Building Bridges To Math Success: Exploring Children’S Flexible Attention To Numerical And Spatial Magnitudes, Deja A. Richardson Apr 2025

Building Bridges To Math Success: Exploring Children’S Flexible Attention To Numerical And Spatial Magnitudes, Deja A. Richardson

Honors Theses

The study analyzes how children in early childhood engage with number books and how they influence mathematical abilities such as flexible attention to magnitudes (FAM) and executive functioning. It was hypothesized that the number of books consisting of mathematical language will lead to an increase in math ability. It was also suggested that number books will engage children using mathematical language and real-world settings. 80 participants between the ages of three and five years old recruited from daycare centers and preschools in the Dayton and Bloomington area will complete 6 one-on-one sessions with an experimenter in their school.

The pretest …

Examining The Causal Impact Of Prayer On Self-Control And Generosity, Angel R. Rivera-Martinez Apr 2025

Examining The Causal Impact Of Prayer On Self-Control And Generosity, Angel R. Rivera-Martinez

Honors Theses

Prayer is a behavior that is characteristic of most religions and spiritualities and a practice important to many people. Although many studies have looked at a wide variety of the possible outcomes and impacts of prayer on behavior and well-being, this research hopes to study the practice of prayer and its outcomes in a more theological lens. In the Bible, the Fruit of the Spirit outlines expected characteristics of a person or community living in accordance with the Holy Spirit. The two aspects of the Fruit that will be studied as variables within this experiment are self-control and generosity. The …

Gender In Math: The Short And Long Term Effects Of Bias In The Math Classroom, Kailey P. Peppard Apr 2025

Gender In Math: The Short And Long Term Effects Of Bias In The Math Classroom, Kailey P. Peppard

Honors Theses

There are many different narratives that are thrown around regarding math with little ill intent but with little regard to the serious impacts that the phrases can have. The one that will be focused on in this project is the idea that “math is a male subject” or that men are inherently better at math than women. This project will attempt to draw a connection between the narratives and the fact that there is a significant lack of women in STEM fields or pursuing higher level math. By reaching out to both students and teachers, the goal is to learn …

“Almond Moms” And Their Influence On College-Aged Emerging Adults: An Investigation On Eating Cognitions, Behaviors, And Psychological Wellness, Rebecca E. Sutton Apr 2025

“Almond Moms” And Their Influence On College-Aged Emerging Adults: An Investigation On Eating Cognitions, Behaviors, And Psychological Wellness, Rebecca E. Sutton

Honors Theses

The present study examines the potential psychological and behavioral impacts Almond Moms have on their college-aged children. Previous studies examining how parents influence disordered eating habits found that parental attitudes, specifically maternal attitudes, towards appearance, weight, and dieting are correlated with their children’s likelihood of engaging in disordered eating behaviors. It was hypothesized that college-aged students who report more experiences growing up with an Almond Mom will demonstrate more disordered eating habits and less positive body image. Impulsivity, socioeconomic status, and attachment were predicted to moderate the link between parental experiences and eating habits. Participants were recruited from introductory psychology …

Examining Gender And Race/Ethnicity Differences In Self-Esteem: A Birth Cohort Analysis Spanning 46 Years, Ella M. Donnelly Apr 2025

Examining Gender And Race/Ethnicity Differences In Self-Esteem: A Birth Cohort Analysis Spanning 46 Years, Ella M. Donnelly

Honors Theses

Self-esteem refers to the overall evaluation–positive or negative–that people have about themselves. Researchers have reported self-esteem to be increasing generationally among the general population. The purpose of the proposed study was to examine the association between race, gender, and self-esteem, to test whether levels of self-esteem vary based on one’s identity. Data from the University of Michigan’s Monitoring the Future study was analyzed to test for race and gender differences in self-esteem across generational cohorts. The Monitoring the Future Study questionnaire includes elements of the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale. Over 120,000 responses were collected from 12th graders between 1976 and 2022. …

Mothers Among The Stars: Unveiling The Complexities Of Princess Rosalina’S Maternal Role And Her Place In The Maternal Archetype, Johnathan D. Lehmann Apr 2025

Mothers Among The Stars: Unveiling The Complexities Of Princess Rosalina’S Maternal Role And Her Place In The Maternal Archetype, Johnathan D. Lehmann

