Accommodating (Global–Glocal) Paradoxes Across Event Planning, Michael Duignan, Milena M. Parent, David Mcgillivray

Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

The aim of this research note is threefold: 1) to introduce the concept of paradox and its numerous applications to the study and management challenges associated with the planning and delivery of events, with a specific look at large-scale events like the Olympics to provide an extreme case; 2) to present a new paradox entitled the "Global–Glocal Paradox" that interrogates how inherent global and local stakeholder interests and tensions are managed; and 3) to present a series of conceptual and practical ways events can "accommodate" as opposed to "resolve" this paradox to help balance stakeholder interests instead of pitting one …

Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Obojobo is a learning platform that was created and maintained at the University of Central Florida. It was maintained by an individual employed by the university and maintenance of the platform did not continue after their departure from the university. As time progressed and federal accessibility standards were updated, the platform moved out of compliance. As a result, the content was removed from Obojobo, updated to meet existing accessibility guidelines, and rehomed in Webcourses. This is an archive of the original content.

Diamond's Hidden Gems - Scholarly Communications, Diamond R. Williams

Libraries' Documents

True to its nature as a public research university (a university that drives discovery and advancement), UCF places heavy emphasis on research. This occurs particularly during a student's college career, in which we are encouraged to get involved with projects that draw our attention.

UCF does not leave us on our own in these ventures, however, offering resources and assistance throughout the entire research process. One such resource is the Office of Scholarly Communications.

What Makes Travelers Choose Japan Over Other Destinations: The Application Of Customer-Based Brand Equity Theory And Tourism Xenophilia, Midori Yamazaki

Graduate Thesis and Dissertation 2023-2024

Customer-based brand equity (CBBE) has been extensively applied to examine a variety of travelers' behavioral intentions and tourism destination choices. However, from the perspective of competition among destinations, the use of the overall destination brand equity (ODBE) dimension is still in its experimental stage. The objective of this research is to determine the impact of destination brand awareness (DBA), image (DBI), quality (DBQ), and value (DBV) on ODBE. Specifically, this study focuses on the case of Japan tourism from the view of American travelers. Moreover, this study aims to incorporate tourism xenophilia (TXI), which is an emerging concept in tourism …

Diamond's Hidden Gems - Textbook Affordability, Ucf Libraries, Diamond Williams

Libraries' Documents

The cost of textbooks and course materials is a significant but often overlooked barrier to affording a degree. Being able to afford your textbook could be the difference between dropping a course and taking as many as possible. UCF's Textbook Affordability Initiative is designed to minimize the cost of course materials for students while maintaining quality and respecting academic freedom.

There's just one problem: few of us even know this program exists. Below, I give you everything you need to know to find out what free textbooks are available to you!

Diamond's Hidden Gems - Academic Engagement, Diamond Williams, Ucf Libraries

Libraries' Documents

The recent reopening of the third floor of the John C. Hitt Library has been long anticipated by students. In addition to containing new seating, study rooms, and Genesis (a colorful stained glass window you can relax in front of - I highly recommend it), the third floor also contains the Academic Engagement Suite. The Academic Engagement Suite houses librarians who are there to teach students how to use resources available through the library and provide one-on-one consultations for research assistance.

If you'd like to schedule an in-person or virtual research consultation, visit the Appointment page on the Libraries' Schedule …

Diamond's Hidden Gems - Journals Vs. Articles, Diamond Williams, Ucf Libraries

Libraries' Documents

With so much focus on research and academic writing in our college careers, there is one vital piece of information that is rarely ever brought up: the types of scholarly documents. While this may seem like elementary information for some of you, I doubt most of us entered college knowing about periodicals. Below, I provide a run-down of all the terminology you need to know to make your research much easier.

