Efficient Light-Induced Reactive Oxygen Species Production From A Cationic Mitochondrial-Targeting Bodipy Dye, Cynthia Bukirwa
Efficient Light-Induced Reactive Oxygen Species Production From A Cationic Mitochondrial-Targeting Bodipy Dye, Cynthia Bukirwa
Honors Theses
BODIPY dyes have demonstrated their effectiveness as photosensitizers due to their diverse reactivity and high selectivity. These dyes are highly versatile and can be modified to absorb light across the visible and infrared spectrum. This study introduces a red light-activated BODIPY dye capable of subcellular localization within the mitochondria, yielding high quantum yields of reactive oxygen species (ROS). The potential of this dye to serve as a photodynamic therapy (PDT) agent highlights its promise as an organelle- targeted phototherapeutic. The synthetic route for this dye, along with its characterization and evaluation through 1H NMR, electronic absorption spectroscopy, and fluorescence spectroscopy, …
Conduct, Discipline, And Punishment: Representations Of Early Modern Women In Shakespeare's The Taming Of The Shrew And Much Ado About Nothing, Madeleine E. Onderak
Conduct, Discipline, And Punishment: Representations Of Early Modern Women In Shakespeare's The Taming Of The Shrew And Much Ado About Nothing, Madeleine E. Onderak
Honors Theses
In early modern England (the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries), women’s natures and preferred conduct were frequently discussed in pamphlets, essays, ballads, and conduct manuals. This research project examines how early modern women are represented in William Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew and Much Ado About Nothing and the implications of such characterizations. Early modern literature defines virtuous women as good housewives, obedient, patient, chaste, wise, and pious; they should avoid vanity and submit to men. Early modern depictions of the ideal woman were influenced by the virtues emphasized in Christianity and Classical history and mythology. Women were encouraged to …
Ethical & Effective Federal Artificial Intelligence Policy, Liam J. Row
Ethical & Effective Federal Artificial Intelligence Policy, Liam J. Row
Honors Theses
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the defining achievement of our time, processing vast amounts of data, generating intelligent outcomes, and enhancing our efficiency. As such, AI has the potential for both great benefits and significant harms. First, I reviewed the five most significant and immediate problems posed by AI. After recognizing the problems, I conduct in-depth analysis on the current regulatory structures of the federal government. I examine seven different departments as well as certain state and international regulatory structures to determine what harms are already addressed, where the gaps exist, and where the new policy is necessary. Then, I briefly …
“Almond Moms” And Their Influence On College-Aged Emerging Adults: An Investigation On Eating Cognitions, Behaviors, And Psychological Wellness, Rebecca E. Sutton
“Almond Moms” And Their Influence On College-Aged Emerging Adults: An Investigation On Eating Cognitions, Behaviors, And Psychological Wellness, Rebecca E. Sutton
Honors Theses
The present study examines the potential psychological and behavioral impacts Almond Moms have on their college-aged children. Previous studies examining how parents influence disordered eating habits found that parental attitudes, specifically maternal attitudes, towards appearance, weight, and dieting are correlated with their children’s likelihood of engaging in disordered eating behaviors. It was hypothesized that college-aged students who report more experiences growing up with an Almond Mom will demonstrate more disordered eating habits and less positive body image. Impulsivity, socioeconomic status, and attachment were predicted to moderate the link between parental experiences and eating habits. Participants were recruited from introductory psychology …
Investigating Macrophage Interactions With Listeria Monocytogenes Grown Under Different Conditions, Patrick J. Hurst
Investigating Macrophage Interactions With Listeria Monocytogenes Grown Under Different Conditions, Patrick J. Hurst
Honors Theses
Listeria monocytogenes is a Gram-positive, intracellular pathogen responsible for the deadly foodborne illness listeriosis. It is known to express different virulence factors in response to different environmental factors, influencing how the pathogen interacts with the host immune system. From food packaging to digestion, L. monocytogenes is exposed to many different environmental conditions. My honors thesis research focused on two conditions—cold storage and the presence of antimicrobial food additives—and how these conditions affect immune responses against L. monocytogenes. One of the first immune defenses that L. monocytogenes encounters in the body is the phagocytic macrophage. Macrophages can exhibit different shapes or …

Mothers Among The Stars: Unveiling The Complexities Of Princess Rosalina’S Maternal Role And Her Place In The Maternal Archetype, Johnathan D. Lehmann
Line by Line: A Journal of Beginning Student Writing
The assignment was to write a 6-8 page research paper that incorporates ideas of family in some way. I decided to write about Princess Rosalina from the Super Mario Franchise because of the maternal role she plays in the series. To create this paper, I synthesized information from multiple sources on family psychology and various Nintendo games to validate my argument. The Super Mario franchise (and the gaming industry at large) has a history of representing female characters through overexaggerated and harmful depictions, such as hyper sexualization and extreme helplessness. My desire to write about this topic increased when I …
Disconnected Connections, Becket Nash
Disconnected Connections, Becket Nash
Line by Line: A Journal of Beginning Student Writing
This long and arduous process began during the second week of classes when Dr. Rahman had us identify and describe an obstacle to the common good. I first thought about writing on wars and conflict, but later switched to something a little closer to home: relationships, namely how cell phones can impede our ability to form and maintain them. We were then tasked with writing a research proposal, an annotated bibliography, and a summary of peer-reviewed research. Through all of this, I looked over dozens of documents and articles learning all I could about cell phone addiction. I first created …
