A Computer Simulation Of A Weapons Fire Simulator Modeled By Sceptre As An Optical Communication Channel, John James Cormack Jan 1976

A Computer Simulation Of A Weapons Fire Simulator Modeled By Sceptre As An Optical Communication Channel, John James Cormack

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This paper presents a method of simulating various noise sources in a Weapons Fire Simulator System which has been modeled as an Optical Communication Channel. This Weapons Fire Simulator System is composed of laser transmitters mounted on weapons that fire blank cartridges, and laser receivers mounted on targets. The laser transmitter sends out 'kill' beam pulses to the target whenever blank cartridges are fired. Detection of these pulses at the target signifies a 'hit'. The entire system along with the optical communication channel is simulated in a general purpose computer program called SCEPTRE. This analysis package is an efficient means …

Analytical And Experimental Investigation Of Thermosyphon Solar Hot Water Systems, William E. Clark Jan 1976

Analytical And Experimental Investigation Of Thermosyphon Solar Hot Water Systems, William E. Clark

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

A computer simulation of a thermosyphon system allowing load drawoff and non-ideal weather conditions has been developed. The model is restricted to the more common single cover, flat plate collector system. Using an analysis based on the present literature, this model calculates the energy absorbed by the collector, the temperature distribution through the system, and the corresponding flow rate. Experimental data for a non-ideal day is compared to the computer simulation. Results of this comparison indicate that the desired parameters, flow rate, collector inlet and outlet temperatures, and the mean tank temperature can be predicted by this model to within …

Torque-Speed Linearization Of A D.C. Servo System, Nicholas A. Mantello Jan 1976

Torque-Speed Linearization Of A D.C. Servo System, Nicholas A. Mantello

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

In early 1973 Professor Fred O. Simons Jr., of Florida Technological University, suggested the topic for this research report. During control engineering discussions, it was proposed that a D.C. Shunt Motor could be constrained to perform in an idealized sense for the static case. The purpose of this report is to provide a reasonably comprehensive examination of a control which linearizes the torque-speed relationship of a dc servo system. The fundamental goal is to determine a control which linearizes the torque-speed output relation of a system, in which a dc shunt motor is under basic armature control. Consequently, the emphasis …

Vapor Phase Oxidation Of Chloropropenes Over Heterogeneous Catalyst Systems, Tim Ellis Owen Jan 1976

Vapor Phase Oxidation Of Chloropropenes Over Heterogeneous Catalyst Systems, Tim Ellis Owen

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Propylene Dichloride (PDC) is a byproduct of several Dow processes. The thermal cracking of PDC produces 1-cis-chloropropene, 1-trans-chloropropene, 2-chloropropene, and allyl chloride . By oxidizing the l- and 2-chloropropenes to 3- and 2- chloroacrylic acids, respectively, a potentially valuable product could be made. The chloropropenes, air, and steam were passed over various heterogeneous oxidation catalyst systems to attempt this oxidation. Contact time was varied between 0.0951 to 0.915 sec. Temperature was varied between 275C to .25C. The air content of the feed was varied between .1 to 75%. The chloropropene content of the feed was varied between 2.9% to 5.0% …

A Diffraction Model For Prediction Of Radar Signal Attenuation By A Rocket Exhaust Plume, Douglas Harrison Sphar Jan 1976

A Diffraction Model For Prediction Of Radar Signal Attenuation By A Rocket Exhaust Plume, Douglas Harrison Sphar

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This report documents the development of a method of estimating the signal attenuation induced by a rocket exhaust plume. The method is applicable to the early system design phase of high energy solid propellant rockets that produce highly ionized exhaust plumes. The method is based on the premise that when a plume is highly ionized, observed signal levels can be explained by assuming the signal propagates around the plume. A simple diffraction at a straight edge model is developed and compared to measured data. The report also provides an overview of exhaust plume electromagnetics and surveys prediction techniques.