  • A periodical is any publication that comes out regularly or occasionally.
  • A magazine is a periodical with a popular focus, aimed at the general public, and containing news, personal …

International Coastal Cleanup: A Wave Of Change, Declan Ridgeway, Alexander Lavin, Julia Kruger, Luke Flajole

High Impact Practices Student Showcase Fall 2023

The Service-Learning Marine Conservation and Restoration class organized and planned an International Coastal Cleanup that was held at Canaveral National Seashore on September 23, 2023. We operated educational tables that allowed for community engagement and provided an understanding of the presence of microplastics in the ecosystem. The team created promotional posters to inform the public about the event and what would be taking place throughout the day. We shared these posters in our spheres and garnered interest from those in the UCF community and abroad. We had the opportunity to remove harmful debris throughout many crucial habitats of the Canaveral …

The Theater Studies in Creative Drama project at UCF aimed to explore and implement Drama-Based Instruction (DBI) in education, with a specific focus on creating a lesson plan for children in hospitals. The project began by delving into the significance of play in childhood and its connection to theater. Through interdisciplinary collaboration with UCF nursing students, the team crafted a dynamic lesson plan, incorporating theatrical elements to enhance the educational experience for young patients. Advent Health Downtown Orlando Heroes, Madisyn M. Burchfield

High Impact Practices Student Showcase Fall 2023

My service-learning project that I partnered with Advent Health Downtown Orlando to join in accomplishing is synonymous to their mission: extending the healing ministry of Christ. While volunteering with Advent Health and the city of Orlando, I was able to work with patients from all works of life alongside the hardest working healthcare professionals that I call the heroes of downtown Orlando. The biggest act of love and support you can give to this world is serving one another with your time- which is exactly what Advent Health does. While volunteering with Advent, I was given the opportunity to shadow …

Excess Body Weight And It’S Association To Diabetes Mortality Among Florida Adults, Shivanie M. Sharma

High Impact Practices Student Showcase Fall 2023

“Excess Body Weight and Its Association to Diabetes Mortality” is a topic that has been highly studied and researched. However, there has yet been a study that looks at excess body weight and its association to Diabetes Mortality among Florida Adults. Specifically, by utilizing data from the Florida Health Charts. This includes the analyzation by Person (Florida Blacks versus Whites), Place (Florida counties), and Time (rate of diabetes mortality though the years in Florida). This study further provides information on the idea of the “obesity paradox.” But, it also sheds light on the implications and limitations based on previous epidemiological …

Shepherd's Hope, Rory J. Fall Jan 2023

Shepherd's Hope, Rory J. Fall

High Impact Practices Student Showcase Fall 2023

I did my service learning project at a nonprofit called Shepherd’s Hope. Shepherd’s Hope works to provide free healthcare to uninsured individuals. During my time there I fulfilled the roles of the front desk. This involved me checking in and checking out patients into the online patient manager. I also helped discharge patients, giving them their paper prescriptions and notes from the doctor. While there I learned about the impact of having no insurance can have on a family, or an individual, and how stressful that can be. I also witnessed the wide range of patients that came into the …

Improving Educational Access, Quality, And Environment In Rural Intabazwe, South Africa, Divya Joshi

High Impact Practices Student Showcase Fall 2023

Despite the rapid modernization and urban development in South Africa in the 20th and 21st centuries, many of the country’s citizens in its rural and underdeveloped areas struggle with meeting their basic needs such as food security, sanitation, and education due to mismanagement of resources and government corruption. Through my Service-Learning Project, I aimed to try to lessen these disparities through targeting educational access, quality, and environment in the rural town of Intabazwe, South Africa. For access to education, I wanted to have a menstrual product drive since millions of South African girls miss a large part of …

Serving With Serv, Parker Maron, Bryce Ballard Jan 2023

Serving With Serv, Parker Maron, Bryce Ballard

High Impact Practices Student Showcase Fall 2023

Our project’s goal is to share our experience of volunteering with SERV; an environmental service organization located in Seminole County whose mission is to clean and restore local waterways and parks. Some of the things we did with them range from removing trash at local park to getting down and dirty, planting native water plants at a lake in order to slow and prevent shore erosion. These events SERV held showed us the benefit of serving our community: it made sure community areas stayed clean, that local lakes would stay healthy for the public to enjoy, and allowed us to …

