Baseball: Defense Or No?, Jacob D. Stemmerich
Baseball: Defense Or No?, Jacob D. Stemmerich
Undergraduate Mathematics Day: Past Content
Defense wins championships, or so they say. How do baseball organizations find the right defenders to win games? FanGraphs has published a series of metrics that teams throughout Major Leage Baseball use to quantify players’ fielding prowess. Baseball analysts use Wins Above Replacement, WAR, to predict who should be the league most valuable player, MVP. This uses defensive metrics to quantify how many runs the player produces when the team wins. The paper will discuss the metrics that already exist, and the technology that has been developed to analyze these metrics and other measurements of a player’s defensive skills.

Joyce Durham Essay Contest in Women's and Gender Studies
The cover of a popular 1918 American song, "Keep the Home Together, Mother, Thaf s All We're Fighting For/' suggested that the main goal of World War I was to protect and sustain the home.1 It depicted three women from all different generations sitting at a kitchen table. One is reading and two are working on a sewing project. A small black cat meanders nearby this domestic scene. This image placed an emphasis on gendered spatialization-women are at home performing traditional women's work, such as sewing and maintaining the home, while men are outside performing men's work, such as fighting …

Magic Polygons And Their Properties, Victoria Jakicic, Rachelle Bouchat
Undergraduate Mathematics Day: Past Content
Magic squares are arrangements of natural numbers into square arrays, where the sum of each row, each column, and both diagonals is the same. In this paper, the concept of a magic square with 3 rows and 3 columns is generalized to define magic polygons. Furthermore, this paper will examine the existence of magic polygons, along with several other properties inherent to magic polygons.

‘A Place of Passage’: Supplemental materials
This book explains the story behind the artwork in the first-floor central corridor of St. Mary's Hall.
Students and faculty in a Department of Art and Design practicum course — called Ligature Studio — worked for almost two years on the project, which was completed in January 2019. The holistic design concept aimed to honor the physical and spiritual passage of individuals through time through one of UD’s oldest facilities.

There is now a sizable body of scholarship on the relationship between human rights and literature. James Dawes suggests that the work of human rights is largely a matter of storytelling ("Human Rights in Literary Studies"). Joseph Slaughter contends, in turn, that "literary works and literary modes of thinking have played important parts in the emergence of modern human rights ideals and sentiments, as well as in the elaboration of national and international human rights laws" ("Rights" xiii). More specifically, in her oft-cited Inventing Human Rights, Lynn Hunt argues that contemporary human rights thought derives from the rise of …

In spite of advances in object recognition technology, handwritten Bangla character recognition (HBCR) remains largely unsolved due to the presence of many ambiguous handwritten characters and excessively cursive Bangla handwritings. Even many advanced existing methods do not lead to satisfactory performance in practice that related to HBCR. In this paper, a set of the state-of-the-art deep convolutional neural networks (DCNNs) is discussed and their performance on the application of HBCR is systematically evaluated. The main advantage of DCNN approaches is that they can extract discriminative features from raw data and represent them with a high degree of invariance to object …

Background/aims: In an investigator-initiated, prospective study, we evaluated the feasibility of a five-gene sequence point-of-care (POC) testing strategy (Xpert CARBA-R Assay, Cepheid Inc., Sunnyvale, CA, USA), compared to reference laboratory PCR (48 – 72 hours turnaround time, two gene sequences), in patients undergoing endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) and in a hospital outbreak investigation.
Methods: After informed consent, patients undergoing ERCP (September 2015 – April 2016, n = 191) at Mayo Clinic and potential hospital contacts (n = 9) of an index carbapenem-resistant organism (CRO)-positive inpatient were included. Two rectal swabs, one each for reference and POC assays were obtained. The …

Promoting Transition To Postsecondary Education: Creating Opportunities For Social Change, J. Christopher Linscott, Carey Busch
Journal of Research, Assessment, and Practice in Higher Education
Multiple studies document that students with disabilities participate at significantly lower rates than their peers without disabilities in post-secondary education, post-school employment, independent living, and community participation. This article exposits a program model at Ohio University, Gateway to Success, which addresses this inequity through a combined effort of various stakeholders. Particular consideration is given to evidence based predictors related to post-school success, the need for intervention, and the social justice implications of increased participation in post-secondary education for students with disabilities.

Electronic Anonymous Communications: Considerations For Higher Education Administrators, Sandra C. Coyner, Peggy L. Mccann
Journal of Research, Assessment, and Practice in Higher Education
Communications via electronic technology have expanded to encompass daily life for most higher education students, faculty, staff, and administrators. The Pew Research Center reports that nearly 100% of undergraduate and graduate students access the Internet (Smith, Rainie, & Zikuhr, 2011). Computers, cell phones, and tablets are an integral part of university life and student communications using social media websites, text messaging, online chat, and websites are widespread. Electronic communications can be categorized as websites, application, or social media. A subset of these electronic communications, characterized as anonymous, may present a particular challenge to those working in higher education institutions. Created …
Grounded Practical Theory To Improve Persistence-Retention Strategic Enrollment Management, Kenneth W. Borland Jr.
Grounded Practical Theory To Improve Persistence-Retention Strategic Enrollment Management, Kenneth W. Borland Jr.
Journal of Research, Assessment, and Practice in Higher Education
The author introduces grounded practical theory (GPT) as a useful research approach in the field of strategic enrollment management (SEM) and its focus on persistence-retention. The GPT approach is then illustrated by engaging sample voices of persistence-retention and SEM; scientific theory (the philosophical level) and normative theory (the technical level) as observed in the literature. The scientific theory voices and normative theory voices are then positioned in relation to voices of students and practitioners (observed respondents) who have identified real world persistence-retention and SEM problems. These problems suggest implications for reconstructing the relationship between persistence-retention and SEM philosophical, theoretical, and …

On our drive to school, my daughter and I listened to a celebrity interview on the radio. The objective was to quiet their growling tummies so they could get back to work, not obsess over food choices.
