture designed for SR …

Fitz Hall’s Black Box Theatre & Live-Streamed
The night after a queer bar outside of Tampa, Florida is vandalized, three twenty-something bartenders gather to grieve, rage, and above all, piece together the events of the night before. Fiery and poetic, Laced ferociously celebrates the spaces in which we find our truest selves. In a time of renewed culture wars against queer youth, this play centers the voices of those intersectional identities we should be listening to now.

Masked Face Analysis Via Multi-Task Deep Learning, Vatsa S. Patel, Zhongliang Nie, Trung-Nghia Le, Tam Van Nguyen
Computer Science Faculty Publications
Face recognition with wearable items has been a challenging task in computer vision and involves the problem of identifying humans wearing a face mask. Masked face analysis via multi-task learning could effectively improve performance in many fields of face analysis. In this paper, we propose a unified framework for predicting the age, gender, and emotions of people wearing face masks. We first construct FGNET-MASK, a masked face dataset for the problem. Then, we propose a multi-task deep learning model to tackle the problem. In particular, the multi-task deep learning model takes the data as inputs and shares their weight to …

If I passed you in a coffee shop wearing a cat T-shirt and cat earrings, carrying a pocketbook covered with cat images — with matching wallet, (along with cat socks, but you couldn’t see that), wearing a baseball cap that says, "Cat Mom," holding onto a cat umbrella and wearing a cat mask, would you: A) Compliment my attire B) Compliment my attire and tell me about your cat C) Think, "What a weirdo!" D) Not notice.

Equality, Non-Interference, And Sovereignty: President Ahmadou Ahidjo And The Making Of Cameroon-U.S. Relations, Julius A. Amin
Equality, Non-Interference, And Sovereignty: President Ahmadou Ahidjo And The Making Of Cameroon-U.S. Relations, Julius A. Amin
History Faculty Publications
Scholars often dismiss the importance of local archives in the reconstruction of postcolonial African history, stating that they are superficial, unorganized, and unreliable. Amin challenges that notion and argues that those archives are central to the study of African diplomatic history. Based on extensive and previously unused documents, he argues that Cameroon’s Ahmadou Ahidjo leveraged his U.S. policy to develop his country and protect its sovereignty while maintaining a firm grip on power. This reappraisal of Ahidjo’s actions engages debates about the contours of U.S.-African foreign policy and the challenges new nations face as they navigate external relations.

A Unified Framework Of Deep Learning-Based Facial Expression Recognition System For Diversified Applications, Sanoar Hossain, Saiyed Umer, Vijayan K. Asari, Ranjeet Kumar Rout
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
This work proposes a facial expression recognition system for a diversified field of appli- cations. The purpose of the proposed system is to predict the type of expressions in a human face region. The implementation of the proposed method is fragmented into three components. In the first component, from the given input image, a tree-structured part model has been applied that predicts some landmark points on the input image to detect facial regions. The detected face region was normalized to its fixed size and then down-sampled to its varying sizes such that the advantages, due to the effect of multi-resolution …