Crossing The Bridge, Vivyana C. Joseph Jan 2023

Crossing The Bridge, Vivyana C. Joseph

High Impact Practices Student Showcase Fall 2023

The purpose of my project was to discover the meaning of service leadership first-hand in my hometown community. I chose to do so by working with my former high school's graduating class in order to help prepare them for possible post-grad. options. I did so by giving workshops, sharing my own experiences, and giving a tour of the UCF main campus, a possible route some of them may take. While leading these students through the college prep. process, I learned that providing them with various resources was much more useful and "necessary" than I had origionally thought. I was glad …

Knight-Thon, Yael Litwak Jan 2023

Knight-Thon, Yael Litwak

High Impact Practices Student Showcase Fall 2023

Knight-Thon is something I have been passionate about since the beginning of my experience at UCF. I discovered Knight-Thon through my sister, who had been involved during her college years, and soon followed her footsteps to become involved. I discovered this passion through my sorority's team and am now serving on an Impact Team to further my time, support and involvement in Knight-Thon. I have learned so much about the operations, behind the scenes with the Orlando Health Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children, and working and meeting the miracle families. I have loved my time getting to further my love …

Exploring English As A Foreign Language (Efl) Saudi Arabian Teachers' Perceptions Vis-A-Vis The English Education Context In Primary And Secondary Schools, Mona Abdullah A. Al Mogeerah

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

The education system in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is given a great deal of attention by the government as it is keen to provide an educational system that caters to teacher and student needs. Because English has the potential to provide access to resources that may facilitate advancement in science and technology, it is difficult to deny or underestimate the importance of the English language in Saudi Arabia. Despite the history of EFL teaching and resources allocated to the teaching of English in Arabia, the quality of Saudi students' English language skills has raised many concerns. Saudi students currently …

Decolonized Femininity And Post-Colonial Trauma Autobiographies: Reading Adriana Páramo, Julia Alvarez, And Azar Nafisi Through 'Scriptotherapy', Nicole Suárez Jan 2023

Decolonized Femininity And Post-Colonial Trauma Autobiographies: Reading Adriana Páramo, Julia Alvarez, And Azar Nafisi Through 'Scriptotherapy', Nicole Suárez

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

This thesis investigates testimonies of three female authors from Latin America and the Middle East through scriptotherapy narratives which "give voice to previously repressed memories," defined by Sidonie Smith and Julia Watson. Through the genre of autobiography, women have an opportunity to showcase acts of resistance towards the inner turmoil of colonial trauma that has been brought upon their existence. Decoloniality re-integrates the roots of colonial power into re-invigorated narratives that will become lineage. The only way that they can create their own identity is through "legending," Gilles Deleuze's conceptualized theoretical framework, which does not offer an escape from colonialism …

Body-Image Distress In Breast Cancer Survivors And Their Evaluation Of Medical Tattooing Following Surgery, Miranda Proctor Jan 2023

Body-Image Distress In Breast Cancer Survivors And Their Evaluation Of Medical Tattooing Following Surgery, Miranda Proctor

Graduate Thesis and Dissertation 2023-2024

A review of the literature reveals a high incidence of body-image distress among breast cancer survivors who have undergone surgery, which is a natural response to the significant changes in their appearance. Reconstructive surgery, utilizing implants or flaps, may be employed to restore breast size and shape. Medical tattooing can simulate the nipple-areola complex and decorative appliques can conceal scars and skin color variations. Both reconstructive surgery and medical tattoos are associated with patient-reported satisfaction, yet further research is necessary to understand their combined impact on body-image distress. To investigate this, a survey was distributed among national breast cancer support …
