Link Voices Blog: Internment, Immigrant Detention, And The Imagined Imperiled Whiteness Of U.S. Citizenship, Miranda Cady Hallett

Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work Faculty Publications

The immigration and citizenship laws that prevail in the 21st century United States — as well as the enforcement of them — reflect Eurocentric racial hierarchies and help create and reproduce a white-majority nation.

While schoolchildren hold a basic understanding of how slavery and Jim Crow segregation produced persistent racial divides and inequality in U.S. history, they are far less familiar with the story of how the pervasive legal exclusion, marginalization, and persecution of Asian and Latin American immigrants (and birthright citizens with Asian or Latin American heritage) has played a key role in maintaining white dominance in the United …

Print Versus Digital: How Medium Matters On 'House Of Cards', Patrick Ferrucci, Chad Painter

Communication Faculty Publications

This study utilizes textual analysis to analyze how journalists are depicted on the Netflix drama House of Cards. Through the lens of orientalism and cultivation, researchers examine how depictions of print and digital journalism would lead viewers to see digital journalists as less ethical and driven by self-gain, while also viewing technology as an impediment to quality journalism. These findings are then discussed as a means for understanding how these depictions could affect society.

The Bible And Creationism, Susan L. Trollinger, William Vance Trollinger Jan 2017

The Bible And Creationism, Susan L. Trollinger, William Vance Trollinger

English Faculty Publications

Charles Darwin’s Origin of Species (1859) marked a significant challenge to traditional understandings of the Bible and Christian theology. Darwin’s theory of organic evolution stood in sharp contrast with the Genesis account of creation, with its six days, separate creations of life forms, and special creation of human beings. More than this, Darwin’s ideas raised enormous theological questions about God’s role in creation (e.g., is there a role for God in organic evolution?) and about the nature of human beings (e.g., what does it mean to talk about original sin without a historic Adam and Eve?)

Of course, what really …

The sources of violence can be broadly classified as natural, social, political, commercial, and technological. The classification of the sources, their respective roots, and associated impacts are presented in Table 4.1. Each of the sources of violence …

Prosocial/Civic Interests, Prosocial/Civic Behaviors, And Participation In The Arts, Donald J. Polzella Jan 2017

Prosocial/Civic Interests, Prosocial/Civic Behaviors, And Participation In The Arts, Donald J. Polzella

Psychology Faculty Publications

Executive Summary

A useful strategy for understanding the benefits of participating in the arts is to focus on audience members rather than on artists or performers (Brown & Novak, 2007). Previous research employing this strategy provided a framework for the present study. Polzella & Forbis (2013, 2014) used logistic regression to analyze data from 6257 households who took part in the 2008 Survey of Public Participation in the Arts (SPPA). Three pro-social behaviors (voting in the 2004 presidential election, making charitable donations or volunteering time, and attending community meetings) were regressed on what the NEA considers “traditional” music audience participation …
