Disney Movies: Harmful Or Harmless?, Maria K. Kozal Apr 2025

Disney Movies: Harmful Or Harmless?, Maria K. Kozal

Line by Line: A Journal of Beginning Student Writing

I wrote this essay in my ENG198 writing seminar in the fall semester of my first year at Dayton. In this class, we were prompted to write a research paper examining an issue surrounding gender. As a woman who has been impacted by gender roles through the media portrayed to me, I immediately knew I wanted this to be my subject of research. I dedicated hours to reading many different scholarly articles about how the gender roles presented in the media impacts a child's understanding of gender roles. I wrote several drafts of this essay, participated in peer revisions, and …

The Lessons Behind The Bedtime Story, Rachel Roell

Line by Line: A Journal of Beginning Student Writing

This paper discusses the influence that picture books can have on perceptions of gender and societal expectations, first for children and later for adults. Elementary literature has become a controversial topic in recent years, as censorship has increased. There is a serious fear that children have ineffective and even harmful role models for their gender. I studied how picture books—for both young readers and the adults they will inevitably grow into—have lasting positive and negative impacts on how individuals perceive gender in relation to society and themselves. I evaluated scholarly sources, many of which involved studies that showed how children …

The Refutation And Affirmation Of Gender Roles In Disney's 2017 Beauty And The Beast, Ashley Meyer Apr 2025

The Refutation And Affirmation Of Gender Roles In Disney's 2017 Beauty And The Beast, Ashley Meyer

Line by Line: A Journal of Beginning Student Writing

My writing process began with research. I looked into what topic I would like to discuss in relation to our project requirements of analyzing a fairytale movie. I knew that I wanted to dissect Disney's 2017 Beauty and the Beast movie so I moved forward with research on traditional gender roles that are present in the movie. Throughout my writing process I was able to receive feedback from my peers about each section of my writing. After a rough draft was finished I went back and reworked a couple paragraphs to make it flow better. I finished by submitting to …

Exploring The Impact Of Echo Chambers On Modern American Polarization, Alex Burkhardt

Line by Line: A Journal of Beginning Student Writing

This submission is a research report I wrote for my English 198 class. The topic of the report was "Obstacles to the Common Good." I originally wanted to write about the impact of presidential debates on increased political polarization, but my research led me discover a much more pressing issue facing our nation. After months of careful research and peer review, I arrived at the final product which you see today.

Beauty And The Beast (1991) And La Belle Et La Bête (1946): Contrasting Views Of Womanhood Across Varying Cultural Climates, Maddie R. Dietrichs

Line by Line: A Journal of Beginning Student Writing

In my english honors course, we are placed into different fairy tale "groups. My group was assigned Beauty and the Beast as the fairy tale we would be offering social commentary on for this essay assignment. I knew I wanted to primarily discuss gender and women's roles in my essay since Beauty and the Beast offers a lot of interesting avenues on what a woman's role is, particularly in the romantic and familial spheres. I chose two different film retellings of Beauty and the Beast for this paper. The first being La Belle et La Bete, a 1946 black and …

Space Food For Thought, Reid Miller

Line by Line: A Journal of Beginning Student Writing

For my two podcast episodes "Space Food for Thought" I had a few phases of development. I started by compiling a few ideas through researching various aspects of food in space. After doing initial research I narrowed my focus to two main subjects: space food from the past and the potential future of food in space. From here more research followed as I began to develop my script. It is here that I began to find sound-effects and reliable sources. Once the scripts were completed, I had a session of peer review to get the scripts in the best possible …

Ascending The Nonviolence Continuum: Sanjay Lal, Author Of Violence, Nonviolence, And Moral Worth, Meets Critics, Predrag Cicovacki, Jennifer Kling, Sanjay Lal, Danielle Poe

Philosophy Faculty Publications

In this author-meets-critics discussion, Sanjay Lal presents the main ideas of his book Violence, Nonviolence, and Moral Worth, arguing that nonviolence meets violence along a continuum where there are degrees of greater and lesser examples, including a wide range of examples that combine both tendencies. Lal defines nonviolence in terms of three components that emphasize attitudes over actions: (1) a willingness to not harm others, (2) wanting to facilitate the well-being of others, (3) and not sacrificing one's own moral worth. Three critics share their praises and concerns: Predrag Cicovacki challenges Lal to be more specific on the definition …

A Geologist, A Photographer And A Theologian Walk Into The Woods: Wonder, Grief And Hope In An Old-Growth Forest In An Age Of Wildfire, Vincent J. Miller, Frederick J. Swanson, David Paul Bayles

Intersections of Science and Faith

In 2007, Catholic theologian Vince Miller had a sabbatical and went to the H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest in Oregon. In the late 1970s and early '80s, this is the place where the fundamental research was done that established old growth as a certain kind of ecological community. This emerged out of the fuel of forestry, which was largely concerned prior to that with harvest schedules and maximum sustainable yield. So, the research they did there, which was profoundly interdisciplinary, engaged the ecosystem across all sorts of disciplines. Out of that interdisciplinary work, it became a place that began to welcome …

The Magnificat: Gen Z Spill The T Version, Neomi De Anda, Sabina Marroquin Feb 2025

The Magnificat: Gen Z Spill The T Version, Neomi De Anda, Sabina Marroquin

Chisme Symposium

As a group, we took multiple months to enact a vision Dr. Neomi De Anda, director of the International Marian Research Institute at the University of Dayton, had because of her research around chisme and spilling the T. The Spanish word chisme loosely translates as gossip in English, and the phrase “spilling the tea (or T)” is an American English slang phrase that means sharing gossip or revealing interesting news about someone.

While Gen Z has popularized this phrase in queer culture, specifically Black drag culture, the notion of "the T" is not simply a frivolous sharing of information, but …

Règlement De La Crise Anglophone Au Cameroun: Pourquoi L'État Refuse L'Aide Étrangère, Julius A. Amin

History Faculty Publications

Cameroon Could Do With Some Foreign Help To Solve Anglophone Crisis – But The State Doesn’T Want It, Julius A. Amin

History Faculty Publications

What began in late 2016 as a peaceful protest by lawyers and teachers in Cameroon’s North West and South West regions quickly turned violent and developed into what’s become known as Cameroon’s anglophone crisis. The protest was instigated by perceived marginalisation of Cameroon’s anglophone region, which makes up 20% of the nation’s 29 million people. The conflict has resulted in immense destruction and casualties. Cameroon’s military responded to the protest with arrests and torture. Voices that called for complete secession of the anglophone regions from the Republic of Cameroon gained momentum. They created a virtual Ambazonia Republic and an interim …

Generation Z: Influences On College Decision Factors And Regret Faced, Kaitlyn Uylaki Jan 2025

Generation Z: Influences On College Decision Factors And Regret Faced, Kaitlyn Uylaki

Line by Line: A Journal of Beginning Student Writing

I decided to write a research paper on this topic because I personally know people who have regretted their decision to attend a certain college, or college altogether, due various influences that had an impact on their college decision-making process. While many of my friends have regret that stemmed from social circumstances, specifically the partying habits of their peers, there were also a lot of complaints from the economic side of things. College can be expensive even with scholarships and financial aid, causing students to regret their decisions when they see how much debt they're in, causing unneeded additional stress. …
