In a world which exhibits so much power and yet does so little to drive back underdevelopment, it is not to be wondered if the thinking endeavour is shrouded with the impression of being confronted with the greatest enigma, with the most disconcerting sphinx of all times. However, concerning this most pressing and controversial issue of underdevelopment, of all the disciplines which study man, philosophy is the one which until now said the least. Is this due to simple insensitiveness, or to pure neglect, or to the feeling of not being directly concerned? Whatever the reasons may be, the simple …

Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Several years ago at a flea market, I bought for fifty cents a dilapidated book entitled Steinbeck: A Life in Letters. Until that time, I had little interest in John Steinbeck, although I had a keen interest in reading diaries and letters. As I glanced through the book, I vaguely remembered reading Of Mice and Men in high school, and I'd seen the film version of Grapes of Wrath; that was the extent of my experience with Steinbeck. But my flea market purchase, a book of letters written by Steinbeck to friends, publishers, and other people he was acquainted with, …
The Joys And Responsibilities Of Being A Catholic Teacher, Louis Dupré
The Joys And Responsibilities Of Being A Catholic Teacher, Louis Dupré
Marianist Award Lectures
Louis Dupré uses his experience as a university professor to reflect upon the core principles of education, especially in a liberal arts setting. He outlines that a liberal education provides a medium through which spiritual legacies, contemplative minds, and moral truths are transmitted all through the sense of wonder held by the student and teacher. This, he says, is done especially well at the Catholic university.

Predictors Of Success In A Co-Correctional Halfway House: A Discriminant Analysis, Patrick G. Donnelly, Brian E. Forschner
Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work Faculty Publications
Considerable research and debate have focused on the effectiveness of community correctional programs. Much of the research does not address the issue of the effectiveness of programs for persons with different types of problems or criminal histories. This article utilizes discriminant analysis to determine the characteristics of persons most likely to succeed in one halfway house. The results indicate that strong socializing and integrating ties in the community and few previous contacts with the criminal justice system are major predictors of success in a halfway house program. The seven discriminators for females are used to accurately predict 87 percent of …