A Comparative Study Of Forecasting Techniques For The Us Air Force Medical Material Management System, Phillip John Van Ess Jan 1976

A Comparative Study Of Forecasting Techniques For The Us Air Force Medical Material Management System, Phillip John Van Ess

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

A computer simulation experiment was conducted to evaluate and compare five individual forecasting models across nine different demand patterns. The models were based on the Medical Materiel Management System used by the US Air Force hospitals. Results indicated the best model varied depending on the demand pattern, the safety stock level, the noise level of the demand pattern, and the measure of forecast error. Across all demand patterns, exponential smoothing and 12-month moving average were best for the short term forecast used by the system, regardless of noise level in the demand patterns. Analysis of models within a single demand …

Thermal Control Of An Electronic Enclosure Utilizing A Vapor Chamber, Michael L. Dougherty Jan 1976

Thermal Control Of An Electronic Enclosure Utilizing A Vapor Chamber, Michael L. Dougherty

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This thesis addresses the problem of extracting heat from sealed electronic enclosures. Typical industry practice is to use various air-to-air and air-to-liquid heat exchangers. These techniques are known to require costly custom designs. This thesis points out how one can apply heat pipe technology in the form of a vapor chamber to solve this type of problem. The details on the design and testing of two prototype vapor chambers are cited. Included in the text are typical industrial applications that require sealed enclosures to protect their associated electronic control hardware. Also mentioned is some historical background on heat pipes.

Sewer System Design For Camp Challenge And Determination Of Per Capita Wastewater Flows From Vacation Facilities, William C. Goucher Jan 1976

Sewer System Design For Camp Challenge And Determination Of Per Capita Wastewater Flows From Vacation Facilities, William C. Goucher

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

A sewer system was designed for Camp Challenge of the Florida Easter Seal Society, in Mount Plymouth, Florida, of polyvinyl chloride piping. Invert elevations were tabulized and necessary fittings determined for the system. Cost estimates were also included. The sewers were designed on a per fixture basis so as not to overdesign using per capita flow rates. A literature and records search was conducted to obtain design and actual wastewater flow quantities in gallons per capita per day (gpcd). Actual flows determined from 4 camps and 11 travel trailer parks gave average values of 39 and 33 gpcd, respectively, and …

An Industrial Wastewater Treatment Review For The Textile And Pulp And Paper Industries Of Srilanka, Kolonne A. Wijeratne

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

A legislative authority empowered to protect Srilanka's environment, operating similarly to the Environmental Protection Agency of the U.S., is needed, along with wastewater treatment. Wastewater parameters of importance in treatment are BOD, COD, total suspended solids, settleable solids, pH, colour, turbidity, ammonia or nitrate nitrogen, heavy metals, sulfides, phosphates, and phenols. Methods of industrial waste treatment vary depending on the climatic conditions, the industry, raw materials, and process adopted. Textile and pulp and paper industries exist in Srilanka and have very high pollution potential. Methods of treatment to finally generate reasonably good quality effluent are available. Processing of effluents from …

Carbon Removal Of Organohalides In Drinking Water, William Ray Mccurley

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Drinking water samples provided by Orlando Utilities from various locations and from Florida Technological University were analyzed for organohalides. Compounds tentatively identified were 0.0024 mg/l DDT, 0.003 mg/l phosdrin, 0.00036 mg/l BHC, and 0.000095 mg/l endosulfan. These concentrations are well below recommended limits for drinking water. Two water samples were mixed with 10 mg/l of 20-40 mesh granular activated carbon, agitated for 2 minutes and then allowed to settle in the flask for 45 minutes. A reduction in the organohalide concentration varied from 25 to 98 percent of the original concentration. Also, a solution of seven common pesticides of 0.1 …

Dynamic And Stability Characteristics Of An Articulated Frame Railway Passenger Truck, David Kenneth Platner Jan 1976

Dynamic And Stability Characteristics Of An Articulated Frame Railway Passenger Truck, David Kenneth Platner

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Mass transit vehicles in formal rail service frequently attain speeds which can excited carbody oscillations (primary hunting), as well as sustained lateral oscillations of the trucks (secondary hunting). The carbody motions have been shown to generate passenger discomfort and sustained truck hunting can lead to derailment. This thesis developed approximate equations which predict the carbody hunting frequencies, as well as the hunting speed of an articulated frame truck. The linear equations of motion are derived from a simplified model of a railway vehicle. A comparison indicates the results obtained using the approximate truck hunting equation presented here are within ten …