Line by Line: A Journal of Beginning Student Writing

The assignment was to write a 6-8 page research paper that incorporates ideas of family in some way. I decided to write about Princess Rosalina from the Super Mario Franchise because of the maternal role she plays in the series. To create this paper, I synthesized information from multiple sources on family psychology and various Nintendo games to validate my argument. The Super Mario franchise (and the gaming industry at large) has a history of representing female characters through overexaggerated and harmful depictions, such as hyper sexualization and extreme helplessness. My desire to write about this topic increased when I …

Disney Movies: Harmful Or Harmless?, Maria K. Kozal Apr 2025

Disney Movies: Harmful Or Harmless?, Maria K. Kozal

Line by Line: A Journal of Beginning Student Writing

I wrote this essay in my ENG198 writing seminar in the fall semester of my first year at Dayton. In this class, we were prompted to write a research paper examining an issue surrounding gender. As a woman who has been impacted by gender roles through the media portrayed to me, I immediately knew I wanted this to be my subject of research. I dedicated hours to reading many different scholarly articles about how the gender roles presented in the media impacts a child's understanding of gender roles. I wrote several drafts of this essay, participated in peer revisions, and …

The Lessons Behind The Bedtime Story, Rachel Roell Apr 2025

The Lessons Behind The Bedtime Story, Rachel Roell

Line by Line: A Journal of Beginning Student Writing

This paper discusses the influence that picture books can have on perceptions of gender and societal expectations, first for children and later for adults. Elementary literature has become a controversial topic in recent years, as censorship has increased. There is a serious fear that children have ineffective and even harmful role models for their gender. I studied how picture books—for both young readers and the adults they will inevitably grow into—have lasting positive and negative impacts on how individuals perceive gender in relation to society and themselves. I evaluated scholarly sources, many of which involved studies that showed how children …

Exploring The Impact Of Echo Chambers On Modern American Polarization, Alex Burkhardt Apr 2025

Exploring The Impact Of Echo Chambers On Modern American Polarization, Alex Burkhardt

Line by Line: A Journal of Beginning Student Writing

This submission is a research report I wrote for my English 198 class. The topic of the report was "Obstacles to the Common Good." I originally wanted to write about the impact of presidential debates on increased political polarization, but my research led me discover a much more pressing issue facing our nation. After months of careful research and peer review, I arrived at the final product which you see today.

Beauty And The Beast (1991) And La Belle Et La Bête (1946): Contrasting Views Of Womanhood Across Varying Cultural Climates, Maddie R. Dietrichs Apr 2025

Beauty And The Beast (1991) And La Belle Et La Bête (1946): Contrasting Views Of Womanhood Across Varying Cultural Climates, Maddie R. Dietrichs

Line by Line: A Journal of Beginning Student Writing

In my english honors course, we are placed into different fairy tale "groups. My group was assigned Beauty and the Beast as the fairy tale we would be offering social commentary on for this essay assignment. I knew I wanted to primarily discuss gender and women's roles in my essay since Beauty and the Beast offers a lot of interesting avenues on what a woman's role is, particularly in the romantic and familial spheres. I chose two different film retellings of Beauty and the Beast for this paper. The first being La Belle et La Bete, a 1946 black and …

Oncology Rehabilitation in Practice

Purpose: Chemotherapy-induced polyneuropathy, also referred to as chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN), is a dose-dependent, neurotoxicity from known neuropathic agents (e.g., taxanes, platinums, and vinca alkaloids) causing damage to the peripheral nervous system. CIPN can present as sensory, motor, or autonomic symptoms, such as muscle weakness and balance impairments. Currently, there are no treatment or prevention methods for CIPN. The purpose of this case series was to assess the therapeutic effects of a high velocity resistance training (HVRT), or power training, in women diagnosed and treated for cancer, who presented with CIPN by measuring balance, functional performance, neuropathy, quality of life …

Ascending The Nonviolence Continuum: Sanjay Lal, Author Of Violence, Nonviolence, And Moral Worth, Meets Critics, Predrag Cicovacki, Jennifer Kling, Sanjay Lal, Danielle Poe Apr 2025

Ascending The Nonviolence Continuum: Sanjay Lal, Author Of Violence, Nonviolence, And Moral Worth, Meets Critics, Predrag Cicovacki, Jennifer Kling, Sanjay Lal, Danielle Poe

