A Scoping Review To Inform Care Coordination Strategies For Youth With Traumatic Brain Injuries: Care Coordination Personnel, Cara Palusak, Brandy Shook, Susan C. Davies, Jennifer P. Lundine
Counselor Education and Human Services Faculty Publications
Introduction & Importance: Effective, patient-centered care coordination has been shown to improve outcomes for children with special healthcare needs (CSHCN), who often have complex, long-term involvement with multiple service providers. Traumatic brain injury (TBI) can result in long-term physical, intellectual, social, and emotional disabilities that persist long after acute treatment. Yet, even though it is a chronic condition, TBI remains an area with scarce standardization and research surrounding the complex, long-term care coordination need in this population. The purpose of this scoping review is to summarize current research on outcomes in CSHCN after implementation of care coordinators, whether individual or …

Building Community And Integrating Global Learning As A Remote Faculty Member In Ud’S Edd In Leadership For Organizations Program, Aryn Baxter
Learning Teaching Forum
The transition to teaching remotely requires intentional reflection on what it takes to develop and sustain a sense of community and connection when joining an institution from a distance.
In this session, I reflect and share lessons learned from my transition from working face to face as a faculty member and international programs administrator to working remotely as a faculty member teaching in the University of Dayton’s EdD in Leadership for Organizations program. This transition has entailed not only a shift from face to face to remote work, but also a prolonged reflection on a commitment to transformative global learning. …

A Scoping Review To Inform Care Coordination Strategies For Youth With Traumatic Brain Injuries: Care Coordination Tools, Brandy Shook, Cara Palusak, Susan C. Davies, Jennifer P. Lundine
Counselor Education and Human Services Faculty Publications
BACKGROUND: Children with traumatic brain injury (TBI) report unmet needs several years after their injury and may require long-term care. However, this chronic health condition is often only treated and monitored in the short-term. Care for young persons with TBI often relies on parents to manage their child’s complex care network. Effective care coordination can close these gaps and facilitate continuity of care for children with TBI. The purpose of this scoping review was to develop a better understanding of tools that improve care coordination for Children with Special Health Care Needs (CSHCN). This, in turn, can inform care for …

Patriotism, Pandemic, And Precarity: How The Alt-Right And White Nationalist Movement Used The Pandemic, Arthur J. Jipson
Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights
This workshop will explore how the so-called Alt-Right and White Nationalist movement used conspiracy theories around the origin and challenge of the COVID-19 Pandemic to recruit members, advance their causes, and create social and cultural discord in an effort to create legitimacy for their racist and white supremacist attacks on community. After a discussion of the current state of the Alt-Right and White Nationalist movement, the workshop will interrogate the various online tools used by these groups to attack and dismantle community and human rights initiatives. The workshop concludes with an interactive activity that helps participants explore how these efforts …

By taking a familiar egg drop activity in which students design a “nest” to protect a raw egg from a high fall and adding several class-conscious twists, a sociology professor illustrates the relationships to introduce students to the topic of social inequality and vulnerability.

Fitz Hall’s Black Box Theatre & Live-Streamed
The night after a queer bar outside of Tampa, Florida is vandalized, three twenty-something bartenders gather to grieve, rage, and above all, piece together the events of the night before. Fiery and poetic, Laced ferociously celebrates the spaces in which we find our truest selves. In a time of renewed culture wars against queer youth, this play centers the voices of those intersectional identities we should be listening to now.

Measuring Perceptions Of Various Forms Of Rehabilitation And Re-Entry Programs On Various Types Of Offenders And Reducing The Likelihood Of Recidivism: A Qualitative Study Of Criminal Justice Professionals In Ohio, Jasmine H. Riechmann
Honors Theses
Research suggests that rehabilitation and reentry programs reduce rates of recidivism for various types of offenders. The study, based on the constructivist paradigm, will use a phenomenological strategy to explain criminal justice professionals’ perceptions of rehabilitation and reentry programs. Participants with experience working with at-risk populations in Ohio were selected for inclusion in the study. Participant experiences and feedback were analyzed to answer the research questions posed in the study. Data collected from each interview and the researcher’s field notes were compared to identify themes.
The Communal Integration Of Nutrition-Related Cultural Assets Of The Latinx Population In The Greater Dayton Area, Hannah G. Waters
The Communal Integration Of Nutrition-Related Cultural Assets Of The Latinx Population In The Greater Dayton Area, Hannah G. Waters
Honors Theses
Due to a series of social determinants, the Latinx population currently living in the United States is suffering from a multitude of health disparities. Many of these disparities are nutrition-related, as the health issues that most disproportionately affect the Latinx population are obesity and diabetes. In order to treat these dietary-related health disparities, one must examine the complex aggregation of factors that work to influence specific dietary habits. Dietary habits are impacted by a series of individual, social and environmental factors. Moreover, in the case of Latinx nutrition, the level of acculturation, or cultural adjustment, plays a crucial role in …

School-Based Support For Foster Families: Understanding The Experiences And Needs Of The Biological Children Of Foster Parents, Lauren Smith
Graduate Student Showcase
The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of the biological children of foster parents while investigating suggestions for school-based supports. Following the phenomenological, qualitative method of research, ten participants ages 10-24, whose families chose to foster one or more children in their homes, were interviewed using a semi-structured interview protocol. Through a thematic analysis, themes emerged under two broad categories: Positive Experiences and Negative Experiences. Three specific recommendations for supports emerged from the data. The findings from this study can be used to inform school-based supports for the biological children of foster parents.

Pervasive Communal Trauma In Higher Education: The Effects Of Covid-19 Trauma On U.S. Higher Education Professionals, Shane Borah
Graduate Student Showcase
The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted campus life in a manner never before seen by higher education professionals causing them to adapt, reframe, and provide support to students in colleagues while navigating the unknown world of the pandemic themselves. To better understand the effect COVID-19 may have on higher education professionals, this study introduces a conceptual form of connective trauma experience in the form of communal pervasive trauma. This research study looked at: (1) How does COVID-19 affect higher education professionals’ relationship with their work? And (2) What effects does a pervasive communal traumatic experience, such as COVID-19, have on higher …
