Whose Code Of Conduct Matters Most? Examining The Link Between Academic Integrity And Student Development, Ann E. Biswas

English Faculty Publications

Although most colleges strive to nurture a culture of integrity, incidents of dishonest behavior are on the rise. Towards Decrypting Attractiveness Via Multi-Modality Cue, Tam Nguyen, Si Liu, Bingbing Ni, Jun Tan, Yong Rui, Shuicheng Yan

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Decrypting the secret of beauty or attractiveness has been the pursuit of artists and philosophers for centuries. To date, the computational model for attractiveness estimation has been actively explored in the computer vision and multimedia community, yet with the focus mainly on facial features. In this article, we conduct a comprehensive study on female attractiveness conveyed by single/multiple modalities of cues, that is, face, dressing and/or voice; the aim is to discover how different modalities individually and collectively affect the human sense of beauty.

To extensively investigate the problem, we collect the Multi-Modality Beauty (M2B) dataset, which is …

The Challenges Of Being A Catholic School With Non-Catholic Students, Teachers, And (Gasp) Principals, Daniel Mulhall

Catholic Education Summit

Many Catholic schools today have students, teachers, and even principals who are not Catholic. This presentation will examine the role of the Catholic school as a catechizing community, explore some of the challenges that come with having non-Catholic students (and teachers and administrators), discuss how to engage everyone in the school’s Catholicity without proselytizing, and how to fully involve non-Catholic students in the religion classroom.

A Black And White Game: Racial Stereotypes In Baseball, Patrick Ferrucci, Edson C. Tandoc Jr., Chad Painter, Glenn Leshner

Communication Faculty Publications

The current study experimentally tested stereotypes and credibility of messages associated with athletes. Participants were asked to rate photos of black and white baseball players based on stereotypes identified in previous literature. They were then given an anonymous paragraph from a newspaper that featured either a stereotype consistent or inconsistent message and asked to rate the author's credibility. Black players were rated significantly higher in physical strength and natural ability, which is consistent with previous literature. However, inconsistent with previous literature, white players were not rated significantly higher in intelligence and leadership. Despite these results, when measuring credibility, this study …

An Examination Of Gender Differences In The Construct Validity Of The Silencing The Self Scale, Catherine J. Lutz-Zois, Lee J. Dixon, Alec M. Smidt, Jackson A. Goodnight, Cameron L. Gordon, Leigh Elizabeth Ridings Jul 2013

An Examination Of Gender Differences In The Construct Validity Of The Silencing The Self Scale, Catherine J. Lutz-Zois, Lee J. Dixon, Alec M. Smidt, Jackson A. Goodnight, Cameron L. Gordon, Leigh Elizabeth Ridings

Psychology Faculty Publications

Jack’s (1991) theory of self-silencing was originally designed to explain higher rates of depression in women in comparison to men. However, research finding that men score equal or even higher than women on measures of self-silencing has led theorists to speculate that self-silencing tendencies may be driven by different motivations and have different consequences for women versus men (Jack & Ali, 2010). Using a sample of 247 college students, we examined gender differences in the construct validity of the Silencing the Self Scale (STSS; Jack & Dill, 1992). We hypothesized that women would score higher on the Externalized Self-Perception subscale, …

Thresholds Of Knowledge Development In Complex Problem Solving: A Multiple-Case Study Of Advanced Learners’ Cognitive Processes, Treavor Bogard, Min Liu, Yueh-Hui Chiang, Yueh-Hui Vanessa Chiang

Teacher Education Faculty Publications

This multiple-case study examined how advanced learners solved a complex problem, focusing on how their frequency and application of cognitive processes contributed to differences in performance outcomes, and developing a mental model of a problem. Fifteen graduate students with backgrounds related to the problem context participated in the study. Data sources included direct observation of solution operations, participants’ think aloud and stimulated recalls as they solved the problem, as well as solution scores indicating how well each participant solved the problem. A grounded theory approach was used to analyze stimulated recall and think aloud data. A set of thirteen cognitive …

What To Do For Anxious Kids? Applications Of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (Cbt) In Schools, Elana R. Bernstein May 2013

What To Do For Anxious Kids? Applications Of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (Cbt) In Schools, Elana R. Bernstein

Counselor Education and Human Services Faculty Publications

Anxiety disorders are among the most common mental health problems in children and adolescents (Ollendick & Pincus, 2008). Epidemiological studies since 1986 have reported that, as a group, anxiety disorders are present in approximately 10% of the population of children ages 6-17 (McLoone, Hudson, & Rapee, 2006). Anxiety disorders have a high prevalence rate, an early onset, significant long-term consequences (Le., school drop-out, psychopathology in adulthood, difficulties with social relationships, lower self-esteem, etc.), and a chronic course if left untreated (Ramirez, Feeney-Kettler, Flores-Torres, Kratochwill, & Morris, 2006). However, youth suffering from anxiety disorders are not always adequately identified and provided …

Is Your School Prepared For A Sexting Crisis?, Morgan J. Aldridge, Susan C. Davies, Kelli Jo Arndt

Counselor Education and Human Services Faculty Publications

Sexting is a growing challenge. Results from a survey indicated that 20% of adolescents ages 13–19 have sent or posted nude or semi-nude pictures of themselves; 71% of adolescent females and 67% of adolescent males who have sexted sent the content to a boyfriend or girlfriend; and 38% of adolescent females and 39% of adolescent males report having seen messages originally intended for someone else (National Campaign, 2008).

Those messages can spread at a rapid rate, causing both legal and emotional ramifications for all students involved. Principals can help prevent sexting and mitigate its negative consequences by making staff members …

Navigating Body, Class, And Disability In The Life Of Agnes Burns Wieck, Caroline Waldron Merithew Apr 2013

Navigating Body, Class, And Disability In The Life Of Agnes Burns Wieck, Caroline Waldron Merithew

History Faculty Publications

The concerns expressed in Burns Wieck’s letter to Hapgood typify many of the issues that occupied her during the course of her life. She, like many Americans in the early twentieth century, thought that there were economic disparities as well as great cultural divisions between the working and middle classes in a capitalist system. Burns Wieck worried about how nature and environment shaped physical and emotional existence for her as a woman and as a worker.4 A question she asked about childbirth in her letter—“Why, oh why, can’t they find some way to humanize that experience?”—is one that she might …

Assembly Required: Christ's Presence In The Pews, William L. Portier Mar 2013

Assembly Required: Christ's Presence In The Pews, William L. Portier

Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications

When I attempt to articulate what I "get out of" going to church, I find myself increasingly emphasizing the real presence of Christ in the assembly. It has been almost 50 years since Vatican II, so it is well to recall what the council's Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy said in 1963 about that presence. It taught that in order to accomplish the work of salvation for which the Father sent him, Christ is always present in the church, especially in the church's liturgical celebrations.

Traumatic Brain Injury And Teacher Training: A Gap In Educator Preparation, Susan C. Davies, Emily E. Fox, Ann Glang, Deborah Ettel, Catherine Thomas

Counselor Education and Human Services Faculty Publications

This study examines the level of training provided on traumatic brain injury (TBI) in teacher training programs. Research has shown teachers lack knowledge about the consequences of TBI and about the related services students with TBI might require. Participants included faculty members in teacher training programs in the United States. The current study revealed very little formal training on TBI is provided in teacher training programs. If provided, TBI training was more likely to be found in special education classes than in general education settings.
