Doc 2007-04 (Amended) Revision To University Honors Program, University Of Dayton. Student Academic Policies Committee

Senate Documents

Action: Legislative Concurrence

Revised 17 November 2023; Approved 26 September 2008

The University Honors Program (UHP) was founded over 40 years ago. Since then, the program has adapted and changed with the times. In 2017, 2018 and 2020 a number of changes to admissions criteria were made in consultation with ECAS. For clarity and ease of reference, the UHP requests that the current procedures replace the out-of-date 2007 document, and future changes receive formal approval by the Academic Senate through Legislative Concurrence.

The following proposal reflects current UHP practice since summer 2020, with one change from the current policy that …

The Transition To A Renewable Energy Electric Grid In The Caribbean Island Nation Of Antigua And Barbuda, Patrick Hoody

Honors Theses

The present study outlines the development and implementation of a computer model for Antigua and Barbuda's national electricity system, a dual-island nation in the Caribbean. The primary objective of this research is to investigate the cost-effective integration of renewable energy sources, including solar photovoltaics (PV), wind, and in the most novel contribution to the study, concentrating solar power (CSP). In addition to these technologies, the study explores the potential of battery and hydrogen energy storage to facilitate the transition towards 100% renewable electricity generation and the reduction of carbon emissions. This thesis is not solely a theoretical endeavor; it also …

Unity As Resistance To The Unreliable Narrator, Jairus Hallums

Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights

According to the 2017-2018 National Center for Education Statistics, nearly 80% of American public elementary and secondary school educators are White, leaving Black, Hispanic, Native American (and Indigenous) and bi-racial educators to make up the remaining 20%. Additionally, according to the United States Census bureau, the racial makeup of the United States is expected to become more diverse, particularly in the Black and Latinx racial groups (Vespa, et al., 2020). Knowing the American P-12 public education system educates the majority of the United States’ children, several questions arise as to the capacity of educators to “do no harm” to Black …

23rd Annual Kenneth C. Schraut Memorial Lecture: Languages, Alphabets, And Group Theory, Gizem Karaali

Undergraduate Mathematics Day: Programs, Lectures, Promotional Materials

In 1960 Eugene Wigner wrote a now-famous article titled The Unreasonable Effectiveness of Mathematics in the Natural Sciences. In 1993, the homophonic quotient groups for French and English (the quotient of the free group generated by the French (respectively English) alphabet determined by relations representing standard pronunciation rules) were explicitly characterized. In this talk, we will explore the mathematical and philosophical connections between these two works. Mathematically I will describe how my colleagues Herbert Gangl, Woohyung Lee (PO’15) and I, native speakers of three quite different languages, applied the methodology proposed in 1993 to our three language systems: German, Korean, …

Perceptions Of Young African Scholars’ Migration From Africa To The Global North: A Case Of Selected Kenyan Universities, Anne David, Enock Magack Masaki Nov 2023

Perceptions Of Young African Scholars’ Migration From Africa To The Global North: A Case Of Selected Kenyan Universities, Anne David, Enock Magack Masaki

Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights

As the old adage says, ‘East or West Home is best’, that may not be so true for the young African adult. Despite Africa being a very rich continent in its culture as well as physical resources and beautiful weather to a large extent, most of the African youth who live in Africa always dream of a life abroad. So much so that the thought of migrating to the West, either the United States of America or Europe seems to offer the once in a life time solution to all their problems. This is so real that many risk death …

Transforming Gender Norms In Rural Mali By Opening Spaces For Action, Kelly Bohrer, Anna Taft, François Chauvet, Kessia Kouriba, Hawa Yalcouyé, Moussa Tembine

Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights

Communities in the Tommoguiné Region of Mali are actively pursuing development despite economic challenges, insecurity, and isolation from many opportunities. Historically, the marginalization of women and girls has held back some of these efforts and denied certain rights to some of the population. Currently, a transformation of norms surrounding women’s roles in public life and of practices harmful to women and girls is taking place, inspired by a Women’s Literacy, Leadership, and Enterprise program generated through a transnational collaboration between local communities, a Malian linguistic association, and The Tandana Foundation, a Dayton-based non-profit organization. Instead of reinscribing colonial dynamics, this …

