A Student Performance Evaluation Method For An Intelligent Simulation-Based Tutoring System, Camille Marie Dixon

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Intelligent simulation-based tutoring systems (ISTS) present intriguing and complex environments for the training of high performance skills. These skills involve the manipulation of objects within time and space constraints.

As with any tutoring system, there must exist a performance measurement methodology. Within an ISTS there is a module which functions as a tutor and a module which functions as a student modeler. These fundamental modules are required to make effective individualized tutoring decisions. However, each of these modules rely on information from a performance measurement system or evaluation system.

The objective of this research was to establish a performance evaluation …

Optimization Of Storm Sewer Construction Costs Using A Microcomputer Program, Dawn E. Fetter Jan 1988

Optimization Of Storm Sewer Construction Costs Using A Microcomputer Program, Dawn E. Fetter

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

When designing a storm sewer system there is a material and labor cost trade-off between changing pipe diameter for a specific flowrate while keeping physical pipe slope constant, and changing physical pipe slope for the same flowrate while keeping the pipe diameter constant.

To calculate costs associated with every possible combination of pipe diameters and excavation depth to find the optimum design for a storm sewer network without the use of a computer would be a very cumbersome task indeed. In fact, a minimum cost solution may never be found.

This paper presents a microcomputer program which assists the engineer …

The present research examined the etiology of bulimia nervosa from a psychodynamic perspective. The Eating Disorder Inventory (EDI) and Bern Sex Role Inventory (BSRI) were used to compare bulimics and controls on a number of personality dimensions including drive for thinness, body shape dissatisfaction, interoceptive awareness (one's lack of confidence in identifying emotions or visceral sensations) and sex role identification. Using the appropriate scales on the EDI, it was hypothesized that bulimics would demonstrate a higher drive for thinness and more body dissatisfaction than controls and that they would possess poorer interoceptive awareness than controls. In agreement with the dynamic …

A New Method For Broadband Surface Acoustic Wave Diffraction Analysis, Jacqueline Hanvey Hines Jan 1988

A New Method For Broadband Surface Acoustic Wave Diffraction Analysis, Jacqueline Hanvey Hines

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This thesis describes an innovative technique for determining the impulse response of a SAW device including the effects of diffraction on both isotropic and anisotropic substrates. The approach presented is unique in that it determines the point-to-point impulse response for the isotropic case using the two-dimensional wave equation, and utilizes a double integral reduction technique to determine the tap-to-tap response, thereby significantly reducing the complexity of the calculations involved. An extension is then made to describe the impulse response of two cascaded transducers of arbitrary geometry, along with some simplifying cases. Previous attempts to model diffraction effects generally utilized either …

Parallel Parsing In A Multiprocessor Environment, Dilip Sarkar Jan 1988

Parallel Parsing In A Multiprocessor Environment, Dilip Sarkar

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Parsing in a multiprocessor environment is considered. Two models for asynchronous bottom-up parallel parsing are presented. A method for estimating speedup in asynchronous bottom-up parallel parsing is developed, and it is used to estimate speedup obtainable by bottom-up parallel parsing of Pascal-like languages. It is found that bottom-up parallel parsing algorithms can attain a maximum speedup of 0 (L1/2) with (L1/2) processors, where L is the number of tokens in the string being parsed. Hence, bottom-up parallel parsing technique does not yield good speedup. A new parsing technique is proposed for parsing a class …

Sense Of Humor And Social Anxiety, James E. Fischer Jan 1988

Sense Of Humor And Social Anxiety, James E. Fischer

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

In utilizing humorous intervention within the psychotherapeutic milieu, researchers have indicated that there is a relationship between an individual's sense of humor and stressful emotions, specifically anxiety. However, the nature of this relationship is uncertain. While some scientists propose a direct relationship between humor and anxiety, others hypothesize an inverse relationship. This study was designed to investigate this relationship, hypothesizing that the greater an individual's sense of humor, the more likely the individual would experience anxiety in social situations. The subjects were 143 male and female undergraduates. These volunteers were administered the Situational Humor Response Questionnaire (SHRQ) and the Interaction …

Photoionization Of Gallium At 3d-4p And 4s-5p 4s-6p Resonances, C. Denise Caldwell, Manfred O. Krause, José Jiménez-Mier Jan 1988

Photoionization Of Gallium At 3d-4p And 4s-5p 4s-6p Resonances, C. Denise Caldwell, Manfred O. Krause, José Jiménez-Mier

Faculty Bibliography 1980s

The simplest atoms having nonspherical symmetry are those with a single p electron in a valence shell. Of these, the group IIIB elements are excellent examples. As such, they form test cases for photoionization from open-shell systems. Through photoelectron-spectroscopy techniques, we have examined both partial cross sections and angular-distribution parameters for autoionization corresponding to promotion of a 3d electron to the 4p shell of gallium. The resulting dp/sup 2/ configuration gives rise to a complicated multiplet structure across which the angular-distribution parameter varies considerably. We have also looked at the simpler structure resulting from promotion of one s electron to …
