Crossover Of The Spectral Weight Function: A New Interpretation Of Some Neutron-Scattering Data, Lee Chow, David Fisher Jan 1988

Crossover Of The Spectral Weight Function: A New Interpretation Of Some Neutron-Scattering Data, Lee Chow, David Fisher

Faculty Bibliography 1980s

Dynamic scaling theory proposed by Halperin and Hohenberg has been successfully applied to small-q neutron scattering data in the past. However, recent constant-E-scan neutron scattering data cannot be explained by dynamic scaling theory and a Lorentzian spectral weight function. This seeming contradiction can be removed by a crossover of the spectral weight function from a Lorentzian function to a Gaussian function as q becomes large.

Impulse-Response Of A Multiaperture Vision System Eyelet, Ron Driggers, Carl Halford, Roy Walters Jan 1988

Impulse-Response Of A Multiaperture Vision System Eyelet, Ron Driggers, Carl Halford, Roy Walters

Faculty Bibliography 1980s

Multiaperture vision systems are of interest in the area of robotic vision. A facsimile of the insect eye may be as useful for transmitting information to robotics as conventional cameras, which are analogous to the human eye. A physical model of one multiaperture vision system, the insect apposition ommatidia, has been successfully constructed. To provide an understanding of the multiaperture vision system, the impulse response of a single eyelet, or ommatidium, was developed. Experimental measurements of the impulse response were found to closely match theoretical results.

Automatically Generating Syntax-Directed Editors For Graphical Languages, Farahangiz Arefi Jan 1988

Automatically Generating Syntax-Directed Editors For Graphical Languages, Farahangiz Arefi

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This research is concerned with the automatic generation of syntax-directed editors for graphical programming languages. A specification technique that is used to uniformly define graphical languages along with their syntax-directed editors is developed. The novel aspect of this specification technique, called a general graph transformation system, is that the graphical languages are described by specifying a family of editing operations. In this manner, a language is defined as a dynamic object which, by applying different editing operations, changes from one form to another, each form representing a sentence of the language. In order to demonstrate this process, the language of …

Employee Assistance Programs: The State Of The Art In Central Florida, W. Thomas Oldroyd Jan 1988

Employee Assistance Programs: The State Of The Art In Central Florida, W. Thomas Oldroyd

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

A considerable amount of literature has been written on Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs), yet the research to date has not proven the effectiveness of such programs. Due to the confidential nature of EAPs, research data are difficult to find. Many elements make up an EAP. The hypothesis tested during this research is that companies incorporating what are considered by many to be the essential elements of EAPs will have more positive opinions of those elements and will save more money when compared to companies that do not have an EAP. The data were collected over a four-week period from 52 …

Generating Multiple User Interfaces For Multiple Application Domains, Mahesh Hassomal Dodani Jan 1988

Generating Multiple User Interfaces For Multiple Application Domains, Mahesh Hassomal Dodani

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This Ph.D. dissertation presents a classification scheme for User Interface Development Environments (UIDEs) based on the multiplicity of user interfaces and application domains that can be supported. The SISD, SIMD and MISD [S= Single, I= user Interface(s), M= Multiple, D= application Domain(s)] generator classes encompass most of the UIDEs described in the literature. A major goal of this research is to allow any user to develop a personalized interface for any interactive application, that is, the development of an MIMD UIDE.

Fundamental to the development of such a UIDE is the complete separation of the user interface component from the …

On K - Y - Insensitive Donimation, Teresa Haynes Rice Jan 1988

On K - Y - Insensitive Donimation, Teresa Haynes Rice

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

A connected graph G is defined to be k-1-insensitive if the domination number 1(G) is unchanged when an arbitrary set of k edges is removed. The problem has been solved fork= 1. This Ph.D. dissertation focuses on finding extremal k-1-insensitive graphs on p nodes, fork~ 2. A graph is extremal if it has the minimum number of edges. Two subproblems are considered. The first, which has been solved completely, specifies that the same set of nodes dominates each graph obtained from G by removing k edges. The second requires only that the graph G be connected. This is a much …

A Relational Object-Oriented Management System And An Encapsulated Object-Oriented Programming System, Michael L. Nelson Jan 1988

A Relational Object-Oriented Management System And An Encapsulated Object-Oriented Programming System, Michael L. Nelson

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the Relational Object-Oriented Management System (ROOMS) is to show that the relational database scheme is a viable approach for storing objectoriented data. ROOMS is designed so that it can be implemented in any object-oriented language with appropriate I/O commands, or added to any objectoriented database management system that allows userdefined collections of data. Various problems were encountered in developing ROOMS. While these problems have been solved, the best solution is to use the Encapsulated Object-Oriented Programming System (EOOPS) . EOOPS is based upon an inheritance scheme which preserves encapsulation. This encapsulated approach avoids the problems associated with …

Boundary Layer On A Continuous Flat Plate In Parallel Flow With Similar And Non-Similar Boundary Conditions, Vaughn H.M. Faber Jan 1988

Boundary Layer On A Continuous Flat Plate In Parallel Flow With Similar And Non-Similar Boundary Conditions, Vaughn H.M. Faber

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is a computational analysis of the incompressible laminar boundary layer on a continuous moving surface. The skin friction and heat transfer variations on a moving plate with similar and non-similar (constant) mass transfer at the wall are obtained for 210 cases for the similar boundary solution and 60 cases for the non-similar solution.