Judicial Activism As A Pathway To Environmental Justice In Africa’S Mining Industry: The Case Of Nigeria And South-Africa, Onyekachi Eni Dr, Dr. Ngozi Chinwa Ole Nov 2023

Judicial Activism As A Pathway To Environmental Justice In Africa’S Mining Industry: The Case Of Nigeria And South-Africa, Onyekachi Eni Dr, Dr. Ngozi Chinwa Ole

Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights

Africa’s mining industry embodies the tension between socio-economic development, and environmental protection. On account of their abundant mineral resource endowments, Nigeria and South-Africa constitute Africa’s mining hub with the attendant environmental burdens evident in the distortion of natural environmental equilibrium, disruption of ecosystem services and dislocation of the people from their cultural moorings contrary to extant global and regional instruments on development and human rights. Notwithstanding the negative externalities of mining, the incidence of poverty and the absence of basic amenities in many mining communities often combine to frustrate the effort of mining-affected persons to obtain redress for the violation …

The Elevator Only Goes Up, Jordan Mitchell

Life in Letters: A Typographic Poster Exhibition Featuring Paul Laurence Dunbar

Dimensions: 30 inches wide, 36 inches tall
Inkjet on matte paper, printed on both sides

Artist's narrative: This letter takes Paul Laurence Dunbar back to when he was not proud of his work. In high school, he thought all of his writing was one big joke. He could not afford much, which led to him being forced to take a job as an elevator hopper. In the end, it was a situation that should be seen as a positive. When talking in the elevator with people, he was able to learn how they spoke and put it into his writing. …

Artist's narrative: Can one experience extreme joy and fear simultaneously? In Letter 62, Dunbar writes to William D. Howells to express his gratitude for the praise he received in Harper’s Weekly. Howells was a prominent Ohioan publisher, editor, and writer during Dunbar’s time. His review of Dunbar’s Majors and Minors is attributed as a major step in Dunbar’s career, as it awarded the Daytonian poet with great recognition. However, though Howell’s article portrayed Dunbar as a great and talented artist, it also painted his race …

Chapter Ii — Survey Of Ethiopia’S Survival: Definition And Controversies, Messay Kebede Oct 2023

Chapter Ii — Survey Of Ethiopia’S Survival: Definition And Controversies, Messay Kebede

Ethiopian Modernization: Opportunities and Derailments

The last chapter has unraveled the close link between modernization and the emergence of a survival ethos among ruling elites of traditional societies in transition. To approach the case of Ethiopia’s modernization from the same angle of explanation, it is necessary first to make sure that some groups among Ethiopian ruling elites had shown a propensity that could be defined as a salvational will. Sure enough, any ruling elite wants to protect the social order that benefits it. However, the salvational will, as defined in the previous chapter, is less the desire to perpetuate the status quo than the will …

Chapter Iii — The Ethiopian Forces Of Survival, Messay Kebede Oct 2023

Chapter Iii — The Ethiopian Forces Of Survival, Messay Kebede

Ethiopian Modernization: Opportunities and Derailments

To account for the protracted endurance of Ethiopia, the last chapter hinted at two requisites, namely, a system of power suited for defense and the sense of shouldering a mandate. Such a successful record, in addition to presupposing a robust and effective ability for self-defense, necessitates a leadership that feels entrusted with a mission. From a cursory examination of Ethiopian history, one can confidently surmise that, at least until the overthrow of the last emperor, Ethiopia survived for so long thanks to a system of power that was protective of survival and bearer of a mission. The system rested on …

The study sheds light on a new and intriguing historical perspective of the Peace Corps’ meaning and significance. It examines Volunteers’ service in countries including Nigeria, Ghana, Togo, and Guinea, showing how the agency transitioned from a …