Philosophy Faculty Publications

In this author-meets-critics discussion, Sanjay Lal presents the main ideas of his book Violence, Nonviolence, and Moral Worth, arguing that nonviolence meets violence along a continuum where there are degrees of greater and lesser examples, including a wide range of examples that combine both tendencies. Lal defines nonviolence in terms of three components that emphasize attitudes over actions: (1) a willingness to not harm others, (2) wanting to facilitate the well-being of others, (3) and not sacrificing one's own moral worth. Three critics share their praises and concerns: Predrag Cicovacki challenges Lal to be more specific on the definition …

Orpheus, Spring 2025: Porchswing, University Of Dayton Apr 2025

Orpheus, Spring 2025: Porchswing, University Of Dayton

Orpheus: UD's Literary and Artistic Magazine

From Melina Blank, literary editor: Porchswing: According to Google, it’s “a swing on a porch usually made of wood leaving space for two people to sit and swing.” To Orpheus, it is the warm breath of familiarity that hums in one’s soul. The soul knows just about everything that inspires it, transfixes it, guides it. Home, a word we make sense of in terms of physical place, is not so definitively tangible. Instead, what inspires and transfixes and guides us could very well be a person, a song, a belief, a feeling.

If I didn’t know any better, I would …

A Geologist, A Photographer And A Theologian Walk Into The Woods: Wonder, Grief And Hope In An Old-Growth Forest In An Age Of Wildfire, Vincent J. Miller, Frederick J. Swanson, David Paul Bayles Feb 2025

A Geologist, A Photographer And A Theologian Walk Into The Woods: Wonder, Grief And Hope In An Old-Growth Forest In An Age Of Wildfire, Vincent J. Miller, Frederick J. Swanson, David Paul Bayles

Intersections of Science and Faith

In 2007, Catholic theologian Vince Miller had a sabbatical and went to the H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest in Oregon. In the late 1970s and early '80s, this is the place where the fundamental research was done that established old growth as a certain kind of ecological community. This emerged out of the fuel of forestry, which was largely concerned prior to that with harvest schedules and maximum sustainable yield. So, the research they did there, which was profoundly interdisciplinary, engaged the ecosystem across all sorts of disciplines. Out of that interdisciplinary work, it became a place that began to welcome …

Use Of Simulation In Dietetic Internships: A Qualitative Exploration Of Program Director Attitudes And Motivations, Theresa B. O'Reilly, Amy J. Nwora, Megan Whelan, Mary-Pat Maciolek

Journal of Dietetic Education

The use of simulation holds promise for the future of dietetics education for its use as an alternative for up to 30% of the 1,000 supervised practice hours for the training of Registered Dietitian Nutritionists. Even more so, simulation is a teaching tool. When done well, simulation can challenge students in a safe environment where they can receive constructive feedback from expert guides and meaningfully reflect on their learning. The purpose of this study was to interview dietetic internship (DI) program directors on their attitudes and motivations on the use of simulation in their programs, targeting the heavily program-congested states …

From Rags To Riches To Racist: President Andrew Johnson's Reputation Throughout History, Rebecca Schuster Jan 2025

From Rags To Riches To Racist: President Andrew Johnson's Reputation Throughout History, Rebecca Schuster

Line by Line: A Journal of Beginning Student Writing

This project was written as my main ASI 120 paper over the course of the 2024 spring semester. This historiography paper examines how historians have viewed secondary sources in the form of books, academic journals, and academic articles that I find from databases such as the UD library, Gale, JSTOR, and other academic resources. These sources range from pre-1960 to the 2010s and are divvied into three groups based on the author’s perspective of President Johnson. Group one, the Pro-Johnsons, are those who supported Johnson’s moves and are willing to deflect their believed failure of Reconstruction onto other scapegoats, such …

Classroom Phone Bans: A Needed Understanding, Douglas G. Thomas Jan 2025

Classroom Phone Bans: A Needed Understanding, Douglas G. Thomas

Line by Line: A Journal of Beginning Student Writing

This project, the final writing piece for my English 100 course, was a research and argumentative essay, specifically discussing the ever increasing number of mobile phone bans in educational settings and the ways they can be a benefit to students in the classroom.

This project involved a much research, especially when it came to finding academic journals and studies on the psychological effects of mobile devices on youth, and well as the potential benefits and consequences of phone bans. This research did not end when I started writing the piece, as I felt it beneficial to gather more substantial evidence …