Both cases were solved numerically using the fourth order Runge-Kutta algorithm. For the non-similarity case, the local non-similarity method as described by Sparrow, Quack and Boerner was used. The analysis shows that the shear stress for both the similar and non-similar cases is higher when …

Rise Time To Frequency Correlation Of Crosstalk In Coupled Microstrip Lines, Charles Michael Fletcher Jr. Jan 1988

Rise Time To Frequency Correlation Of Crosstalk In Coupled Microstrip Lines, Charles Michael Fletcher Jr.

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

An examination of forward crosstalk in microstrip transmission lines is presented through a computer simulation using SPICE. A non-resistive lumped L-C transmission line model is modified to include capacitive and inductive coupling from adjacent lines. Two adjacent microstrip transmission lines are modeled, and simulation results in both the time and frequency domains are shown. The time domain or transient analysis looks at the effect of rise times on crosstalk. Rise times in the range of 100 to 1000 nanoseconds (ns) are considered. The frequency analysis shows the crosstalk frequency response over the range of 100 to 1600 kilohertz (kHz). The …

A Cellular Algorithm For Data Reduction Of Polygon Based Images, Robert James Caesar Jan 1988

A Cellular Algorithm For Data Reduction Of Polygon Based Images, Robert James Caesar

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

ABSTRACT The amount of information contained in an image is often much more than is necessary. Computer generated images will always be constrained by the computer's resources or the time allowed for generation. To reduce the quantity of data in a picture while preserving its apparent quality can require complex filtering of the image data. This paper presents an algorithm for reducing data in polygon based images, using different filtering techniques that take advantage of a priori knowledge as to the images' content. One technique uses a novel implementation of vertex elimination. By passing the image through a sequence of …

Comparison Of Subsurface Cavity Investigations Using Earth Resistivity, Seismograph And Ground Penetrating Radar, Dennis M. Filler

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Sinkhole formation in the Central Florida area has become a serious problem. The subsurface exploration method for cavity detection is indeed needed prior to sinkhole development. this research study compares the effectiveness of earth resistivity, seismograph and ground penetrating radar (GPR) methods in the detection of subsurface cavities. A resistivity instrument measures a material's resistance to electric currents. The seismograph measure the propagation velocity of a medium refracting compressional waves. The GPR transmits and receives electromagnetic pulses reflecting off subsurface interfaces.

Tests were conducted at two sites: a model test site at the University of central Florida, Orlando, and a …

The Application Of Transfer Matrices In The Dynamic Analysis Of Planar Elastic Mechanisms, Richard Kent Lindenberg Jan 1988

The Application Of Transfer Matrices In The Dynamic Analysis Of Planar Elastic Mechanisms, Richard Kent Lindenberg

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Transfer matrices are used in the dynamic analysis of planar elastic mechanisms. Mechanism motion is discretized by dividing the motion into a finite number of intervals over which the mechanism is considered to be an instantaneous structure with constant geometry. Transfer matrix methods are then used to calculate the natural frequencies and corresponding mode shapes of the instantaneous structure. A transfer matrix relating the continuous, non-zero components of the state vector across a pin joint is developed. An elastic four bar mechanism and a crank slider mechanism with a rigid crank and elastic connecting rod are analyzed using lumped mass …

A System For Measuring The Phase Difference Between Two Points Of A Propagating Laser Beam, Jefferson E. Odhner Jan 1988

A System For Measuring The Phase Difference Between Two Points Of A Propagating Laser Beam, Jefferson E. Odhner

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

An optical system has been designed, analyzed, implemented, and calibrated which measures the phase difference between two points of a propagating laser beam. The system is a quadrature interferometer whose detector outputs are processed by a computer. This quadrature interferometer measures both the phase and amplitude variations between two points of a laser beam after the beam passes through turbulence . These measurements are in turn processed by a computer to isolate the phase variations from the amplitude variations. Further statistical analysis which can be performed on these phase variations should provide an understanding of the phase fluctuations of propagating …

Method For Sizing Mos Transistors For Vlsi, Matthew J. Amatangelo Jan 1988

Method For Sizing Mos Transistors For Vlsi, Matthew J. Amatangelo

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Determining the device width to length ratios has typically been an iterative process for the custom IC digital design engineer. After the logic design phase is complete for a particular circuit, the designer would make an educated guess at the device sizes. Then by trial and error, using SPICE or another circuit simulator, suitable sizes would be determined. Unfortunately, this approach is time consuming and the resulting sizes are often a good bit larger than they need to be to maintain a certain speed because of the lack of a rigorous sizing methodology. This paper describes a method for reducing …

A Proposed System For Determination Of Percent Cloud Cover, Carol L. Emrich Jan 1988

A Proposed System For Determination Of Percent Cloud Cover, Carol L. Emrich

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

A method for determining percent cloud cover by taking two consecutive images using different color contrast filters, specifically a red filter and a blue filter, is described. This method (RF/BF estimate) involves dividing the "red" image by the "blue" image, pixel by pixel, and determining the percentage of pixels in the resultant image with intensity values of one. This is the percent cloud cover. The RF/BF estimate is based on the different effects of molecule and particle scattering of electromagnetic waves in the visible portion of the spectrum. These two types of scattering, Rayleigh and Mie scattering respectively, are described …
