Proofreading, editing, and critique, the customary assessment tools scientists use to evaluate professional journal articles, grant applications, and any other writing, can be applied equally well in introductory science instruction. Such feedback is, in fact, crucial to growth and development. When learning anything new, students and faculty alike rely heavily on sources other than themselves (‘external editors’) to assess their understanding as they develop self-assessment skills (or ‘internal editors’). Although they rarely describe it in these terms, faculty nonetheless assume that students have developed and refined their internal skills by the time they take examinations and write term papers. Unfortunately, …

Rethinking Our Rethinking Retrospectively: A Rejoinder To Spano, Mark Hickson Iii
Rethinking Our Rethinking Retrospectively: A Rejoinder To Spano, Mark Hickson Iii
Basic Communication Course Annual
After reading Spano's (1996) essay several times, I was struck by the title of the work in opposition to its substance. When I read "practical" approach in the title, I first thought that the discussion would progress (or regress) into the work of Watzlawick, Beavin, and Jackson (1967) and their "pragmatics," or perhaps even further back to the pragmatic philosophy of Peirce (Houser & Kloesel, 1992). However, nowhere in the paper did I find these works mentioned. As I reread the paper, I detected a vocabulary that was more reminiscent of phenomenology than pragmatism: "here-and-now," "situated communication action," "embodied persons," …

The Basic Course: A Means Of Protecting The Speech Communication Discipline, Charlene J. Handford
Basic Communication Course Annual
During the summer of 1995, Spectra included articles and news items regarding speech communication programs designated for elimination. Some leaders in the discipline warned that this trend would likely continue.
This article argues that departments of communication, operating under federal and state requirements for communication competency, may be well advised to work toward establishing the basic course as the sole fulfillment of their institutions' core requirement in communication and to plan a marketing strategy for their discipline. In addition, this paper suggests that the basic course, taught as public speaking, may be more easily defended in meeting the course requirement, …

The Story In Pictures: Roy Stryker And The Farm Security Administration Photography Project, Sean Wilkinson
University of Dayton Review
It would be difficult to identify a field with a more tenuous place in the academic community than photography. Barely 150 years old and already in imminent danger of becoming another casualty on the technological superhighway, photography has always had a hard time winning the respect that is typically awarded to its artistic antecedents. Of course, these days, that's not saying much anyway.
Photography is rooted in popular culture, and its apparent simplicity makes it seem acutely obvious and utterly ordinary; we all know what photographs are, don't we? If we think about photography at all, we are inclined to …

An Historian's View Of The Grapes Of Wrath, Janet R. Daly Bednarek
An Historian's View Of The Grapes Of Wrath, Janet R. Daly Bednarek
University of Dayton Review
While trying to watch Darryl F. Zanuck's film of John Steinbeck's novel The Grapes of Wrath with an historian's eye, several things jumped out at me. First, and least important really, was a sense that the people — the actors in the movie — were too clean, too well-fed and too pretty to be realistic. They did not look like the people I imagined when I first read the book. And, even though the film was in black and white, the scenery in the early scenes set in Oklahoma seemed too "green." Looking at all the grass and the trees …
