Investigation Of Negative Refractive Index In Reciprocal Chiral Materials, Monish Ranjan Chatterjee, Partha P. Banerjee, Pradeep R. Anugula Aug 2006

Investigation Of Negative Refractive Index In Reciprocal Chiral Materials, Monish Ranjan Chatterjee, Partha P. Banerjee, Pradeep R. Anugula

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

It is well known that there exist both natural materials (such as milk or sugar solution) possessing chiral (or handed) properties, as well as an increasing list of man-made materials (such as sodium bromate) that exhibit chirality. One of the principal properties of chirality is that light of any arbitrary polarization, when propagating through a chiral material, splits up into two circular polarizations propagating in different directions. In the past decade or longer, researchers have investigated electromagnetic transverse (plane) wave propagation across a non-chiral/chiral interface, and determined the electromagnetic Fresnel coefficients for such propagation. Traditionally, such coefficients are derived under …

Nicaragua: Bamboo Testing Efficiency Of Wood Burning Stoves, Joseph Paulsen, Chris Helm Aug 2006

Nicaragua: Bamboo Testing Efficiency Of Wood Burning Stoves, Joseph Paulsen, Chris Helm

ETHOS Technical Reports

Chris Helm and Joseph Paulsen traveled to Managua, Nicaragua from May 12, 2006 to July 7, 2006 to volunteer in a research capacity for Proleña Ecofogón, an ecologically conscious wood burning stove manufacturer. The focus was to determine efficiencies of bamboo testing with a traditional model stove, construct and test several brick stoves with smaller capacities, and investigate wood burning deep fryers. A new firebox was designed that greatly improved the use of space efficiently while maintaining a rigid geometry. In addition, several field studies were completed to determine a quantitative efficiency in operation and a qualitative aesthetic and safety …

Interacting With Web Hierarchies, Saverio Perugini, Naren Ramakrishnan Jun 2006

Interacting With Web Hierarchies, Saverio Perugini, Naren Ramakrishnan

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Web site interfaces are a particularly good fit for hierarchies in the broadest sense of that idea, i.e. a classification with multiple attributes, not necessarily a tree structure. Several adaptive interface designs are emerging that support flexible navigation orders, exposing and exploring dependencies, and procedural information-seeking tasks. This paper provides a context and vocabulary for thinking about hierarchical Web sites and their design. The paper identifies three features that interface to information hierarchies. These are flexible navigation orders, the ability to expose and explore dependencies, and support for procedural tasks. A few examples of these features are also provided

Reconstructing How We Respond To Student Writers: An An Exploratory Study, Bryan Bardine Apr 2006

Reconstructing How We Respond To Student Writers: An An Exploratory Study, Bryan Bardine

English Faculty Publications

This study sought to answer a number of questions. First, how do teachers respond to “successful” and “unsuccessful” writers? Also, how are these responses different? Furthermore, how did the distribution of the types of comments the teachers used affect student understanding of the comments? For instance, were certain types of comments understood more often than others, and what might be the results of such occurrences for student writers? Another objective of this research was to see how well the participating students understood the comments written on their essays, and to determine if there was any difference between how the “successful” …
